Sick of hearing about "bits"

HelloDenise · 20/09/2025 01:11

I'm fed up of reading about people going to B&M, Home Bargains, Next, M&S, the pound shop or wherever to get some autumn .... BITS!

Throws, pumpkins, candles, cushions, foliage, wreaths and garlands ARE NOT BLOODY BITS! They're whole, substantial items, not bits of items .

Where the hell did this come from? Or should I be on Pedants' corner?

OP posts:
suburburban · 20/09/2025 10:34

i sometimes pick up a few bits from the supermarket

I don’t buy stuff for Halloween though.

suburburban · 20/09/2025 10:34

Yes and I pop and nip as well

WestwardHo1 · 20/09/2025 10:34

YANBU

Cheap plastic polluting tat.

And yes "picky bits" makes me nauseous!

Bonden · 20/09/2025 10:35

Things. You’re buying the things. Not bits

I do not change my decor, bedding etc during the year. Only time I have seasonal stuff out is Christmas and that is a tree, a few wooden ornaments from Tiger.

Where do people put all this excess crap outside the seasons? If they bin it after a couple of months, then they have more money than sense.

Oh my Xmas tree and its decs are 15-16 years old.

I don’t either

Totally thought this thread was going to be about genitalia

Misses point of thread

Snap.

WestwardHo1 · 20/09/2025 10:37

I remember years ago a thread in AIBU entitled "AIBU to pop to Marksies for some picky bits?" I nearly vomited over the keybard. "Marksies" and "picky bits" Envy

Tbf I don't get the decorating for seasons that appears to be a thing. Do people throw everything away, which seems dreadfully wasteful or have they got more storage than I have.
By the time we've stored 2x sheets 2x duvet etc for 5 people that's our linen box full. If I had for everyone a Christmas set, a autumn set, a spring set, an Easter set, a summer set then that's another twenty-five duvet sets. And that's just one thing!

I have 2 sets of bedding for autumn, 2 for Christmas and 2 for the rest of the year. I use the same bottom sheets and mattress protectors regardless of which duvet covers. So I store 4 sets of duvet covers and pillowcases in the vacuum storage bags, which are flat and go on a shelf in the airing cupboard. We also have 2 sets of Christmas bedding for the other two beds in the house. They’re also stored flat in vacuum bags. The reason I have 2 of each is because I like to have one in the wash and one on so I don’t have to rush to wash.

My autumn decor consists of some cushion covers, two ceramic pumpkins, a door wreath, a faux ‘flower/twig’ arrangement from Little Buds and some faux leaves (which I got given after someone’s autumn wedding). I put those. in the bottom of a couple lanterns I have with candles in.

All of the above we’ve had for a number of years and will continue to use until they’re no longer usable. Like I said, I’m housebound a lot so these things just bring me a bit of joy.

I feel that way about clothes referred to as ‘pieces’, usually on social media.

"Look at this gorgeous piece I picked up from H&M, it will go so well with the piece I ordered from New Look.” 😑

TheignT · 20/09/2025 10:39

Honish · 20/09/2025 10:03

I think the Americans have it right when they talk about running errands and going to get groceries. Takes all manner of 'bits' out of the conversation.

My granny would have said messages. Going to go to shops to get messages. Ive never thought it was odd before but it suddenly seems wrong

People like this usually say "a trouser" or even "a jean" as well

here it is. Dear God.

It was during Covid so it's also filled with lots of Covid mentalness as well. THINK OF THE STAFF!

BCBird · 20/09/2025 10:43

Voted YABU as i cannot get worked up about such things. CBA😂

suburburban · 20/09/2025 10:43

I like the Dave Clark five hit, Bits and Pieces

40andlovelife · 20/09/2025 10:43

The worst is when people say they’re having picky bits for tea

Laserwho · 20/09/2025 10:45

It's probably a regional thing. I say bits when I'm getting a smaller shop. My grandparents said it and also my great grandparents according to my mum so it's at least a 150 year old expression. I'm in my 50s it's not new.

Custardandcreams · 20/09/2025 10:45

TammyJones · 20/09/2025 08:47

I don’t like bits and bobs - it’s bits and pieces!!!

😂 we call them odds and sods, funny how everyone has there own saying

Dandeliontea123 · 20/09/2025 10:46

At least ‘I did a thing’ (when ‘thing’ actually refers to a huge achievement) is dying out.

HelloDenise · 20/09/2025 01:28

I wonder if they'll start buying Christmas "bits" as well.

Yes I imagine so

Ha! Someone went there before me ....

Yes, that's immediately what sprung to mind for me. I thought I'd be opening quite a different tone of thread! 😂

LessOfThis · 20/09/2025 06:45

Yes there was a woman here who said something like “I went to M&S to get some bits my daughter needed” and it absolutely peaked me. Enough of bits!!

I saw (and viscerally reacted) to that one too!

SerafinasGoose · 20/09/2025 10:52

OwlBeThere · 20/09/2025 02:24

The phrase ‘picky bits’ makes me murderous. 😂

Sounds like a very unpleasant disease.

ShowOfHands · 20/09/2025 10:52

Bits is irritating anyway but the way it's airily used to refer to soul-destroying, planet-ruining and pointless tut from Shein, Temu and similar, is nauseating.

scalt · 20/09/2025 11:06

Some mixed netball teams go by the name "Bits and Tits". I kid you not.
