What would your husband say if he came home from work and you’d had a drink?

I have had a glass of wine tonight after work, thought why not?
Dh is home and is furious, speaking to me like a disgrace and slamming cupboards.
I now have an uncomfortable silence which isn’t quite a silence because he’s saying he’s not giving me the silent treatment.

My husband would likely react like yours because he is an idiot who I hate being married to! Sending my condolences x

Lindy2 · 08/09/2025 19:25

I think you're entitled to have a glass of wine if you want one without needing permission. Assuming there's no missing information like you're an alcoholic or you needed to drive somewhere then your husband sounds like a bit of an arse.

My DH would probably just pour himself a glass too. Being adults we can make these choices for ourselves, just like you should be able to.

Perimenopausalmanicmum · 08/09/2025 19:26

My husbands response would be ‘oh jeez what’s happened now?’
I don’t generally drink so if I had one in my hand he would question it but wouldn’t care.

PestoHoliday · 08/09/2025 19:26

Unless you opened a special bottle he was saving, he was bang out of order.

NotMyRealAccount · 08/09/2025 19:26

"I wondered if you were ever going to get round to opening that bottle of toffee vodka/raspberry gin/exotic whisky that DD3 gave you for Christmas. Would I like it?"

CoralOP · 08/09/2025 19:29

Have you had previous conversations about your drinking?
I expect he would be really annoyed if you have drank too much in the past and have made promises to slow down/stop but if you drink 'normally' with no previous issues then it was OTT.

DailyMaui · 08/09/2025 19:29

He'd ask if we have any red in, because he only drinks that and I only drink white.

I drink alcohol whenever I like. And if it is a weekday, so be it. I'm having a glass of wine now. A very cold, crisp, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Absolutely delicious. I've been up since 0430, I've worked really hard today and all day yesterday, I cooked dinner both days and now I'm enjoying me time with my wine. Mummy and wine time.

My parents live in France and I much prefer their attitude to wine where they have a couple of glasses everyday. If my dad came home from... well, he doesn't work so it would be walking the dogs... he'd only be miffed that she'd started before the proper apero-in-the-garden-with-snacks time.

Mind you, even they are not as hardcore as their ancient builder who used to arrive at 0730, work like mad, stop at 1000 for a small glass of vin rouge, and work like mad until midday. Then he'd go off to the village restaurant for a menu du jour avec vin, come back and work like mad, then clock off at 4pm. AND his work was way better than many a builder I've seen!

whitesheepie · 08/09/2025 19:30

I’m drinking as he’s working on his pc upstairs. Who cares? Maybe your dh has had a rough day

Sortalike · 08/09/2025 19:30

DH wouldn't bat an eyelid, and neither would I if the situation was reversed.

We don't drink regularly so we'd either think one of us had won the lottery, or was celebrating, but most definitely wouldn't be cause for concern as a one off.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 08/09/2025 19:30

Wouldn’t care, we’re adults, we’re allowed to drink when we want.

Plastictreees · 08/09/2025 19:30

He sounds like a dick.

Firefly100 · 08/09/2025 19:31

Oh dear bad day?
which one did you open?
is it any good?
any left for me?
in that order.

Glitchymn1 · 08/09/2025 19:31

He might have one, or maybe say nothing at all. Slamming cupboards etc is OTT and controlling unless you become an ogre.

Scottishskifun · 08/09/2025 19:32

He would grab a glass and say can you pour me one too!

Unless you were sat drinking vodka neat out of the bottle which is a very different scenario his reaction is completely out of order and controlling.

Edit to say completely off topic but now I really fancy a cold glass of white wine 😂 sadly none in the house!

This is really worrying behaviour from your husband.

Is he able to articulate why he’s angry?

Auroraloves · 08/09/2025 19:34

Wowzel · 08/09/2025 18:57

He definitely wouldn't behave like that, but he'd be very surprised as I don't drink much

Same here. I can’t imagine him ever behaving like OPs husband. The stonewalling and slamming around is abusive

MadinMarch · 08/09/2025 19:34

khlolea · 08/09/2025 18:58

No but it is a bit unusual for me to have a drink without him

What's his problem! Very controlling behaviour, as you have an absolute right to make decisions on your own. You shouldn't let him bully you or make you feel bad. Ensure you don't put up with this nonsense at all.

PaxAeterna · 08/09/2025 19:35

This happened me last week when I randomly poured myself a glass of wine out of a bottle I was using in a recipe.

He shouted out to the kids what did you do to your mother, because now she is drinking wine at 5pm on a Monday,

Unless you have a problem around alcohol or you need to drive. I can’t understand why he would be cross.

chocolatebiscuitforme · 08/09/2025 19:35

Nicksschiffon · 08/09/2025 18:56

'Pour me one then' or something to that effect

This would be my DH's reaction, closely followed by 'bad day then darling? tell me about it'

lynnie75 · 08/09/2025 19:36

My husband would not care less and would probably join me 🥂

BuddyGiveOver · 08/09/2025 19:37

He wouldn't day anything unless I had a history if problem drinking and/or I finished work really early in the day. Then he might raise an eyebrow.

buffyfaithfredwesley · 08/09/2025 19:37

He’s in AA so would be concerned if I was ok - I don’t drink at home or have alcohol in around him
probably ask me WTF was wrong

Illegally18 · 08/09/2025 19:38

CurlewKate · 08/09/2025 19:00

Mine would join me. But is there any sort of back story here?

Yes, that's the question.

BeaLola · 08/09/2025 19:39

"Hello"

My DH and i often go to lunch on a Monday and he has a ping and I have a glass of wine

BeaLola · 08/09/2025 19:39

Has a pint (ping ?)
