To be shocked to see my (female) friend described as “they” on her work website?

I was looking at a friend’s company website and noticed she’s now listed as “they/them.” It really surprised me, I’ve only ever known her to use “she” and she’s never mentioned anything about changing pronouns.

Not sure if it’s a mistake, a work policy or a personal shift she hasn’t shared. AIBU to feel a bit blindsided? Or is it none of my business?

OP posts:

Why are you looking on your friends work website? Why do you care ?

What a weird way of gaslighting and blaming the OP for noticing something. It's her friend. Why wouldn't you take an interest in your friend and her work?
And she already answered that she was applying for a job with the company and looking and their site (probably for prep for the interview), way before you posted, if you had actually RTFT before posting.

If your friend is transitioning they deserve your support - not to be gossiped about on the Internet.
If its just a typo / mistake on the profile your friend will probably be "blindsided" if they find out you are second guessing their gender identity with a bunch of strangers on the Internet.
There's only one way to find out... Ask her!

'They/Them' is neutral, not 'transitioning', and no, they don't automatically deserve support because they want to pretend they're something other than they are.

Foundationns · 24/09/2025 08:35

OP why didn’t you ask your friend rather than posting here?

i am female but happy to use either she/her or they/them.

happy for they /them to be used as a gender neutral term: not sure why everything needs to be gendered (side eyes the entire French language)

Even the French have iel! (Pronounced ‘yell’)

What's the issue with sharing your pronouns? Or are you non binary?

Why is it necessary? Pronouns are sex-based. We can tell what sex a person is. Therefore we can tell what pronouns a person is.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 09:07

Anchorage56 · 23/09/2025 18:36

You don't have a preferred pronoun?

No one has a 'preferred' pronoun. Our 'pronouns' are decided at conception when the sperm enters the ova. Pronouns are sex-based. We don't have a choice in what our pronouns are.

Its a comments thread. I'm commenting. Maybe I don't believe her. And even if she was looking for a valid reason I think her reasons for coming on here to express her 'shock' was for rage baiting on a well know anti trans platform

Anti trans? 🙄No, PRO-WOMEN. But of course misogynists who are anti-women will claim feminism is anti-trans. What you really want to say is anti-men.

Are you she/her, he/him or they/them. I'm she/her. That's great thank you. Simple.

There is no such sex as 'they/them'. There is only male or female. Nothing else.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 09:24

Anchorage56 · 23/09/2025 20:28

That's fine, they can then put "they" if that is the firm policy. No points being made on either side in that meeting right 😆

There is no such sex therefore no such sex pronoun as 'they'.

Whats speaking English got to do with anything.

Ive actually been very surprised when watching documentaries following people who have had gender reassignment surgery etc just how much they can look like the sex they are 'changing into'. We have all seen the very obvious cases where all they do is put on lippy and pretend to be female to get out of being put in a male prison, but it's amazing when it's done correctly over a long period of time by genuine people. You wouldn't know.

Lol, you're trying convince yourself. We all know. Height. Voice. Gait. Lack of hips. Hand size and feet size. None of those change via surgery.

I'm personally talking about whether it's an issue or not. Not concentrating on the language aspect. Solely looking at the language aspect then that's a non issue because our language constantly changes over each generation. Many words are not used any more and many new ones exist.

Definition of male and female and therefore sexed pronouns never change.

No need for personal insults tut tut

And going on about "long waffling paragraphs" isn't a personal insult? She just responded to you in kind.

scorpiogirly · 24/09/2025 09:34

Nothing surprises me these days. More and more people are showing themselves as being bonkers.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 09:37

whimsicallyprickly · 24/09/2025 07:26

Well.....you say that you're "shocked"
There isn't much which shocks me. Gaza, Ukraine, poverty, homelessness......not someone's choice of pronouns ......but YOU are shocked

If this person is a close friend, why not ask them about it? They can then explain the situation to you

I'm wondering why you were looking so closely at their company's website

RTFT, she explained why long ago in the thread.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 09:39

Anchorage56 · 24/09/2025 07:28

My argument doesn't require me to waffle on about goodness knows what because my view is very easy to explain. I also think some people, not necessarily saying you, but some waffle on because they don't want to admit the real reason they disagree with pronoun use.

None of us have ever hid why we disagree with pronoun use. Ever.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 09:41

whimsicallyprickly · 24/09/2025 07:33

I see a few PPs are referring to 'sex'.

I'm assuming in this situation re they/them.....we're actually talking about gender?

chatgpt:

Sex refers to biological and physiological characteristics, such as chromosomes and reproductive organs, that distinguish individuals as male, female, or intersex.

Gender, on the other hand, is a social and psychological construct encompassing personal identity, roles, norms, and expectations associated with being a man, woman, or non-binary person.

Gender is not necessarily connected to a person's sex assigned at birth and exists on a spectrum, while sex is largely determined by biology.

Sex is real. Gender is not real and is made up by misogynistic men.

That's all there is to it. No one needs to desperately refer to AI to know that. We know it in primary school.

Definition of male and female and therefore sexed pronouns never change.

Pronouns are just words. I can call myself whatever I want at the end of the day. I'm female and use she but I could even make up my own unique pronoun if I wanted.

ThatBlackCat · 24/09/2025 09:34

No, someone could write a long waffling article that I don't like, it's not personal to the person that wrote it

You have obviously never seen any documentaries. These are people that have taken hormones over many years as well as having surgery. You really wouldn't know.

That's the whole point! It isn't. It's not a pronoun.

You realise videos can be edited? The amount of videos that have been caught out for being edited frame by frame and altering the look of the people in it is amazing. You are so naive. And hormones do one fifth of fuck all. They don't alter your bone structure. They don't shorten your limbs. They don't, most noticeably, alter your gait. They don't alter your hand size. They don't alter your shoe size. They don't alter your voice. They don't alter your height. They don't alter your larger heart and lung capacity. They may stop you growing facial hair, but that is all they do. They do fuck all in truth and reality.
