My son has gone on the march

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

No, ‘whatever’ is brought in doesn’t have to be better. You could have all that plus be bankrupt at the end of it. Or denied treatment.

Some of us have lived in other countries under their healthcare systems, and KNOW that the NHS is dire.

But we've all be told that it's our current expensive and not very good system, or a US system.

There are many different ones, but politicians don't dare suggest changes to "Our NHS".

I would welcome a party that is prepared to do that. We have some of the worst health outcomes in the western world.

Livelovebehappy · 13/09/2025 15:57

Exactly. Hopefully may now squash the myth that all protests on the left are peaceful. Both as bad as each other it seems.....

I wasn’t aware there was a myth to this effect.

I can’t find where that code is used in today’s march? What was the actual context?

There are something like 675 bus routes in London, in case you think this was a co-incidence.

The reason '88' is a far right code is because its used as such to covertly indicate allegiances. Its because H is the eighth letter of the alphabet, 88 = HH = Heil Hitler

I'm just not buying the 'concerned citizens' rhetoric.

Some of us are old enough to remember the National Front marches of the 80's and honestly, there is no difference.

Let's just say that crowd, like all of the recent marches, will be dominated by angry white men who'd come second in my choice to spend time with over an angry bear in a wood every single time.

This is not how you get political reform.

This is how you intimidate 'foreigners'.

I'm just not buying the 'concerned citizens' rhetoric.

OK so, genuine question, how does one tell the difference between a 'concerned citizen' and a 'member of the far right'. Because they ARE different things.
What characteristics do those groups not share?

Interesting. When the last Labour government left power, the NHS was viewed as very efficient indeed.

Maybe her son has also expressed his feelings in a balanced and thoughtful way. The OP by starting this post has suggested she struggles to understand her son and that his political views are just as valid as hers

Yes, but she also expressed a desire to understand and absolutely no desire to force him to adopt her views? A hope that she might be able to change his mind perhaps, but a total understanding that he has the right to hold them.

Yes my husband just gone off on duty, there’s gatherings in our town so hope all police are safe. Apparently the violence and missile throwing is coming from both marches - The “anti facist” one snd the “unite Britain” one

I always wonder why protest and counter protest groups aren't kept well away from each other. Surely they should not even come into contact with each other or even be allowed where they can see each other.

Or they could have completely different days so they remain peaceful or maybe I'm being naive.

The man who assaulted a girl was arrested and taken to court in accordance with the law. It was racist to assume all the other asylum seekers were rapists and threaten to burn the hotel down.

Not sure. Because the reality is that the country the man originates from disrespects women. So it makes sense that men coming here from that country have the same views as it's their 'norm'. So it's not racist, but more likely factual that men from that country are going to treat women badly. It's ingrained into them.

DBSFstupid · 13/09/2025 16:04

SquirrelosaurusSoShiny · 13/09/2025 11:30

This. There is nuance in this whole discussion. The left made a huge mistake in trying to shut down open discussion on this topic and several others. 'Racists! Transphobes!' And now they're finally seeing - too late - that those tactics only work for so long. Those tactics make otherwise normal, moderate people feel lied to and overlooked and in the end, furious. So they have a chance now to pivot and say 'We got this wrong and we're sorry. We shut down discussion of genuine and legitimate concerns. Tell us what you're afraid of. We will listen to you and we will try to address your concerns with sincerity.'

I really hope they do because if they don't, we're fucked.

Oh I see, because an 88 bus just happened to go past that’s a hidden nazi code? Come on seriously? That’s a real stretch. 🙄

Concerned citizens don’t feel the need to wave flags about. They don’t categorise all immigrants as ‘after our women and children’. They don’t conflate immigration, illegal I migration and asylum seeking to try to scaremonger their point across. They don’t throw stuff at hotels holding traumatised people. They don’t post things like a PP has given as an example.
Just off the top of my head.

... has beliefs that you may believe to be morally or ethically wrong. Which goes way beyond 'a difference of opinion'

Morals and ethics are entirely a matter of opinion. They are subjective and vary over time and around the world, and even by situation.

I don't know why people ascribe moral virtue to their opinions and then hold them to be absolute truths that others should adhere to.

I don't kill things except by accident, from humans to animals. You probably kill wasps and eat meat.

Should you live by my ethics?
If you were my sister or daughter should I be appalled at your behaviour and call you out on MN or just be sad yet realise you have made your own choices on that subject?

There are degrees of difference of opinion.
I assume from your post that you are probably vegan. As am I. Which means that the two of us share an ethical position that harming animals is morally wrong. That is a base line, from which I doubt either us us will be swayed, because its out belief. So it wouldn't matter how hard people tried to persuade us to eat a steak, we wouldn't. Because to us it's wrong.
That doesn't mean we judge or condemn non vegan people. I don't, and I assume you don't either, but we hold fast to our rightness nonetheless, or why not eat the steak?
As to whose ethics we should live by, that's the big question, isn't it? In most cases where we percieve the harm level to be tolerable, we would say each to their own. But sometimes, when we consider the issue serious enough and the harm great enough most people would surely answer 'mine' otherwise it wouldn't be our ethical stance.

This country isn’t great about women either. 2 are killed each week by their partners.

What excuse is there for all the white rapists & misogynists then? You are still statistically far more likely to be assaulted by a white man than a man of colour - as current crime stats show.

You can't compare our NHS today to 15 years ago. Our country has changed so much since then. Population has increased plus Covid, plus people living longer, more treatments available etc.

I don't believe all Muslims disrespect women. I have been to Muslim countries (was born in one to British parents) and know Muslim men. It is racist to condemn all members of a race or ethnicity because of the actions of a few.

I know a Muslim man from Turkey who came here for the benefit of his daughter's education although it meant a lot of sacrifice.
