to decorate for Autumn today and not wait until later in September?

We decorate our house for Autumn each year and usually do it the first week in September. I mentioned it to someone I know who said ‘you can’t do it yet as it’s not officially Autumn.’ Obviously I can do it when I like, but IF you decorate for Autumn, when do you do it? 🍂 🎃

If you don’t like decorating for autumn, see it as stuff for landfill, plastic tat, just another American thing etc, this probably isn’t the thread for you. 😊

How pathetic

Itiswhysofew · 06/09/2025 11:47

I notice this autumn decoration stuff is really being pushed in the shops now.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/09/2025 11:55

The extent to which I decorate for autumn is to have some fairy lights up (and battery changed 😂) and buy some autumnal looking flowers as and when.

But I’d always do it as soon as I feel autumnal, which is from around now.

If it was a party I was throwing, I might just be tempted to buy some paper plates and napkins. 😀

I won't be "decorating for autumn" by buying stuff.

One thing puzzles me - do the people who 'decorate for autumn' then swap it over to decorate for Christmas, then after New Year they decorate for winter, and then do it again at some point for spring and again for summer?
Or is it just autumn that gets the treatment?

Another thing - should I capitalize the names of the seasons or not?

Well, me personally. I do decorate for Autumn now - as I said, I only started it last year. Smile Maybe the third week in September, as there are loads of flowers still about right now - including lots of sunflowers. So I will do it around 22-23 September. (There will still be some flowers, but a few less, as some of the sunflowers will have died off by then...)

Then I will add Halloween stuff to the Autumn display around 25-26 October, and take them down 1-2 November. I LOVE Halloween and get loads of sweets in for Trick or Treat...(And I like to dress up too!) The whole village 'does' Halloween, and some people dress up and walk around 'scaring' the children. Grin

Then I put up a poppy/Rememberance Day display around 7-8 November, and take it down around 15 November, then the Christmas stuff goes up 1 December.

Christmas comes down around 6 January, then I put a mini Valentines display up for a few days in mid Feb, then an Easter display for the 2 weeks of Easter - the week before and the week after. Then for the summer, the flowers start coming in during May, June, and July, and August, (and I have lots of garden ornaments/quite a big garden,) so nothing else is needed really. Then we're back to September again.

Don't judge me, I know I'm a bit bonkers. 😂

Should the seasons be capitalised? Hmmmm, good question. I do capitalise them! Smile

It amazes me why people feel the need to be so patronising about something that doesn’t affect them. If you don’t want to decorate for autumn (or any other event or season) that is perfectly fine. We are all different.

It doesn’t have to involve buying lots of plastic tat and throwing it away every year. It can be very simple and for some people a nice way to mark the change of the season. For me I struggle a bit coming into winter with the dark evenings etc. so putting out a few autumn bits and having some candles makes me feel a bit cosier and better about winter coming.

If you dint want to do it fine. But maybe trying not being patronising and nasty to those who do things differently to you. It doesn’t make you any more superior to the rest of us.

HiThere2024 · 06/09/2025 12:16

I put up my Autumn decor a few days ago.

Have all the people responding with the faux naivety that they have never heard of someone decorating for autumn not been in a shop for the last few years? Homeware departments are full of autumn themed decorations, cushions, throws etc. Just as they all have Easter/ spring / christmas wares at the appropriate time.

This is very true. Asda have a range of autumn cushions, Matalan has autumnal bedding, my user name is fashionable again, and the little ceramic pumpkin candle holder I still haven’t tidied away from last year is about to stop looking incongruous.

CoconutSky · 06/09/2025 12:28

I do mine at the end of September. Then I’ll leave it up until say mid November, then I put my Xmas tree up 🤣
decorate whenever you like! It’s only abit of fun x

AmyDudley · 06/09/2025 12:37

I don't decorate for autumn (not saying that to be judgemental in any way, just declaring my total lack of expertise in this area) but if I did, I think as it is only 6 september we may still have some late summery days to come, I would want to save my autumny decs until the leaves start turning and there is a bit of a chill in the air. If I can still happily go for a walk without a jumper and in shorts (which I can) then it doesnt feel autumny to me.

Having said that, you do whatever makes you feel happy and brings you joy, no one else's opinion matters.

