to decorate for Autumn today and not wait until later in September?

We decorate our house for Autumn each year and usually do it the first week in September. I mentioned it to someone I know who said ‘you can’t do it yet as it’s not officially Autumn.’ Obviously I can do it when I like, but IF you decorate for Autumn, when do you do it? 🍂 🎃

If you don’t like decorating for autumn, see it as stuff for landfill, plastic tat, just another American thing etc, this probably isn’t the thread for you. 😊

I have an autumn wreath, some needle felt pumpkins and pumpkin candles. I change my dried flowers to oranges and browns.

I like to do it in September to help me mourn summer but it feels odd if September lobs a hot day at us.

I did mine today.

What's the issue if people want to do it?
Did you not see the pictures above your comment.
A few ornaments and autumn colour flowers.
What's so unbelievably awful about that?

You can wash curtains???

I can't wash mine and storing would ruin them

And it's also the expense of more than one pair for the same room!

Why is it unreasonable?

Mistressofnone · 06/09/2025 08:44

Yep I’ve always put a few autumn motifs around the house. Usually mid-September but not beholden to that. I have a string of autumn leaves above the fireplace with some little lights and a few autumn candles, conkers (keep the spiders out). Half-wreath for the door. Love the autumn!

Only if you frequent the type of shop that sells all sorts of crap like B&M, The Range etc. I didn't see any when I was in M&S last week.

Landing page for the Home section of the M&S app at the moment 😊

Pinterest is your friend.

No, Pinterest is not my friend. I don’t want to see millions of links to US shite, I was wondering what the OP meant.

If 'decorate for Autumn' means 'buy lots of plastic crap from China, use it for a year or two then throw it in landfill', then I would say never.

When did this become a thing? Our planet cannot support this level of consumerism.

What on earth makes you think people don’t re-use their decorations? Do you throw out your Christmas decorations each year? Weird. Most people seem to love getting out the things they’ve had for decades each Christmas. No different with any other kind of seasonal decoration.

People on MN do seem to jump to the conclusion that autumn decorations means disposable plastic tat, I don't really know why. My autumn decorations are wooden ornaments. My mum's are vases and sofa throws.

Do it now and have fun. I decorate for Halloween for the entire month of October.
Im out gathering autumn berries st the moment to make jam and elderberry tincture for winter colds. It's the best time of the year.
It looks like autumn outside so it is autumn.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/09/2025 11:16

It’s obviously great for retailers, if people feel the need to go and buy lots of Autumn-y things.
Those who decorate, do you all have plenty of storage space for it all? We have plenty of loft space, but TBh I don’t think I could be arsed with it. All the Christmas decs. are enough to get out and stow away.

As for throws on sofas, we have them - the same ones - all year round (and we’re in the SE) since evenings can feel a bit chilly at any time of year.

Have all the people responding with the faux naivety that they have never heard of someone decorating for autumn not been in a shop for the last few years? Homeware departments are full of autumn themed decorations, cushions, throws etc. Just as they all have Easter/ spring / christmas wares at the appropriate time.

Nothing faux about it.

Then again I can’t remember the last time I was in a homeware department.

Do you not enter physical shops ever?

We don’t have that much, it’s just in a single carrier bag in the loft, whereas our Christmas stuff is in 3 boxes!

I like food shopping. I tend to avoid shopping other than that.

Our supermarket has autumn stuff - there’s where I’ve bought most of mine.

If mine does, they’re not putting it in the fish and chicken aisle.

Still, point is - nothing faux about my reaction. The idea of decorating for autumn is new to me. I don’t think I’ll be adopting it.

And you don’t have to. You sound quite blinkered and incurious, though.

WalkDontWalk · 06/09/2025 11:40

About this, yes. Almost willfully incurious.

Well, it sounds like anything if you’re blind to everything that isn’t in 2 aisles of the supermarket!

Itdoesntmatteranyway · 06/09/2025 11:44

There are people who leave their Christmas trees up all year.
You do you.

WalkDontWalk · 06/09/2025 11:44

There is a world outside the supermarket that engages my curiosity.
