I was recently in Georgia (the country).
Their flag is the same with added crosses! Quite charming.

The St George shouldnt be a racist symbol and I feel by defacing them and tearing them down just reaffirms them as racist and strengthens this symbolism.

I only put flags up to support our sports teams. But it saddens me instead of celebrating our culture its used to make others feel unwelcome

I just wish people would hang flags on their property or out their windows etc. I couldn’t care less about that but hate seeing them on roundabouts and lampposts. What’s to stop everyone putting up their own flag on lampposts etc. Plus it will cost money to take them down and clean everything up.

It angers and frightens me that you feel the need to deface it, it’s the flag of England, would you feel the same if immigrants destroyed it ?

I’m not proud of what England is becoming I hate to think what it will be like in a few more years. But defacing our flag is not the way to bring the great back into Great Britain.

I'd prefer it if they were done properly. It just seems to be a bunch of cheap, small, nylon flags cable-tied to lamp posts. Not just in England, a proliferation of Welsh flags have appeared on lamp posts here in the last week or so.

Would be much better if there were fewer but better flags. Get some decent sized ones and have them mounted properly on public buildings. Look at the Lionesses homecoming parade on The Mall. Every other Union Flag had been switched for a St George's Cross. That looked quite good (and I'd have switched the lot for the event, instead of just half of them). One decent-sized flag fluttering on a flagpole looks far better than a dozen cheap ones cable-tied to lamp posts.

If you happened across a can of white spray paint instead, you could deface it by painting a white cross over it and make it look just like a roundabout.

This is so weird to read as someone who isn't English or British. Why would anyone hate their national flag? So what if people put it on roundabouts etc, What's bad about patriotism?

At a time when the government are announcing that immigrants have more rights than citizens, what could possibly go wrong with provoking people who are angry, scared and financially struggling?

Grow the hell up. I’m fucking sick and tired of people thinking it’s ok to have a go at the English flag just because SOME racist arseholes try and appropriate it. The flag itself is NOT a symbol of racism. Certainly no more than the Welsh Scottish or Irish. Would it be ok to joke about defacing them? Some hardline extremely xenophobic nationalists have tried hijacking the Scottish saltire but funnily enough I don’t feel like defacing that because I’m a grown up.

Its interesting that people think that the way to stop this is to bring even more attention to it.
If the various councils had left the flags up for a couple of weeks till they got ratty and weather worn, it would (IMO) have prevented all of the painting on the crossings etc. and we would already be back to whatever homeostasis we were in.

Paint the outside green and write "1st Aid" on it.

You could turn it into the Georgian flag by adding extra crosses.

You could list the countries, regions and cities that have St George as patron saint.