This is why I leave it til later! Early September is too erratic for me to commit to autumn decor.

I'm in the camp of "you're an adult, do what you want" BUT I will say:

As a postie I love seeing all the different decorations people put up at different times of year (and counting how many houses have the same B&M pumpkin wreath) but please for the love of fuck don't hang shit on your door that covers your letterbox. I've already had to shove aside three sets of wicker hanging hearts and knocked off one giant wreath while struggling to get someone's 6 magazine subscriptions through their door. That goes for those giant ridiculous bows that everyone puts up at Christmas too.

Please people if you must adorn your houses with stuff, think of your postie and leave your letterbox clear.

Does no one remember collecting conkers and pinecones on the way to school when they were little children?
Then lining them up on their windowsill or book shelves.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 04/09/2025 07:55

Oh, what decorations do you have? I don’t decorate for autumn, but very much lean into the change of seasons, more candles, lanterns, things like that! Interested to hear what else I could add in!

"Lean into..." 🤢

Yes! I still do this with DD!
Theres a small rural “woods” near us and I take her down at the changing of the seasons every year.

Yet people on this thread are claiming decorations for seasons is a new concept 😂
There is something lovely about a shiny new conker 🌰

If 'decorate for Autumn' means 'buy lots of plastic crap from China, use it for a year or two then throw it in landfill', then I would say never.

When did this become a thing? Our planet cannot support this level of consumerism.

Why are there always people who assume decorating for autumn means 'plastic crap from China'? As for when did it become a thing..... Decorating for autumn/the harvest/Lammas has been a thing for hundreds (probably thousands) of years. This is not new folks.

No, Pinterest is not my friend. I don’t want to see millions of links to US shite, I was wondering what the OP meant.

😂😂😂😂 righto!

MeinKraft · 06/09/2025 14:34

There’s always the danger of summer making a comeback so i’d give it a couple of weeks!

Babetti · 06/09/2025 14:46

I'm still hoping that are some sunny September days ahead but 1 August is the traditional beginning of autumn in Ireland and what we learned in school. I only learned about meteorological autumn (1 Sept - 30 Nov) and astronomical autumn (22 Sept - 21 Dec) relatively recently.

In Irish, Fómhar means autumn or harvest and these are the autumn months:
Lúnasa (Aug - named for Lugh)
Meán Fómhair (Sept) means middle of harvest/autumn
Deireadh Fómhair (Oct) means end of harvest)

As for decorating, I don't think it's anything new - sunflowers in autumn, holly in winter, daffodils in spring, roses in summer. It's a way to mark the changing of the season.

tigger1001 · 06/09/2025 14:54

I've started changing things over this week.

I don't get some of the posters on here. It can't be too much to consider others do different things and that includes decorating for the seasons. If you enjoy it, then do it, if not don't. It's all ok.

mine isn't "plastic tat" anyway. I craft, and add things to my collection each year, for all the seasons. I make crepe paper flowers and change these according to the season. I enjoy it and enjoy being able to do small things that change how my living space looks and fits in with the seasons

I thought Autumn began 1st September to end of November?

However I don’t think you need permission from anyone to decorate your home. Crack on I say.

Me too. September is definitely autumn even if you sometimes have a late bout of summery weather at the start.

Lavenderandbrown · 06/09/2025 22:24

yep op I started decorating the first weekend of September but I’m American and Labor Day means the end of summer to me. I put up wreaths and have some lovely very carefully selected faux pumpkins including little velvet pumpkins I started with 15 yrs ago These will segue into real pumpkins as soon I source them. I drive by several pumpkin “patches” and I have my favorite growers I purchase from every year. And if I see a real cutie at the supermarket I buy that too. I cut down limelight hydrangeas and decorate with those in baskets and a huge grapevine wreath. AND….i also decorate at work! That’s where my Halloween is displayed. Many of these Halloween items I have had since my dc were toddlers. I have always loved Halloween way before it became so very popular in the USA. I buy a lot of vintage items and I’m always looking for unique vintage holiday decor.

I love to decorate for the seasons and it’s enjoyed by my family friends and (@work) patients.

XenoBitch · 06/09/2025 22:27
