to decorate for Autumn today and not wait until later in September?

We decorate our house for Autumn each year and usually do it the first week in September. I mentioned it to someone I know who said ‘you can’t do it yet as it’s not officially Autumn.’ Obviously I can do it when I like, but IF you decorate for Autumn, when do you do it? 🍂 🎃

If you don’t like decorating for autumn, see it as stuff for landfill, plastic tat, just another American thing etc, this probably isn’t the thread for you. 😊

Only if you frequent the type of shop that sells all sorts of crap like B&M, The Range etc. I didn't see any when I was in M&S last week.

Oh dear. Even M&S sell pumpkin ornaments, garlands etc. Maybe you should stop shopping there, it’s clearly too down market for one so superior as you. 😂

Have all the people responding with the faux naivety that they have never heard of someone decorating for autumn not been in a shop for the last few years? Homeware departments are full of autumn themed decorations, cushions, throws etc. Just as they all have Easter/ spring / christmas wares at the appropriate time.

I don't tend to look closely at the decorations and flourishes that they sell at the shops - just not my thing personally.

Of course, I've vaguely noticed the stuff in the shops, but it hadn't occurred to me that it was specifically autumn-themed and that some people like to specifically decorate for autumn.

If you want a brown cushion or a golden wreath or whatever and the shops sell them, I'd assume you'd buy and enjoy it - nothing wrong with that at all. It's just the specific 'decorating for autumn' - and then presumably packing/throwing the stuff away after autumn - that was unfamiliar to me.

Needmorelego · 04/09/2025 09:34

I was in B+M yesterday and they were calling the current season "Cosy Harvest" (or similar....it had harvest in the name).
Harvest time is usually now isn't it?
Bring on the seasonal decorations 🍁🍂🌰

Yes it's definitely a particular demographic, and Americans, who do it

PistachioTiramisu · 04/09/2025 09:34

Of course it's up to you how and when you want to decorate your house, OP. Personally, I cannot bear clutter around the house, and certainly not different types of clutter at different times of the year! Christmas decorations are bad enough - they look pretty enough when they are up, but I can't wait to get them put away every year!

Well I see it as plastic tat and totally unnecessary, but it IS autumn. Meteorological autumn started 1st September, autumn is the months of June, July and August.

The idea autumn is 21st September - 21st December and then winter is 21st December to 21 March doesn't work for me. By the time we are into December it is most definitely winter here. Also 21st June is midsummer's day not start of summer day.

21st June is the longest day, not midsummer day.

OP, if it feels autumnal and you’ve got some nice things you want to get out, you aren’t unreasonable to do that soon. It’s definitely autumnal here.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 04/09/2025 09:47

I'm being absolutely genuine when I say that I've never heard of decorating for Autumn. I assume this is a social media thing and I'm just not seeing that sort of content.

I do see September as being autumn though. I got married 29 years ago in early September and I had autumnal colours for my colour scheme.

Lalaloope · 04/09/2025 09:51

I don't care when anybody else starts theirs. Autumn is clearly here already when you look outside.

My autumn always starts 1st September just as my winter starts 1st December...and so on.

That's when I do my seasonal decor. I've been doing this long before I knew it was a thing. I have no idea what social media does as I don't follow them or post on any. To me, I'm just following nature's colours, not trends. I don't buy "plastic tat" or whatever, just flowers, cushions, throws, mugs, etc that I wash and reuse every year till I feel like getting new ones.

I always look forward to redecorating each season because it gives my home a fresh boost of accent colours. I also just enjoy decorating.

You’re obviously not, as no actual adult would speak like that.

'Grown assed adult' does sound very Hannah Montana (ie, like a 14 year old girl saying it!) 😬

That;s meteorlogical autumn, proper autumn is at the equinox on/around 21st September to 21st December when odious winter sets in.

But that means Winter is 21 Dec to 21 March, and so Spring is 21 March to 21 June, which is obviously too late for Spring.
Claiming that early June is Spring, not Summer, is nonsense.

21 June is midsummer, 21 Dec is midwinter, so 21 Sept is mid-autumn?
That doesn't sit well either.

I prefer to think that the seasons have got nothing to do with the equinoxes and solstices. Is is well known that the seasons, nature, and the weather lag well behind the equinoxes/solstices.

Either way, I am not being sucked into pointless, wasteful, environmentally damaging consumerism. I will buy new cushions when the current cushions have worn out, and not before.

I have to admit, up to a couple of years ago, I had never heard of it either! I only started it last year, and I don't do cushions and throws (though several of my neighbours do,) I just fo the windows/window ledges... Smile

Springwatch is on in early June, isn’t it?

Cadenza12 · 04/09/2025 10:06

I've never heard of decorating for autumn. I assumed the stuff in the shops were intended for Halloween.

Cadenza12 · 04/09/2025 10:07

According to Alexa autumn begins on 22 sept. Which seems about right

If it was a party I was throwing, I might just be tempted to buy some paper plates and napkins. 😀

I won't be "decorating for autumn" by buying stuff.

One thing puzzles me - do the people who 'decorate for autumn' then swap it over to decorate for Christmas, then after New Year they decorate for winter, and then do it again at some point for spring and again for summer?
Or is it just autumn that gets the treatment?

Another thing - should I capitalize the names of the seasons or not?

Me too. I really enjoy getting out my little wooden hedgehogs, pumpkins and doormice for autumn 😊. I send my mum a photo each season, which she enjoys very much, it's our little tradition.

We decorate for autumn and don’t do social media, other than mumsnet, but definitely no photos, videos etc. The decor is just for us to enjoy.

We will be doing our decorations at the weekend, or at least making a start anyway. Autumn has arrived in the last week or so.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 04/09/2025 10:10

In a sense it's not a thread for me

But what I love about mumsnet is it's a trip into foreign worlds

(however it is NOT autumn OP, it is end of summer and I will be sticking with that line till Sept 30th)

Helladelinquent · 04/09/2025 10:11

Tell them you go by the Celtic calendar and it’s been autumn since 1st August!

Yes but isn’t much of it content they’ve shot during the spring season? Unless it runs for the whole of spring it has to be aired right at the end.

We decorate for Autumn, add a bit more for Halloween at the end of October, then swap for Xmas. After Xmas, we have 4 birthdays so the house seems to be decorated a lot for birthdays, not winter. We do decorate for Easter and Spring. We don’t decorate for Summer as we spend most of it in another country so we are hardly home.

Some of it, yes, but obviously the live cams are filmed in that timeframe of early June.

I’m just addressing that poster’s claim that early June can’t possibly count as spring.
