To think that people are very harsh on here.

I'm quite new on here but have been on forums for years and owned several. I miss forums, so thought I'd give this one a try. I am truly shocked at how some posters on here speak to people who are clearly upset with various issues. AIBU?

Oh yes, you can post a thread on almost any topic and before long one or several posters will be along to tell what an awful person you are.

Complet · 01/09/2025 15:53

I think people post in AIBU to get traffic so they want a wide range of opinions. I’m not sure you can expect everyone to agree with you and sometimes people need some harsh truths! If you look at other threads, they are very supportive and caring.

Harsh truths? Maybe, but there are ways of delivering them.

It is quite boring though, to alight on a forum that’s new to you, and immediately reprimand everyone for not fitting in with your ideals.

No?

(I mean, we get this same thread every week.)

Chompingatthebeat · 01/09/2025 15:59

Lots of kind responses too, maybe focus on the positives

whenimnotcleaningwindows · 01/09/2025 16:02

There's always a fair amount of trolls on here too - so sometimes regulars think "oh no, not another thread on 'women should have their tubes tied'" and assume the thread is goady.

You do know you don't need to reply, if you find it so boring?

NotTerfNorCis · 01/09/2025 16:04

There is a minority of nasty people. Unfortunately their posts stand out because of the spite.

Thank you for proving my point.

It's anonymous, so people show their true colours without repercussion.

Then maybe that says something…..

A concept lost on some people.

And on this basis, I've started understanding how people can be incredibly mean and selfish in real life! It's just human nature.

In the time it took to create yet another thread about how nasty the forum is, you could have been working away on the threads where you spotted the nastiness. You could have stuck up for the OP, disagreed with the harsh posters, given advice of your own and generally done your bit to help the OPs you felt sorry for and make the forum a more supportive place. Did you do that? Or did you just jump straight to spreading a little more negativity?

I did. Which is fucking why I started this thread.

AIBU is traditionally a bit of a bear pit. It's the best bit of mumsnet in my opinion 🤣 but i have been here since it was all fields ...

There are specific boards on mumsnet for specific more sensitive problems. The posters there are kind and the info. and support unfailing. (i know - i've been on both sides of it in the past) But here it's ask your question and put on your tin hat !

Welcome OP 😊

Charabanc · 01/09/2025 16:14

Sounds like the forums you owned failed, OP. Maybe take some lessons from this one, that you have chosen to join, and yet have immediately started criticising?

MN is full of feisty women, and non-feisty women, who love to discuss and chat. Some areas are gentler than others. As a personal recommendation, do not ask about breeding puppies in the Dog forum, or about soup makers anywhere.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 01/09/2025 16:15

I think sometimes people's recollections of forums are of them being lovely matey places but I was reading a 20 year old digital spy thread about a utterly trivia tv show last night and there was still someone on there being a dick. So in a way it's it's really not that different now.

of course if some do find MN too robust then there's always the other place with just a different formation of letters!

Laiste · 01/09/2025 16:15

Do we still recommend Netmums?
Does it still exist ?!

SOUP MAKERS? 😳
