My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

Are you also looking forward to the end of the nhs and the choice of private healthcare or no healthcare?

Let's be honest, the NHS is dire. Whatever we bring in to replace it has got to be better than.what we have now. I had to visit A&E last week with Don who was having asthma episode. Middle of the night, mid week. Standing room only. I was there 6 hours. And I was told that was pretty decent as generally 8 hours. Rang the GP. Number 36 in the queue at 9am in a morning. Trying to get nhs dentist for my aunt. Waiting list of 3 years. It can't continue as it is as its really not fit for purpose. I'd welcome a review.

I think it says a lot that the OP's thoughtful, balanced measured explanation of her feelings is being dismissed by certain posters who appear determined to either mock her reasonably expressed emotions of disappointment as somehow overwrought and hysterical or to spectacularly misread her as denying her son the right to his own opinions.

Utterly bizarre. The OP has stated honestly that she feels sad. She has expressed a desire to respect her son's thoughts and feelings. She has interrogated her own emotions and reactions to his attendance. She has behaved, at every step, perfectly.

The personal reaction of some suggests that they, too, are struggling to contain their emotions. And less successfully than the OP.

Maybe her son has also expressed his feelings in a balanced and thoughtful way. The OP by starting this post has suggested she struggles to understand her son and that his political views are just as valid as hers

No, it’s far right. SYL launched it via a picture including a code for Heil Hitler. It’s posted upthread.

I highly doubt all the people there are supporters of the far right though.

Edited to add that I had no idea what the number 88 was in reference to and I expect that's the same for a lot of people.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 13/09/2025 15:52

Define far right? Because is it just “far right” or is it a gathering of people who are not far left expressing. Concern over the impact if out of control immigration

Maybe read the thread where people have already explained why they view this March as far right. Again, how do you feel about the use of code for Heil Hitler in the promotional material? Do you consider that ‘far right’? Or just part of concern for immigration? Net immigration has fallen by a half this year, incidentally, so I don't think we can say it’s ‘out of control’ just at the moment.

Then they should be careful of the company they keep. They are boosting far right views by attending.

I think it’s been long established that 88 is such a code by the far right.

Unfortunately it seems there is violence and rucking with the police now. Let’s hope this is contained (my family member is on duty this afternoon)

Is that from the Robinson supporters or the counter demonstrators?

Hope your family member doesn't get hurt.

"Whatever their background". Yeah right 😂

If that's the rhetoric you want to promote then you are most definitely part of the 'perceived' problem.

Maybe give Shady Shae a follow on YouTube? You might actually learn something...

PollieDarton · 13/09/2025 15:45

Is there? Is it far right? Or is that just what the media are telling everyone to think?

Edited

It's organised and led by Tommy Robinson and his thugs so, yes, it is

If so it's lost on me 🤔

I'm just not buying the 'concerned citizens' rhetoric.

Some of us are old enough to remember the National Front marches of the 80's and honestly, there is no difference.

Let's just say that crowd, like all of the recent marches, will be dominated by angry white men who'd come second in my choice to spend time with over an angry bear in a wood every single time.

This is not how you get political reform.

This is how you intimidate 'foreigners'.

No, ‘whatever’ is brought in doesn’t have to be better. You could have all that plus be bankrupt at the end of it. Or denied treatment.

PollieDarton · 13/09/2025 15:53

I’ll be honest, as soon as the media start throwing the far right label about I usually lose interest. Bit like when the people of Epping who were genuinely concerned because they learned an immigrant had been sexually assaulting local children were all branded far right.

The man who assaulted a girl was arrested and taken to court in accordance with the law. It was racist to assume all the other asylum seekers were rapists and threaten to burn the hotel down.

It’s been explained. And no, it’s not like fiction. It’s an actual, well known way of Nazis recognising each other. I knew about it before this.

Yes my husband just gone off on duty, there’s gatherings in our town so hope all police are safe. Apparently the violence and missile throwing is coming from both marches - The “anti facist” one snd the “unite Britain” one

Exactly. Hopefully may now squash the myth that all protests on the left are peaceful. Both as bad as each other it seems.....

Plenty of stories & anecdotes of people in the States having all the same complaints about their healthcare as we do here...from waiting times, administration, bureaucracy to poor care.

Yes it's the police I feel sorry for when there are protests.

Yes sadly but predictably it’s starting to kick off by the sounds of things, missiles being thrown towards police from the Robinson mob. I expect things will get worse as the various football matches finish soon and all those thugs are added to the mix.

It’s hard to follow on YT now as all the independent live streamers have been taken down but you could see an hour or so ago on them that the atmosphere was turning ugly and getting very overcrowded.

The 88 bus.

I can’t find where that code is used in today’s march? What was the actual context?
