If one was to ‘find’ some spray paint how might one amusingly deface a St George’s Cross (hypothetically ofc)

Just as the title says really. We’ve thought of a game of noughts and crosses but figured you Vipers might have a good idea of some other visual effects that could be added. TIA

You are being unreasonable = stop
spoiling the knuckledraggers fun

you are not being unreasonable = crack on gals!

Some locals here (teens I’m assuming.. based on nothing) have drawn a big weed leaf on the flag hung up on a local monument.
I’d like to see a peace sign or maybe the Harry Potter symbol.
Can’t stand the England flag it has been associated with racists my whole life.

How? I've never associated it with racism before.

PurpleChrayn · 01/09/2025 20:16

Grow up.

WhereIsMyJumper · 01/09/2025 20:16

The flag that you hate so much represents such a huge amount of tolerance that you’re allowed to hate it. Even deface it.

I doubt citizens in North Korea would get away with defacing their flag.
I shouldn’t think it would be welcomed in the US, either.

smallpinecone · 01/09/2025 20:17

I’m sure this couldn’t end badly 😂

Ah well, as long as you don’t complain if someone had a can of spray paint handy and went to work on a Pride flag. Or a Ukrainian flag. What you can do, others can do too.

(gals 🤢)

I'm not English but I find the OPs question so sad to read

It is the flag of your country and shouldn't be defaced.

I think people need to take pride in their flag and 'take it back' so to speak.

I think it's very sad that it seems to be seen (rightly or wrongly) by some as racist and I wished it drew people together rather than separating or dividing a country

I agree. It will only lose its power as a symbol of the right when the left start using it to promote the opposite message.

After all, many of us are of an age where it was completely unacceptable to use the word ‘queer’ and now young adults upwards refer to themselves and everyone else using that word, without it even occurring to them that others might still find it offensive. I believe it’s well on the way to being ‘reclaimed’.

It’s been a symbol of the far right for many years. The far right are very racist.

Mumofteenandtween · 01/09/2025 20:31

“Go Red Roses!” That is what we should be using the flag to celebrate.

It’s been a symbol of the far right for many years. The far right are very racist.

And the left are self hating, sycophantic, apologists.

AgnesX · 01/09/2025 20:34

I really wouldn't. It's not the flags, it's the idiots that wave them in the misguided belief it's patriotism.

LeticiaMorales · 01/09/2025 20:34

Namechange822 · 01/09/2025 20:05

I think that you could probably use a marker to add the line “Breaking news: Turkish born, Palestinian raised immigrant becomes English Saint” across the top of it.

"Although his history is largely myth, see stories of dragon"

Absolutely this. Take it back.
Don't contribute to the division.

ViperHalliwell · 01/09/2025 20:36

There's nothing wrong with the St. George's cross except the many ways that people have misused it. Ones that are flying legitimately (on public or COE buildings as always, or on private buildings) should be left alone. Ones that idiots have put up in unsafe places should be taken down.

BUT the ones people have painted on traffic circles and such by random artists are fair game. You could write ❤REFUGEES WELCOME ❤ or if you want to be more subtle ❤WELCOME TO ENGLAND ❤in contrasting paint either above, below or next to the flag image, or (more controversial) across the horizontal bar.

Other possibilities:
Deport racists
Embrace humanity
Erase hate
Fight ignorance
New home, new hope
No one is illegal
No place for hate
No to fascism
One race: human
One world 🌍
Peace ☮️
Safety, shelter, support
Together we thrive
Welcome, humans !!

Yep

Notashamed13 · 01/09/2025 20:41

I would not do anything to St George's Cross, it's the flag of my birth country.

NoThanksNeeded · 01/09/2025 20:41

Yes because that won't serve to cause more tension, inflame the right wing to more extreme action or blame the "wrong sort"

ScholesPanda · 01/09/2025 20:41

YABU. They'll love it, and it will be tit for tat. Like a fun game that we can all pay some extra council tax for you to play.

LadyRoughDiamond · 01/09/2025 20:42

There are few things in life that aren’t vastly improved by a pair of googly eyes. Don’t deface the flags, just make them look vaguely ridiculous (and a lot friendlier).

Lutonsgirl · 01/09/2025 20:43

It's an oxymoron.

Notashamed13 · 01/09/2025 20:43

But then I wouldn't do anything to any country's flag as its very disrespectful.

Namechangechangeobv · 01/09/2025 20:43

Some great ideas here - thank you!

I like these

Far right groups have often used national flags to promote some appalling messages, this is by no means unique to England.

I would like something that takes the meaning, "Hey that's my flag too; and for me it represents values including tolerance and diversity; you can't have it". But that's not very snappy. Welcome to England might do instead.

Digidestined · 01/09/2025 20:46

The did is these are being flown on flag poles outside a beautiful building which is amazingly cultural.

The flags op is talking about aren't real flags or in places of cultural relevance. They are graffiti painted by racists to intimidate people. Nothing amazingly cultural about that, they're an embarrassment.

An actual England flag on a pole outside the houses of parliament is a cultural image and would never be defaced. Obviously.

The fact that you're even trying to compare the two scenarios is ridiculous.

I’d be doing neither. National flag on a civic building? Totally normal.
Half way up a lamppost or badly graffitied on a roundabout, not so much.
