Tried three places for lunch today and none cater for women

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 22/09/2025 20:10

I went out for lunch today with a friend.
Well, at least we tried to have lunch.
All three places, two pubs and one cafe, were not suitable for women because you needed a penis to get into them or to use the toilet.
We ended up coming back to my home instead.

AIBU to think that everywhere should offer equal service to women?
Or is it my fault for not checking in advance that I could eat there without a penis?
Should I have researched on tripadvisor?
Am I too entitled expecting businesses to ensure non penis having people can pay to eat lunch at their establishment?

Day in the life of a disabled person.

Do you mean none of them had a disabled toilet?

moresoup · 22/09/2025 20:18

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 22/09/2025 20:14

I honestly thought it was clear enough but replace not catering for women with not catering for disabled people.
I substituted women to try and give some insight into the injustice to a wider audience.

Edited

That was really clumsily done, it wasn't clear at all

Anyway, as a wheelchair user to I do really sympathise but I also understand that in a country with a lot of old buildings we arent going to be able to access everywhere. It does frustrate me though when a simple little portable ramp is all it would have taken to make the place accessible

I'm more sad how hard it is to get anywhere nice in the countryside. Our local authority just proudly advertised a new "accessible" country park but all the paths are covered in gravel FFS

fluffiphlox · 22/09/2025 20:19

i don’t know why you have to be so cryptic.

LeedsZebra90 · 22/09/2025 20:19

I initially assumed you were using woman to indicate a different point... but then all the talk of penises confused me!

Sorry to hear that though, that's really shit.

TheChosenTwo · 22/09/2025 20:19

If you wanted to share your frustrations about being disabled or having a disabled member in your party?
I’m afraid the mention of penis multiple times has really taken away from your thread.
What did you want from the thread?
I’m really sorry you had a shit experience today but it was nothing to do with having or not having a penis, it was to do with disability and it’s important to raise awareness here. I feel like if you’d mate it clear from the start you’d have some good advice or at least fellow ranting joining in. Now there’s just a bunch of us feeling a bit confused 😵‍💫

whatasillygoose · 22/09/2025 20:16

No, it was a silly and confusing point.

I’m sorry you weren’t able to access venues but god, just post what you mean!

When people have posted in a straight forward manner about lack of accessibility there have been suggestions of calling ahead, maybe checking with disability organisations.
Well meant but why should we have to?
Imagine the outrage if women had to ask in advance if they could get into a pub or cafe?

Penis was just an illustration about needing a specific body part.
In my case today it was working legs.

Dramatic · 22/09/2025 20:21

Sorry op, that wasn't clear at all.

I do think places should do all they can to make it accessible, I'm surprised at the lack of disabled toilets, in my experience if a place only has one toilet it's usually a disabled one.

Were you somewhere that has particularly old buildings?

Childanddogmama · 22/09/2025 20:21

I have no idea why you write your post like that! Just say what you mean. This whole thread will be derailed now and people will vote you are unreasonable for writing in such a confusing way! Probably best to delete and write again in a more straightforward way.

Maybe because not every establishment can? If you don’t want your time wasted then check first. It’s hardly difficult.

Springadorable · 22/09/2025 20:22

You've ignored the questions about which places you tried. Were they old? If so, predictable. If more modern, then that's much more of a surprise.

Coffeeishot · 22/09/2025 20:23

TheProfoundlyPeculiarPointOfPete · 22/09/2025 20:13

Don't you keep a penis in your handbag for these occasions?

😂

Op do you want to explain what you are talking about?

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 22/09/2025 20:23

And no, none were listed buildings.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/09/2025 20:24

I often go out to eat with other women. I sometimes do it as a lone woman. We've, I've never had to go home because of a lack of penises/ penii(?)Confused

Being a woman is being half of the population. Being a woman is not a disability @Mrsmunchofmunchington.Hmm

I understand what you mean but unfortunately not everywhere is able to be made accessible, there are too many old buildings. As someone who is partially sighted I have had to accept that some places are just unsuitable or much harder to navigate for me, quite often to the point where I just don't go.

The problem is that there are valid exceptions to not providing access / having an accessible toilet, for example where the venue is in a listed building or one where it would be physically impossible to sufficiently alter the building.

You haven't mentioned if the venues you tried to access were possibly in the above categories. I'm sorry you were disappointed however.

Reanimated · 22/09/2025 20:24

People with allergies or coeliacs have to phone ahead and make sure that the food on the menu is safe and is prepared safely. It's not easy but it isn't on a par with penis exclusivity.

The quite obvious difference being that a woman and a man don’t have any actual different accessibility needs, whereas a disabled person does? The two things are not comparable.

Huge difference between “you can’t come in because I don’t like women” and “you physically are unable to enter because your wheelchair does not fit through the door”.

Thingyfanding · 22/09/2025 20:25

What is your disability?

Well maybe you dohave too check ahead to avoid trying 3 places and having to go home?

We live in a super old country where there are wonky buildings and steps and all kinds of barriers to entry. It’s shit I do understand but unfortunately calling ahead or checking online is the same for people with allergies, other disabilities and numerous other reasons.

Where are you what city or town? Maybe worth flagging with the local council see if you can make a change for the better, by highlighting the issues.

Campbellcarrotsoup · 22/09/2025 20:26

It was hardly the most confusing thread. Thexladt line made it clear.
Yes accessibility is still pretty crap even in supposedly modern buildings from the toilets, to the signage and the card machines and the unnecessary loud music in neighbourhood restaurants.

Then just say it's not wheelchair accessible, most people would know that is an injustice. Say what you mean exactly how you mean it and people will be less confused. If it wasn't for the above explanation that it was not infact your lack of penis that prevented you from eating at places then I would be very confused right now as I take things literally (I actually think you mean exactly what you said) and so will many others here.

Anyhow yanbu I believe all places should cater to all disabilities. They should have had wheelchair access. Sorry you wasn't able to find somewhere suitable OP that must have been incredibly frustrating.
