If one was to ‘find’ some spray paint how might one amusingly deface a St George’s Cross (hypothetically ofc)

Just as the title says really. We’ve thought of a game of noughts and crosses but figured you Vipers might have a good idea of some other visual effects that could be added. TIA

You are being unreasonable = stop
spoiling the knuckledraggers fun

you are not being unreasonable = crack on gals!

You could maybe just grow up and ignore it! You are no better than the person doing it if you go around defacing them (and it's disrespectful to the country).

Everyone's views are valid but by defacing the flag you are just encouraging them in a game of tit for tat. We currently don't live in a society that says one person's views are more valid than another and we have the freedom to express ourselves which is why so many people want to come here.

I'm proud to be British/English and I'm not going to let a bunch of people from the left or far right make me ashamed of the fact or hijack my national flag. Should I stop wearing my England Rugby shirt? My England hoodie? It has the cross of St George on after all.

I'd also really like to know when people have been putting them up because someone has spent a fair bit of time doing it.

Arealnumber · 02/09/2025 07:04

Why would you want to deface your own flag (presuming you’re English)? Are you a loon who actually supports the current shameful government, concommitantly suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome?

WilfredsPies · 01/09/2025 20:24

I agree. It will only lose its power as a symbol of the right when the left start using it to promote the opposite message.

After all, many of us are of an age where it was completely unacceptable to use the word ‘queer’ and now young adults upwards refer to themselves and everyone else using that word, without it even occurring to them that others might still find it offensive. I believe it’s well on the way to being ‘reclaimed’.

A symbol of the ‘far right’ not ‘’right’. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being right or left wing.

It's not inherently racist but it's definitely being flown/ used with racist intent

Yes, it can be either or both.

Just like plenty of people have always naturally had no hair on their heads, or have decided that they look/feel better shaving it all off - all totally innocent and great; but that doesn't mean that fascists haven't also sometimes co-opted the 'skinhead' theme to have a very sinister understanding.

The Indian svastika, an ancient, sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism that means "well-being" or "good fortune" and that was traditionally associated with prosperity and luck was twisted into a symbol of bigotry and cruelty by the Nazis.

In this way, a previously positive symbol (our flag) has been twisted to have negative connotations by the far right.

Just because something has an original meaning, doesn't mean that meaning remains static. Right now, the plethora of flags are being flown to represent racism and bigotry.

smallglassbottle · 02/09/2025 12:06

The best thing to do is leave it alone and get on with your day. Don't let such trivialities effect you so much as to post on the internet about how to change it. It is benal and all things will pass away. There is nothing you can do about anything.

Shirtstop · 02/09/2025 12:11

Thispupsgottofly · 01/09/2025 20:08

The flag in itself isn't racist but you can bet your bottom pound sterling the people painting them on roundabouts and drain covers are.
Smh

Yes, this. People going out at night to paint roundabouts are doing it to make a point, and that point is entirely racist.

The flag itself is not racist, but it is being used deliberately to make "foreigners" and specifically those of different ethnicities, feel unwelcome. How can that be anything other than racist?

There needs to be a major re brand....

Sadly rhw flag has been hijacked by the far right..

No way would I ever fly it, because of this hijacking...

Much as how the nazi symbol was hijacked from ancient cultures.

I mean... Why would you?!

There should be a major re brand!

The St George’s flag topic is so divisive.

Everanewbie · 02/09/2025 12:24

Any ideas how I can improve the Palestine flags flying everywhere I look too?

suitcasesarepacked · 02/09/2025 12:30

BurlyShriggs · 01/09/2025 20:02

Why on earth is the England flag racist when I bet you wouldn’t say that about Scottish people waving their flags? If you have fallen for the narrative that it’s been appropriated by racists then the logical thing to do is to fly it yourself and show that it’s our national flag and not the property of racists.

Any flag in the hand of nationalists becomes something non-neutral because it is a dog-whistle method of weaponising identity. Scotland during the independence referendum is a case in point.

RobertaFirmino · 02/09/2025 12:54

I would spray the whole thing red then paint LFC in the middle. Either that or an anatomically dubious spunking cock and balls.

You’re completely right, my apologies. I meant the far right and thought that was what I’d typed. A combination of brain fog and entertaining a toddler all day.

scalt · 03/09/2025 06:20

Now the flags are on lamp posts where I am. I so want to attach a sign which says “why half mast? Is Farage dead?”

Namelessnelly · 03/09/2025 06:35

Newsenmum · 01/09/2025 20:01

Making them into pride flags would be brilliant

So if someone painted a pride flag on a roundabout you’d be ok with it being defaced? If not, why not?

Katemax82 · 03/09/2025 06:56

On the motorway bridge near Maidstone Somone spray painted the word "gammon" on a flag that was hanging

Rip them down

CallMeMessy · 03/09/2025 07:23

Add some nice colourful stripes. Red orange yellow green…

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 03/09/2025 07:30

I was pondering the very same thing OP.
I’m sick of all bloody flags.
Never want to see another one unless it is at the olympics.

allusernamesaretakennow · 03/09/2025 07:46

Do you also think if ways to deface Palestinian or Ukrainian flags?

Grow up.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 03/09/2025 07:52

Paint the cross brown

Or a nice ombré - every shade from beige to black

Iwantmyoldnameback · 03/09/2025 08:00

"Buy a flag pole" Or just fill it in to make a red flag.

allusernamesaretakennow · 03/09/2025 08:02

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/09/2025 21:02

I'm picturing Nasty Fucking Farage sad faced on the front page of the Daily Flail, bemoaning a google eyed flag as an, 'Assault on patriotism'. And the googly eyes just gazing out at the Flail's readers accusingly, but the readers being too thick to understand what the eyes are trying to tell them.

This type of slurring people who have concerns really doesn't help and doesn't make you look clever. Just divisive and adding to the problems.

allusernamesaretakennow · 03/09/2025 08:06

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 01/09/2025 21:14

Spray a nice big sign outside your house
" I am the best, follow me for righteous words and direction"?

I miss the laughing emoji.

Goldplatedhinges · 03/09/2025 08:10

I grew up in Northern Ireland - I hate all flags! To me they represent possession and ownership, exclusion and decisiveness. The so called country pride associated with flags is not benign.

Ethelflaedofmercia · 03/09/2025 08:10

Utterly pathetic, get a grip.
