to decorate for Autumn today and not wait until later in September?

We decorate our house for Autumn each year and usually do it the first week in September. I mentioned it to someone I know who said ‘you can’t do it yet as it’s not officially Autumn.’ Obviously I can do it when I like, but IF you decorate for Autumn, when do you do it? 🍂 🎃

If you don’t like decorating for autumn, see it as stuff for landfill, plastic tat, just another American thing etc, this probably isn’t the thread for you. 😊

I don’t decorate for autumn, but if I did I’d be doing it from the day the schools go back ie yesterday in my area. Regardless of dates and weather, first day back equals autumn in my world!

HappyNewTaxYear · 04/09/2025 12:01

What kind of things do you count as autumn decor then OP? Am intrigued. I wouldn’t know what to use.

Why would a complete stranger post for attention from a load of other complete strangers?

You could say that about the whole of mumsnet!

I’m doing it on 21st September this year, mostly because early September is often still a bit warm and summery. I get maximum satisfaction when it’s cold, gloomy and ideally lashing with rain outside!

I put my little pumpkins out on Monday. I’m going to enjoy them as long as I can

“Little pumpkins” - is that a euphemism? 😂

As much as I'd love to join the 'far too busy, sensible, cool..to even realise autumn decor exists' lot,
I actually love it and would love to see some pictures please!

Have all the people responding with the faux naivety that they have never heard of someone decorating for autumn not been in a shop for the last few years? Homeware departments are full of autumn themed decorations, cushions, throws etc. Just as they all have Easter/ spring / christmas wares at the appropriate time.

Have to say that my naïveté is genuine. I’ve only heard of decorating for autumn on Mumsnet and the odd reference in American novels. But I mostly use small shops so perhaps it’s a thing in big department stores.

How often do you wash your curtains?

If I was going to wash and change them anyway, then it's easy to change them to match the seasonal decor.

Also my general colour scheme is neutral. The soft furnishings are what brings the accent colours so it's easy to switch colour scheme.

You can wash curtains???

Depends how big and thick they are. Ours are all easily washable. I wash them maybe 2-3 times a year. Smile Some may need taking to the dry cleaners.

I have a few little pumpkin/ Halloweeny decoration things. It’s still a bit warm for me to feel autumnal as yet, it’s meant to be 22 degrees where I am this weekend. I do have some nice autumn themed candles in the kitchen but won’t be getting anything else out for a couple of weeks

outerspacepotato · 04/09/2025 15:08

I hang some fall leaf fairy lights with small command hooks in a dark archway and it's really nice in the late evening. I put pine branches and pine cones in a vase in my kitchen window and make a grapevine wreath with pinecones and leaves and feathers and whatnot and have a candle on chilly nights. I have various squashes on the dining room table as decor, painting subjects, and future meals. I get a pumpkin, youngest carves it, and I use the pumpkin for cooking and roast all the squash and pumpkin seeds. I make zucchini bread.

I usually start later but it's been below normal temps here so will probably do it a bit sooner.

I can genuinely tell you that the only reason I know that people decorate their house for Autumn is because I read a thread about it (probably this time last year) on MN. Never come across it in real life and no, I don't spend much time in shops. I tend to buy things online.

Only if you frequent the type of shop that sells all sorts of crap like B&M, The Range etc. I didn't see any when I was in M&S last week.

Oh my, M&S you say? You’re just so…so damned posh aren’t you?!!

(what is it with the judgy Hyacinth Bucket types that frequent Mumsnet? 🤪)

In answer to your question OP, I shan’t be decorating my fireplace with pumpkins/squashes and fairy lights till I stop bloody sweating. It’s still boiling here.

While we are being made to feel guilty about plastic bottles, the people who manufacture such shitty tat carry on thinking of new "themes" to flog. And people fall for it. Christ on a bike.

It's not exactly a "new theme".
As I said upthread B+M appear to be calling it the Harvest season.
Churches have always decorated the church for Harvest.

Oh dear, the M&Ss around here must be the chav relations, they had autumn decor pieces (no doubt you call them pieces), room scents/candles and autumnal arrangements/bouquets. They give themselves time to shift those, then put out the Halloween stuff. John Lewis has a range and of course the stuff that ends up in TKMaxx is designer/posh shops etc. It was Ikea/Aldi that started it, other nations do seasonal decorating.

Ponoka7 · 04/09/2025 16:03

@EuclidianGeometryFan I decorate for Halloween. It comes down on 1st November, or late on Halloween. Then I usually decorate for Christmas in December, this year it will be in November. I take some down on twelfth night and the rest on the Epiphany. Then around two weeks before Easter I decorate for Easter. I decorate my front window, using decorations and stickers. I'll replace with spring flowers and leave the lamb/palm cross decorations up (Easter ends at Pentecost). I do nothing over summer, but used to do my garden, we are moving into an apartment with a balcony and I'll summer plant window boxes. I use seasonal bedding and tea towels. I grew up with Mothering Sunday/Easter/Whit/Harvest festival etc being celebrated in the Church in the 70's.

Bradley28 · 04/09/2025 16:29

I love autumn, so I’ve had a few pumpkin ornaments around since the 1st of sept. Nothing major. Just like making the shift to my favourite season.

StarlightRobot · 04/09/2025 16:33

I decorated for Easter in February this year, so no judgment from me!

InMyHealthyEra · 04/09/2025 17:03

I decorated August 31st. I have new decorations this year so was far too excited to wait any later.

I have a stained glass maple leaf, DP hung it on our front door so the sun shines through it beautifully in the morning, streaking shades of orange and red across the wall, it’s beautiful!

It is lashing it down here! And it's been thundering.Just as we got home earlier there was a lightning flash and a massive crash of thunder at the exact same time - it must have been right above us. My daughter isn't usually afraid of storms but that one made her cry!
