to decorate for Autumn today and not wait until later in September?

We decorate our house for Autumn each year and usually do it the first week in September. I mentioned it to someone I know who said ‘you can’t do it yet as it’s not officially Autumn.’ Obviously I can do it when I like, but IF you decorate for Autumn, when do you do it? 🍂 🎃

If you don’t like decorating for autumn, see it as stuff for landfill, plastic tat, just another American thing etc, this probably isn’t the thread for you. 😊

don’t surround yourself with fruitcakes

Deepbluesea1 · 04/09/2025 07:55

do people decorate for Autumn???

And yes, it's your house. you do as you like. Just never heard seasonal decorating (just Xmas or Easter)

MyDadWasAnArse · 04/09/2025 07:55

Do you decorate for spring and summer too (I'm taking it for granted that you do for Christmas)?

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 04/09/2025 07:55

Oh, what decorations do you have? I don’t decorate for autumn, but very much lean into the change of seasons, more candles, lanterns, things like that! Interested to hear what else I could add in!

Paradoes · 04/09/2025 07:56

Do it.. I'm waiting another week or two as it doesnt feel that autumny where i live

but if you want to then go for it.

DurhamDurham · 04/09/2025 07:56

I thought Autumn began 1st September to end of November?

However I don’t think you need permission from anyone to decorate your home. Crack on I say.

I mean, it’s your house - do whatever you like.

I’ve never known anyone decorate for autumn though! Do you do it for all the other seasons?

Did you even read the OP? The OP knows they can do it when they want, the OP literally said that, they’re just asking when others do it if they do. 🙄 Try reading.

OP, we will be doing ours this weekend. I’ve got lots of stuff already but I’ve picked up a couple of new things as I do most years.

Gerardormikey · 04/09/2025 08:09

It’s your home, you do as you please.

I love Halloween, it’s my Christmas. If I wasn’t having building work, my house would be filled with ghosts and pumpkins now.

So don’t ask AIBU as per her thread title

post in property or similar.

the op did it for attention

socks1107 · 04/09/2025 08:10

I put my little pumpkins out on Monday. I’m going to enjoy them as long as I can

rainbowunicorn · 04/09/2025 08:10

Have all the people responding with the faux naivety that they have never heard of someone decorating for autumn not been in a shop for the last few years? Homeware departments are full of autumn themed decorations, cushions, throws etc. Just as they all have Easter/ spring / christmas wares at the appropriate time.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 04/09/2025 08:11

Well I see it as plastic tat and totally unnecessary, but it IS autumn. Meteorological autumn started 1st September, autumn is the months of June, July and August.

The idea autumn is 21st September - 21st December and then winter is 21st December to 21 March doesn't work for me. By the time we are into December it is most definitely winter here. Also 21st June is midsummer's day not start of summer day.

That;s meteorlogical autumn, proper autumn is at the equinox on/around 21st September to 21st December when odious winter sets in.

MyAcornWood · 04/09/2025 08:14

I don’t personally faff about decorating for different seasons as honestly I have too much to do as it is that I barely keep up with BUT my three year old son has been given the (light hearted before anyone comes for me for being controlling or whatever!) go ahead to start wearing his ghost-y jumper and glow in the dark ghost hat, so clearly, autumn has started, the ‘ber months are here and anything goes 🍄

And why you get to decide what "proper" autumn is? Meteorological autumn's definition is just as valid surely?

Because the autumn equinox is how it's been for bloody centuries!

AutumnIsFinallyHere · 04/09/2025 08:16

I started a similar thread yesterday OP but in the home decor section.

We will start ours at the weekend, we have a lot so it takes a few weekends to get it all done. Autumn is our favourite season.

Bryonyberries · 04/09/2025 08:18

I don’t decorate for autumn as such, although I do enjoy the season, but it tends to be when the air feels different and the conkers fall. As it gets colder I have different throws and candles and in October I put pumpkins on display along with fairy lights etc when the clocks change.

I love all the autumn stuff in the shops but I wouldn’t have anywhere to store things. Storing Xmas is hard enough in my little house.

WhereYouLeastExpect · 04/09/2025 08:19

I don't decorate for autumn but this is the time I start autumn crafts with my daughter. Pumpkins have also started appearing in the shops here - actually, we had cottage pie with pumpkin in it at the weekend. So I'd say not unreasonable at all.
