If one was to ‘find’ some spray paint how might one amusingly deface a St George’s Cross (hypothetically ofc)

Just as the title says really. We’ve thought of a game of noughts and crosses but figured you Vipers might have a good idea of some other visual effects that could be added. TIA

Making them into pride flags would be brilliant

I would be much more annoyed at pride flags than our national flag. What a ridiculous idea.

I'm not English but I find the OPs question so sad to read

It is the flag of your country and shouldn't be defaced.

I think people need to take pride in their flag and 'take it back' so to speak.

I think it's very sad that it seems to be seen (rightly or wrongly) by some as racist and I wished it drew people together rather than separating or dividing a country

Thank you x

Genuinely. Help me. 15 individuals already agree with me. Why is it OK to talk about defacing any flags?????? How disrespectful.

The performative outrage is funny. Just report it or don't. No need to announce "I am SO offended! I MIGHT report it!"

Also it's absolutely clear that no one is talking about defacing real flags flown properly on public buildings, they're talking about defacing the shit graffiti done by racists to intimidate immigrants. If that offends you it's clear what kind of person you are, and trust me, no one cares about those kinds of people being offended. The kind of person offended by anti racism might just not be that nice... You know?

And don't try to claim it's nothing to do with racism and claim it's patriotism and people being proud of being English. We all know this is "operation fly the flag" endorsed by Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage and others of their ilk. We all know what it means.

At least 20 people agree with me that it's funny so I'm not that concerned about your 15.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 01/09/2025 21:06

"Yay Women's Rugby" or something like that?

I can't get over all the wide eyed fake naivety of "what do you mean its been used as a racist symbol? This has never happened before!".

My area of Wales was the first place the Welsh flags started popping up as part of this "operation raise the colours" (something like that), and the general reaction from normal people was "oh no, they're trying to make it like the English flag".

It's a very predictable pattern. The English flag was associated with a lot of general violence and thuggery which slid into xenophobic / racist violence over time, largely because it was perpetuated by people draped in England flags or wearing England football shirts and that image stuck.

Then, because that image has stuck, those same people complain "you can't fly an English flag these days or you get called racist / a thug". Normally reasonable people then start to think "well, you know, they've got a point - why can't we put our flags up without being called racist or thugs?".

Meanwhile, the people shouting the loudest are forcing the association between the flag and racist / thug behaviour by graffiting the flag in places or accompanying it with slogans of "stop the boats" or "go back home". They create the link between the rhetoric and the flags, but when people take the flags down, it's "they want us to stop waving our flags! They want to take away our national identity!".

It's a very deliberate attempt to covertly link the flag to views ranging from concerns about immigration to outright racial hatred, because the two then become intertwined. You can't then challenge the views, because then you're criticised for hating the flag. It's a very useful shield for cowards.

The OP is not talking about the crosses that have appeared. They have specifically asked how you would deface the St Georges Cross - its not on. Edited - spelling.

Edited

My apologies. I’m sorry you feel triggered. I should have been more clear. The St George’s crosses I alluded to look like my 4 year old made them and got my 7 year old to steal some cable ties from my shed to attach them to the roundabout at Tesco.

Why would you deface (presumably) your own country's flag?
Horrible behaviour. Leave it alone or move abroad.

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 01/09/2025 21:08

So you don’t like the vandalism but you’re going to deal with that by creating more vandalism. How old are you?

Catchee · 01/09/2025 21:08

smallpinecone · 01/09/2025 20:00

Should people do this to all the flags they dislike? I assume you think they’re all fair game OP.

Ukrainian flags? Or Palestinian flags? Or Pride flags? Hmmm…

I have seen some turned into the pride flag.

Also, you can get England flag thongs and mankinis. If we're talking about desecrating the flag, I think Pete from Basildon's sweaty bollocks are more of an issue than some googly eyes on a graffiti'd roundabout in the grand scheme of things.

Made in China. (Because the flags probably are.)
We love boats.
I love “Nigel is laughing at you”.
This side up. (Because of the hoohah about flying union flags upside down.)
RIP Trump. (We can only hope! Appropriate with the flags at half mast.)
You’re all individuals. (Because the flag flying is a huge herd mentality.)
Should have gone to Specsavers. (For a badly painted one, or when 🇩🇰 has been painted by mistake)
Ladders ‘R us.
Longer ladder needed. (Half mast again)
Keep Britain tidy.
Just start oil.

And, if anybody painted these, the flags would disappear at the speed of light:
Never forgive Partygate.
Covid 1984.
Lockdown killed granny.

Really interesting to read about people 'taking back' the St George Cross flag. It's widespread use is a pretty recent thing.

Before the 90s it really wasn't much used. I rarely saw it in the 70s and 80s and, if you look at photos of the England crowd for the 1966 World Cup final the flag used there was the Union Jack - not a George Cross to be seen.
