Turn your son in knowing it’s the death penalty?

TaupeLemur · 12/09/2025 15:28

Kirk’s killer has apparently been turned in by his family - or persuaded to hand himself in.
Trump &’his supporters have been very vocal about getting the death penalty for the shooter.

would YOU hand your child over, knowing that the electric chair would be the likely outcome?

YANBU - I wouldn’t turn him in to die.

YABU - I would he’s a killer and deserves all he gets

Honestly id have turned him in if it was a sexually motivated murder or sex crime regardless of penalty

For this situation id buy him a plane ticket somewhere with no extradition treaty

So you have no principles. Murder and evading justice is fine when it’s someone you dislike.

Your own son? who you gave birth too?

You'd send him screaming and shitting himself, literally, to a firing squad?

Fuck no

But this person was happy to take someone else's life .
Has to be consequences .
Why should he take a life and then carry on with his own?
Prisons are mainly too soft anyway .

Onthebusses · 12/09/2025 18:04

I am sceptical about the whole thing. Some kid? Made that shot? More likely a false flag to amplify the right wing voice. He'll probably turn up to court looking like he's on all sorts of meds, cause he will be. Patsy.

I don't think I could, but something has clearly gone very wrong that they raised an assassin.

I believe in bad eggs and mental illness.

Ah! So it appears that your AIBU was not done in good faith and was just a way of fitting in a rant against Charlie Kirk and to repeat lies and out of context sound bites to justify your de-humanising of a daddy, husband and friend who witness him being violently murdered in front of them.

In his words "When you stop having a human connection with someone you disagree with, it becomes a lot easier to want to commit violence against that group person"

Innocent until proven guilty: I am not sure if this applies in US law. IF this young man is guilty, then he must face the consequences of his actions. I hope that will not be execution.

Innocent until proven guilty: I am not sure if this applies in US law.

I am not a lawyer and know little about the US legal system, but I believe it's based on the English legal system so yes, it's innocent until proven guilty.

Possibly, why do you ask?

@SnipSnipMrBurgess

cos you’re talking absolute shite. People on crack often do.

Also vaguely amusing that you feel sex crimes are beyond the pale - no problem seeing your son executed for that - but actual murder? No biggie, didn’t like the guy anyway, here’s your plane ticket.

In many of the videos he’s just yelling a people, not debating, and many of those people aren’t much older than kids. he’s being racist, being homophobic, islamophobic, anti semitic, championing gun ownership and excusing gun murders, being a misogynist, blathering on about women submitting to men and how they should get married before they’re 25 and have loads of babies, about how rape victims should be having the rapists babies even if those victims are children… he’s patronising, smug.
And doing it all in that shouty, arrogant, I-know- best- because I am a white CHRISTIAN man.

Your assumption is that people viewing his videos, especially for the first time, are going to be wowed by him… that’s really not the case.
It’s one thing to ‘debate’ with 18/19/20
year olds on campus - quite another when it’s grown adults watching your click bait and recognising it for what it is - click bait. Monetised click bait.

So im guessing you are on the side of "he deserved to die because I dont agree with his political views"?

OhNameChangeyThingie · 12/09/2025 18:06

On Sky News it was said that a Pastor, a friend of the family recognised him and reached out to the family to turn himself in. That he went to the house and then the father persuaded him to surrender and they went to the Marshals office at 10pm last night.

It was only a matter of time before he got caught. The police and FBI already had his car, his DNA. They would’ve had him by this morning.

Perhaps he had nowhere to run? Perhaps they thought that by turning himself in, by admitting what he’d done, they’d spare him the death penalty?

Nah I just love and have immense loyalty to my kids. I would burn the world down for my kids (with exceptions of being a pedophile or a rapist).

Me too

Cherrytree86 · 12/09/2025 18:07

Hoppinggreen · 12/09/2025 17:43

Very easily as it happens.

@Hoppinggreen

what if he raped someone? Would you let him get away with that too?

janehopper · 12/09/2025 18:07

They'd have found him anyway, I'm that situation it makes far more sense to turn yourself in.

Maddy70 · 12/09/2025 18:07

I know I should but I really don't think I could. I don't believe in the death penalty anyway but sending your son to be killed despite him having done something horrific isn't something I could live with

Icreatedausernameyippee · 12/09/2025 18:08

I would sooner hand myself in and claim I did it before handing my child over.

socks1107 · 12/09/2025 18:08

I would. He took another’s life, a father from two little children. He presumably knew the consequences of doing that. As difficult and gut wrenching as it would be I’d turn them in. They could kill again or be killed in arrest.

giantpurplepeopleeater3 · 12/09/2025 18:06

Immense love and loyalty for your kid if he’s a murderer, not so much if he’s a rapist. Strange principles you have.

Exactly he is 22, and had a plan. Not a kid that couldn’t make a shot.

I still disagree fundamentally with the death penalty.

The shot was not that difficult to make. Especially in a state with relaxed gun laws, like Utah. Lots of opportunity to practice.

ACynicalDad · 12/09/2025 18:09

Mrsttcno1 · 12/09/2025 15:33

It’s the death penalty that changes it for me.

If this was in the UK, and was my son, absolutely I would turn him in so it is in no way that I would want to help him avoid taking responsibility. It is an awful thing he has done and he should be held accountable.

But I fundamentally disagree with the death penalty, for anyone, so I truly don’t know.

Edited

I think this is where I am. But I'm not sure how you would avoid it in the States and get on the run.

Tbh, it's not really an issue as I'm raising them not to shoot people in the neck just because we find what they say deeply unpleasant and harmful.

Until he went on to murder someone else, and then you’d be in a pickle. Maybe your partner step in next time?
