To ask what’s made you think “I’m getting old” recently?

I’ve noticed I’ve got a favourite seat in the living room and it’s accumulated a few of my things on and around it like my handbag, sweets, book, medication (because it’s the only thing that helps me remember to take it) a couple of letters that I opened and haven’t put away yet and a pack of baby wipes.
Dh is watching the game just now and I’ve sat down in my spot and accidentally knocked my medication off the armrest. I turned to dh and said “ do you know what would be handy, a little table next to me so I can put all my bits and bobs on” 🤦🏻‍♀️ my life flashed before my eyes before the words finished leaving my mouth. I’m 41 by the way how has nobody told me about this monumental moment.

Clumsiness I go to pick up a small item like an ear buds, bottle tops, etc and drop them. That's recent. I wonder if it's a spatial thing or arthritis/carpal tunnel.

SybTheGeek · 15/09/2025 20:49

Tbh I've been feeling a bit smug about the 'small table with items on' thing because I don't do that. Then I remembered that I recently bought 2 butler tray tables just to put bits and bobs on.

Charleychops · 15/09/2025 20:51

When it started to rain I thought "oh that'll do the plants a lot of good".

I certainly didn't see myself as "getting old" at 41!!

I am 75 and I still dance like to dance and sing to modern music. I go to bed at 12 and I enjoy going out - even in the evening.

What makes me feel old is seeing actors and pop stars who are now elderly. Paul Nicholas was being interviewed this morning for his part as Major in Fawlty Towers, which is currently on tour. I remember him as the handsome Vince in the sitcom Just Good Friends. I wouldn't have recognised him - but he still has the same twinkly eyes and laugh.

When I had my cataracts done, I got the shock of my life. Before, I had seen a slightly blurred image of myself in the mirror - when I saw all the wrinkles in fine detail I was appalled. Still haven't got over it.

Chemo, menopause and being 54! Bloody hell! 🙈

Gloriousgoard · 15/09/2025 20:57

Having tennis elbow and not even being able to lift a cup of tea!

Bernardo1 · 15/09/2025 20:59

Well firstly, not being up, for horizontal jogging every morning

Then, being told by medical persons, "yes that's fine, at your age"

pineapplesundae · 15/09/2025 21:03

Geeze I thought you were 65 plus! Don’t give in to it! Get up and get active! Exercise regularly and eat healthy foods.

That really shocked me especially my decolletage 😭

@MuddlingThroughLife , if you’re still reading, where did you get that table from?

It was from Amazon. Best buy ever 😊

Mine was realising I have to now take my glasses off to be able to read things close up. I didn't realise that not being able to focus close up happens to pretty much every one with age, I'm scared I might have to get varifocals! I'm 43!

I got varifocals a couple of years ago, I still take them off for up close stuff, nearly had to get on the floor to clock a price on a nice bench in Homesense yesterday!

Waking up at 3am and being wide awake has been a feature of sleep for years (I’m 50s) but I blame a hospital stay over a decade ago, it was very disruptive.

There has been a little table with a drawer between me and my DH’s chair in the living room for 20 years. The drawer contains glasses wipes, hand cream, other handy stuff. Must have a clearout! I never use a handbag, tho, hands always full of leadropes/leads.

This!! And the stiffness in the morning. But also my lack of tolerance for bullsh*t and my new ability to say no, mean it and stick to it!!

Yeah I do that too 😎

greengagesummers · 15/09/2025 22:05

What’s made me feel old today is hearing 12 y o DD playing Kelis’ “Milkshake”, and realising that I still mentally class it as “that rubbish new music” except it’s now 22 years later…

I’m a secondary school teacher, so it’s having students who have been alive for less time than I’ve been teaching for.

University lecturer - lots of students born in 2007 started today. This year I'll be interviewing people born in 2008. I still wear a coat I bought in 2008.

ToadRage · 15/09/2025 22:29

I once spoke to a youngster (yes, 20-somethings are now youngsters) about whether or not oversize tshirts are making a come back 'please mate, i remember then the first time around' my proof is tshirt from 1997 I can still wear.

FirstCuppa · 15/09/2025 23:10

All of those with facial hairs you are scared of missing - get dermaplaning! I was nervous when I first tried and sometimes go over an area too much which can make it a bit red, but really I do it once a week and relax in the knowledge no strays I can't see properly can ever fully prosper.

At least they get there in the end! I'm not sure mine really do 😬

Rexthesnail · 15/09/2025 23:26

I really look forward to getting home, and having a cup of tea, taking my bra off, putting comfy clothes on and not have to leave my house again

to find tweezers for 3 erratic chin hairs

Asking my GP how old his little boy was. I said I thought he must be three now, and he said that he was coming up to three, and that his eldest was eight. I said, " I didn't know you had an older child as you look to young!". As soon as you tell police officers and doctors that they look too young, you know you are officially old!
