To send DD to year 7 in Mary Janes

Are these shoes (below) acceptable for starting secondary school year 7?
DD has literally only just turned 11 years old a few weeks ago. She's so young still. And she loves these shoes for their comfort and she likes the style.
But will she get comments about them being babyish??
She has tried on 10 different pairs of school shoes - flat brogues, chunky brogues, chunky T bars, patent chunky T bars, DMs, boys smart trainer style school shoes and loafers.....and there has been something wrong with all of them - too stiff, too hard leather, too heavy, too narrow at the toes, rubbing at heels or rubbing below ankles, too uncomfortable....every pair, all 10 pairs. And these are all from retailers such as Clarks, Startrite, Next, M&S, DM, Schuh.
Then she put these on and they fit like a glove. They are soft, supportive, instantly ultra comfortable......she said "Ah mummy, these are perfect!".
BUT, she's also desperate to fit in with the other girls at her new secondary school and also doesn't want to be seen to be babyish in her style.
Who knew buying secondary school shoes was such a minefield!
Are these OK, or too young for year 7?
I hate even asking this question! If she'd been born a few weeks later she'd have been starting year 6 next week, not year 7, and I wouldn't even be questioning shoe style!

The shoes are fine, but her calling you "mummy" probably won't be

Why? I call my mother mummy, I´m 51. But I do refer to her as my mother in the third person though. But who cares?

Shmoigel · 02/09/2025 12:13

These were my shoes in the 90s! The trauma!

I'm 48 years old and I use Mary Janes shoes. They are a classic.

LER83 · 02/09/2025 17:56

My dd is 13 and going into year 9 and has shoes just like that, she picked them herself. Most of the girls wear similar. They have a strict dress code and are not allowed to wear anything remotely like a trainer, not even the boys, have to be smart/formal. Have to wear black tights year round also, no socks allowed.

My boss's sons, aged 16 and 18, still call him "daddy" and they're both very much the "cool kids" in their school.

HellenaHandbag · 02/09/2025 21:24

Nope they are great. Have a fussy 12 year old here, she had that style all through year 7 last year and has chosen the same style for year 8 too.

Royaly82 · 03/09/2025 20:05

I have 4 daughters that have been through 3 different secondary schools. All had similar in year 7 with no issues she will be fine.
They are plain and non remarkable.
Hope she had a great first day 😊

Where do you live OP? Here that would be social sucide in Y7 but if you have a kinder cohort than my daugher did then I think they are lovely shoes ( and the ones my DD had in Y5 but she has big feet).

My daughter has just started y5 today and has these shoes they are so comfy! And nice and plain , she will be fine with them in y7 id think

Libbylacarotious · 03/09/2025 20:11

My daughter is going into y10 and still has her lelly Kellie school shoes and people don't best an eyelid.

EFB2025 · 03/09/2025 21:15

I think they're fine for year seven! I've always bought my children Startrite, as they're fabulous shoes! My eldest son has just started year seven too, and I got him Kickers, but it's only because he now chooses to walk there, and not have a lift off me. So we wanted something comfortable! My eldest daughter had Startrite year seven and eight, then I moved onto something a bit older. She's an August baby too, it's difficult isn't it! As long as your daughter likes them, I'd try not to worry!

Someone's got their knickers in a twist 😄

You absolutely support it by listing brands that aren't accepted at certain schools and telling her what's a safe bet.

If you didn't support this stuff, you would have replied, let your daughter wear whatever shoes she likes. But you didn't.

Edited

The OP doesn't want to be told to let her daughter wear what she likes

She wants advice on what will be fashionable, and the PP is giving it to her

Don't be such a B

Sadly that does not mean they are cool when you're 11 😁

I think the shoes are fine but I have been smiling at the posters saying ‘I’m 50 and I wear Mary Janes. It reminds me of one of my kids saying that Skechers aren’t cool and my mum indignantly replying ‘I wear Skechers’. Well quite. She’s 68.

Dramatic · 04/09/2025 10:22

They wouldn't be socially acceptable in my daughter's school, they all wear loafers. But some areas/schools they will be fine. I wouldn't worry so much to start with but I would be aware that she might want to change shoes if everyone else is wearing something different

I love them! I wear them with striped black and white socks and I'm praised on my style by the ladies in the early 20s in the office. It is a bit beetlejuice, lol, tbf but I'm a bit particular with my dress code.

Why is there so much appearance-based bullying apparently going on in many schools? 'Social suicide' for wearing some shoes?

Cringing at the fact there are middle aged women non-ironically using the phrase 'social suicide'. I can only imagine what kind of children they're raising.

OP my eldest has just gone into year 6 and was desperate for lace-up brogues, but her very slim feet meant we just couldn't find a pair that fit. We ended up with exactly the same shoes as your DD, and she was dissapointed at first, but much happier when we walked into school this morning and saw that most of the girls still had this style. Dreading school shopping for secondary September as shes going to the local Grammar who are notoriously militant about uniform. I suspect we will end up with the same shoes again.

MyBestFriendKenny · 05/09/2025 15:58

My daughter has just started year 8 and has gone back in a very similar style, but patent, complete with velcro fastening. I've just asked her and she says no-one notices shoes. My friend's daughter is going into year 11 and hers aren't vastly different either, just with a T bar. DD is almost 13 and has a very strong sense of personal style. If those shoes were 'social suicide' she would make it very clear!

Well this thread inspired me to look for some chunky maryjanes for work, these arrived today and I love them, they are also really comfortable
