Video of a kind man supporting his Muslim neighbour. AIBU to be horrified that this is where we’re at right now?

I guess it may be fake, but there’s no reason to think it would be.
So many threads on here about the flags and the March etc. Lots of posters saying it’s ridiculous that these things are seen as far right, racist or racist.
The exchange in this clip could have been straight out of Germany in the 1930s.

How the hell did it come to this?

Because human nature never fundamentally changes

weighinin · 16/09/2025 15:16

People are literally smearing shit on synagogues in the UK, hounding and isolating Jewish students in British universities, abusing Jewish school children and Jewish people are increasingly hiding any sign of being Jewish in public, people in the UK have openly supported the racist murders against Jew of October 7th, and tore down posters of the hostages. Jewish people have been struck by, at best, the remarkable absence of support from their fellow British citizens in the face of all this hostility and hatred. As one Jewish man put it, ' I used to think I was a British Jew. Now I realise I am just a Jew who happens to live in Britain.'

I think all this is more reminiscent of 1930s Germany.

AgDulAmach · 16/09/2025 15:17

It came to this for a few reasons:

A belief came from somewhere that every generation should be 'better off than the last.' It makes no sense but many people are fixated on it and feel very hard done by when they perceive that they don't have it as easy as their parents. Rather than just acting like grownups and accepting that there are natural peaks and troughs in any country's fortunes, they feel their entitlement is being taken from them and they need someone to blame. Foreign people are an easy target for the hard of thinking.

You add in covid, where the rug was pulled from under literally everyone in the world pretty much and you get a sense of hoplessness that stokes the pettiness and angry entitlement.

Actually, every generation SHOULD be better off than the last. Otherwise we have failed as a society.

And accepting like grown ups, doesn't pay the bills.

GreenGreenGreenRed · 16/09/2025 15:22

It's a great video, but it's fake.

In an ideal world each generation should be better off. But we're humans who make human decisions, who are also subject to things like natural disasters and pandemics, so in the real world you have to accept that it doesn't always happen.

Wanting it is one thing, expecting it or feeling entitled to it is another thing entirely.

Trallala · 16/09/2025 15:25

I see the comments appear to have been turned off on Facebook. I've seen this posted several times across social media today, with many people pointing out it's highly likely staged, and that the 'nice old chap' is seemingly frequently in skits on Tiktok (as the kids call them) portraying people complaining about others' parking.

No idea who made this, or the thinking behind it. It could be a good-natured attempt to model neighbourly and inclusive community spirit, or it could be a plant by right-leaning factions who will later 'expose' it to be fake and then accuse the left of fabricating their good intentions. The whole thing is now very weird, very meta, and very confusing.

I suspect most people demonstrate their respect for their neighbours by acting decently, rather than performative visits.

It's happening because Elon Musk, Putin and other total bastards are flooding social media with inflammatory posts designed to cause anger and outrage. Putin wants to destabilise western democracies like the UK and I don't know what drives Musk. I can only guess he is just a racist and a facist and he likes to see violence and fear.
Everyone needs to get off social media and into real life like the kind man in the link, which may be fictional, but was well meant.

Why is it that the first time someone starts a thread in support of Muslims in ages that it gets immediately hijacked by posts about anti-Semitism?

Would you be happy it if people started talking about Islamophobia in an anti-Semitism thread?

And here we go. In this post, British Jews, just as German Jews were in Nazi Germany, are identified as outsiders whose interests are not in their own nation that they are citizens of, but who are aligned to 'malevolent' outside interests.

Thank you for proving my point that we are seeing a resurgence of people like you, who are demonstrating thinking extremely reminiscent of that of the anti-Semites in 1930's Germany. You need to take a good hard look at yourself and how you are thinking.

Just to add, this poster is also rather explicitly stating that the harassment British Jews is justified due to the actions of a foreign nation. Pure anti-Semitism.

AgDulAmach · 16/09/2025 15:36

No one should be smearing anything on any religious building, regardless of what any country is doing. It's stupid behaviour designed to scare and intimidate fellow humans. Anyone who looks back on their life and feels proud of doing something like that has been a total waste of skin.

No British person (or person living in Britain regardless of their nationality) should be living in fear or victimised because of what another country is doing. Brirish Jews are not responsible for the actions of the Israeli government, and should not be treated as if they are. British Muslims are not responsible for the actions of Hamas, the Taliban, or any other group to which they are not affiliated and should also not be treated as if they are.

Judge individuals by their actions and words, by all means. In the 1930's not all Germans were carrying out a genocide either.

Because the OP explicitly stated its reminiscent of 1930s Germany, which is a clear reference to the lead up to the Holocaust against Jewish people.

Its highly relevant to talk about what is happening to British Jews in this context.

Very telling that you regard that as 'hijacking' rather than extremely pertinent given the framing and parallel used in the OP.

I didn't mention Jews. I referenced Israel. I hope you are as disgusted at the actions of the Israeli authorities as the majority of people seem to be.

Your comments are completely the product of your own – what? Insecurities? Fears? Feeling of displacement? I don't know, maybe you can expand on why everything references back to your faith.

I don't think you should. The sentiment is appropriate, and if there is no evidence of basic decent human beings in the country and it has to be faked, then every sngle one of us should be ashamed.

You didn’t utter a single word of support for that Muslim neighbour. Not a single one.

Now that is telling. You’re not interested in the experiences of Muslims. Yet you hijacked the thread straightaway.
