Sick of hearing about "bits"

HelloDenise · 20/09/2025 01:11

I'm fed up of reading about people going to B&M, Home Bargains, Next, M&S, the pound shop or wherever to get some autumn .... BITS!

Throws, pumpkins, candles, cushions, foliage, wreaths and garlands ARE NOT BLOODY BITS! They're whole, substantial items, not bits of items .

Where the hell did this come from? Or should I be on Pedants' corner?

If they called it tat, which is what it is, then at least they’d have to type one less letter 😂Depressingly for the planet it all ends up in landfill

CJsGoldfish · 20/09/2025 03:22

I'm in bits after reading this post. I forgot to pick up my autumn bits alltogether 😭

CurlewKate · 20/09/2025 04:49

I absolutely hate the word “bits” used like this. I also hate it (another thread probably!) used for little girl’s genitals.

NotOrange · 20/09/2025 04:52

LibertyLily · 20/09/2025 02:39

And me 🤬

Bloody M&S has declared itself "the home of picky bits" which is almost enough to put me off buying their - admittedly delicious - deli snacks...grrrr!

Edited

Agree wholeheartedly.

Also can we ban a few more words and phrases?
Lush, buzzing, unless referring to a bee or wasp, I’m sure there are more.

@OwlBeThere brilliant 😂

@HelloDenise totally agree about 'bits' - it is absolutely irritating as fuck.

But someitmes I find myself saying it to certain people - just to fit in.

I actually do need therapy 😆

Ponoka7 · 20/09/2025 05:20

Our big Home and bargains has a good cafe in it. I go with one of my friends and she always asks "what are you going for", the only suitable reply is "bits and bobs", because it can be like the middle of lidl, who knows what you will come out of there with?

I find this very irritating too. Bits just makes me think of genitals.

And i'm sick of them too.

cheesycheesy · 20/09/2025 05:28

“Picky tea” makes me want to puke. My fil says that and it gives me murderous rage every time

OhNoNotSusan · 20/09/2025 05:31

they should say paraphernalia

AnneOnAMoose · 20/09/2025 05:50

"Bits" I'm fine with.

It's "fed up of" that I'm fed up with...!

waltercrimble · 20/09/2025 06:06

HelloDenise · 20/09/2025 01:28

I wonder if they'll start buying Christmas "bits" as well.

I’ve already started.

Ticktockk · 20/09/2025 06:17

Laughing at the ‘similar posts’ below. They must be giving you conniptions.

The phrase ‘picky bits’ makes me murderous. 😂

I came on here to say this!

Owly11 · 20/09/2025 06:33

Isn’t it from bits and bobs?

muddyford · 20/09/2025 06:35

Zempy · 20/09/2025 06:32

I came on here to say this!

That phrase made it onto the News Quiz yesterday evening, which made me laugh!

stayathomer · 20/09/2025 06:36

I go to eg Tesco to get some bits and I mean just a few small items, bread, milk and cereal or Pennys to gets bits means a few pairs of socks, underwear or dome clothes for the kids. I think I call most things ‘bits’!!

daisychain01 · 20/09/2025 06:39

Picky bits.

😆😆

LessOfThis · 20/09/2025 06:45

Yes there was a woman here who said something like “I went to M&S to get some bits my daughter needed” and it absolutely peaked me. Enough of bits!!

Notthatgameagain · 20/09/2025 06:58

I don't use it but I think it's perfectly ok for others to. It makes sense if you are going to the shop for just a few random things etc.

MyDeftDuck · 20/09/2025 07:00

The only place I go for “autumn bits” is the storage chest upstairs ……..might crochet another pumpkin but otherwise I simply recycle all the “bits” from previous years

Onelifeonly · 20/09/2025 07:05

Grrrr, I hate that word used as referring to items one might buy or choose. Bits are parts of a whole item. Though 'pieces' sounds better.

Anyway I don't like 'bits'. Ideally my home would be minimalist, with only truly valuable things in it. Hasn't happened yet but I'm more into getting rid of or re-using than buying more. (My family aren't though......)

ChanelBoucle · 20/09/2025 07:06

Once when I was on an induction for a new job, my new boss asked me if I could photocopy my ‘bits’ before I left. I was left bewildered until I realised he meant my exam certificates etc 😆. I couldn’t help but snigger to myself at the thought of unwittingly handing him a life sized image of my undercarriage as an impressive start to my new position.

Anyway, back to the thread, I get you op, but I’m more angry at the over-consumption of rushing out to buy said ‘bits’ every time there’s a seasonal event. Terrible for the environment.
