My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

It’s not. It’s used on promo material like SYL did to signal to his ‘tribe’. I’ve seen it as a tattoo. Badges. Etc etc.

Maybe you need to be careful of the company you keep then if you're in contact with people who wear badges with 88 and tattoos of 88.

PandoraSocks · 13/09/2025 16:19

Here's an article about 88, for those who seem doubtful about its existence and meaning. Often used along with 14.

I didn’t say I saw it among the company I keep. Why be so shallow in your response? I’ve seen it in documentaries etc because I like to be informed.

So. Imagine you are living in the 1930s. Hitler is hanging swastika flags everywhere, the Hitler Youth are going on wholesome hikes and singing songs, then he starts making Jews wear stars so they can be singled out, he takes away their businesses and homes (he has reasons for doing this ), he starts 'deporting' them and then he puts them into cattle trucks and takes them to be killed in gas Chambers. At which point on this journey do you stop thinking he's entitled to his opinions and decide for yourself what is right and what is wrong. At some point you have to make a stand.

You are comparing the swastika to the union jack?

PollieDarton · 13/09/2025 16:10

Well let’s hope nobody gets the 666 home today. We all know where they are going to end up! 😂

😂😂

cumbriaisbest · 13/09/2025 16:20

I literally feel sick to my stomach about this march.

Sorry for your problem OP.

shuggles · 13/09/2025 16:20

cardibach · 13/09/2025 16:15

And we all want to stop that. But demonising them all as rapists and child abusers and intimidating them isn’t the way to stop it.

They're not all sex offenders, though one of the issues is that some of them are from cultures in which certain behaviours that are acceptable there, that are not acceptable here. I saw one incident recently in which one man had started groping a woman in public, and it became evident that this was something he thought was normal. I'm not sure why we are now deciding as a society that this is somehow acceptable.

Something else I don't understand is that the majority of people in these boats are men aged between 18 - 34, and that we seem to be directing most of our attention and focus towards helping men. Why? Given that women are the main victims of conflict and war, why are our humanitarian efforts disproportionately directed towards helping men and not women?

Nestingbirds · 13/09/2025 16:22

cardibach · 13/09/2025 16:18

Have you read the OP? She’s neither being dogmatic nor overbearing.

I completely disagree. Anyone that gets as upset as op was in her opening post is not being remotely respectful of her son’s autonomy.

She is ‘so upset’ and he is ‘so far away’ from her values she is behaving in a very controlling fashion.

Clarabell77 · 13/09/2025 16:23

DBSFstupid · 13/09/2025 16:13

here's some sense for you OP... ..what an utterly ridiculous post.
You are "shaking"?
🙄

Have you seen the state of the thugs and morons on the march? Most people would be a little bit anxious about their son associating with a mob like that.

NorfolkandBad · 13/09/2025 16:24

Goldenbear · 13/09/2025 15:36

'People getting shot' is pretty unlike in the UK.

True - they get knifed here.

cardibach · 13/09/2025 16:16

So what does it actually do then? I mean in today’s context what is this hidden reference actually going to accomplish? Were all the nazis going to sit a home watching the tennis until they saw this picture of an 88 but calling them to arms? I bet somewhere there’s a TFL advert in the archives using the exact same bus route in publications. Wonder why nobody is accusing the Mayor of London of using hidden Nazi codes..

FenellaFeldman · 13/09/2025 16:24

@shuggles your 2nd paragraph is something I've always wondered. When I think about women in Afghanistan in particular, I wish we could give them all sanctuary. It's horrific.

CantCallItLove · 13/09/2025 16:24

Met police have reported the 'unite the kingdom' crowd are assaulting police officers now.

My son has gone on the march

Then they should be careful of the company they keep. They are boosting far right views by attending.

Jakers you can't parent adults as to the company they keep. How pompous.

2dogsandabudgie · 13/09/2025 16:25

cardibach · 13/09/2025 16:05

Concerned citizens don’t feel the need to wave flags about. They don’t categorise all immigrants as ‘after our women and children’. They don’t conflate immigration, illegal I migration and asylum seeking to try to scaremonger their point across. They don’t throw stuff at hotels holding traumatised people. They don’t post things like a PP has given as an example.
Just off the top of my head.

Are you saying that everyone at the protests will have been throwing stuff at hotels? That's rather a stretch. I expect the majority are there are fed up of the Government not listening.

Livelovebehappy · 13/09/2025 16:26

MousseMousse · 13/09/2025 16:08

What excuse is there for all the white rapists & misogynists then? You are still statistically far more likely to be assaulted by a white man than a man of colour - as current crime stats show.

Well of course that's going to be the case statistically. Because only 3% of the population are poc.

PollieDarton · 13/09/2025 16:10

Don’t be silly.

People aren’t making the 88 thing up. This is exactly the sort of nonsense these morons lap up. They’re out painting roundabouts and calling themselves patriots ffs. 😂

It seems some people think neo-Nazi symbolism and codes are funny. Probably best not to waste time on them, Cardi.

This country isn’t great about women either. 2 are killed each week by their partners.

FACTS (from ONS)

There were 108 domestic homicides in YE March 2024, a similar number to the previous year (107) and of these, 83 were women and 25 were men; 66 of these victims were killed by a partner or ex-partner.

So closer to about 1 per week, of both women and men, in roughly a 4:1 ratio, which is less than 1 per week.

Can we please use truth and facts here, not hyperbole and imagined figures.

Livelovebehappy · 13/09/2025 16:26

Yet we’re being overrun by them and need to take “are” country back… 🤔

“Something else I don't understand is that the majority of people in these boats are men aged between 18 - 34, and that we seem to be directing most of our attention and focus towards helping men. Why?”

The people the small boats are self selecting and tend to be men because they are often the ones who are the targets for persecution in their home country. Men are possibly more willing to take the risk of the hazardous journey ahead of their families. They may be reunited later.

Yep. On both sides. Let's make it clear that both sets are behaving like morons...who'd have thought.....

BruisedNeckMeat · 13/09/2025 11:17

You have your political opinions and he has his. I hope sincerely the march today is peaceful.

There are reports estimating that a million people could turn up today (no idea if this will be the case) in London. If this is somewhat true I cannot believe they are all Far Right nazis.

We must stop labelling all people who have concerns about immigration as Far Right - particularly after events in the USA this week.

We don't call people with "concerns over immigration" far right.

We call preople who want to deport legal citizens of the UK just because their family origins are in the sub continent "far right" Thats now the stated position of a British MP.

We call people who say Black women are intellectually inferior ( as Charlie Kirk) did "far right".

If you agree with either of those positions then you're far right too.

I agree with you, Pandora and Cardi.
I have read about Column 88 and have been aware of that, and other symbols for some time.
