Sick of hearing about "bits"

HelloDenise · 20/09/2025 01:11

I'm fed up of reading about people going to B&M, Home Bargains, Next, M&S, the pound shop or wherever to get some autumn .... BITS!

Throws, pumpkins, candles, cushions, foliage, wreaths and garlands ARE NOT BLOODY BITS! They're whole, substantial items, not bits of items .

Where the hell did this come from? Or should I be on Pedants' corner?

Same people who refer to everyone as ‘hun.’

Does it get on your bits OP?

😂

Merseymum1980 · 21/09/2025 18:47

Hate this
Also hate the phrases a bit Spenny
Bouj or whatever
Basic bitch
Pilates princess
People that call you hun
People that speak over People when making a point
Too much lip and cheek filler ruining people's face

I feel that way about clothes referred to as ‘pieces’, usually on social media.

"Look at this gorgeous piece I picked up from H&M, it will go so well with the piece I ordered from New Look.” 😑

Yes! It’s used a lot on MN as well.

Nojudginghere · 21/09/2025 19:05

Lifeinthepit · 21/09/2025 17:16

It's not triggering exactly. It's a useful way to sort people into Bits People/ non Bits People and go from there. Eg it would be very hard for me personally to be able to have a friend that says she's just nipping to Marksies for some picky bits for tea. It just wouldn't happen. 100% guaranteed.

If you are happy to choose your friends based on whether they are “bits people” or “non bits people”, rather than whether they are kind, considerate, fun to be with, make you feel happy…then I can guarantee you that it would be hard for me to be your friend too.

I wonder if they'll start buying Christmas "bits" as well.

I have never agreed with a post so much. I hate it when people say ‘bits’ in this context.

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 21/09/2025 19:08

DiscoNights · 20/09/2025 01:35

Did you pop into Morrisons to get a picky tea?

I was just about to say don’t get me started about picky bits for a picky tea😬😬😬🤨

Kjpt140v · 21/09/2025 19:10

WTF are you pulling through you?

Thindog · 21/09/2025 19:10

"Picky" is a word that conjures up a child excavating the contents of their nose, or worrying at a scab, or excavating a verruca.
"Bits" is a pet name for genitalia.
So it's a no from me.

shuggles · 21/09/2025 19:15

@HelloDenise I hate when people say they want "bitta lettuce" or "bitta tomato" on their sandwich.

Just say you want lettuce and/or tomato on your sandwich. No need to prefix it with "bitta."

Me too ✋️

DetectiveDouche · 21/09/2025 19:31

I actually went to Poundland to get some Autumn bits. I took inspiration from my DIL who has a great talent for the placing of seasonal homely bits. Eventually, my Autumn bits will make way for my stored-away Christmas bits. ☺️

I think it comes from a shortened version of "bits and pieces" OP. Nothing to throw your bits out of the pram about 😉

MaidOfSteel · 21/09/2025 19:32

You don’t accessorise for the changing seasons, then?

Me either. It’s a load of consumerist bullshit purely for Instagram.

I do actually. That's not what I was posting about though.

I’m genuinely aghast at the amount of shitty landfil people are prepared to buy. Seasonal wreaths, themed decorations, printed crockery, themed bakeware … it’s endless.

CyanMaker · 21/09/2025 19:37

In the U.S. there's an equally irritating description for shopping purchases.People say "I scored this today". Or they'll talk about their
" haul".It sounds rather greedy to me.

You’ve been captured by advertising and influencers!

I didn't used to.. but I've started to because I find it quite pleasing to the eye. I don't put it on instagram tho 👀 .. it's not that pleasing to the eye! And is purely for us .. DH and I.. who no longer have young children at home to prioritise so can think about things like this if we want to. Hurrah for seasonal (not genital!) bits!

See. I knew you would come up with that sort of kind and heartfelt reply. The Friend Segregation System worked perfectly.

Use or non-use of the term "picky bits tea" is clearly the most important thing in a friendship. Being kind considerate or fun are very much secondary concerns.

abouttogetlynched · 21/09/2025 18:07

Same. I’m similarly sick of “popping” - just popping to the shop for some bits. Just pop a… well I can’t think of anything now, but pisses me off when I hear it nearly as much as when I see it written.

You’ll hate me then😂

noodlebugz · 21/09/2025 20:19

Personally I’d say bits is ok - from bits and bobs meaning little fripperies that you don’t really need but that you want.
I put them away at the end of the season, am slowly adding to my seasonal things but tend to reuse them.
I don’t think it means bits like crumbs - my eldest used to say bit bit all the time and point out some minuscule crumb or ant she’d seen. (And then try to eat it!) I cannot recommend trying to eat fake leaves or a candle - safety first people.

Mrsgreen100 · 21/09/2025 20:22

Bits , all the crap no one actually needs , and ultimately ends up in landfill what wasteful creatures we are as humans

pollymere · 21/09/2025 20:31

My Mum used to use the term "Bits and pieces" and people used to say "Bits and bobs". I guess it comes from that.

Bits imply a small shop to me to add to something else

e.g. I’ll pop into supermarket later to buy a few bits for the weekend so a top up shop?
