To send DD to year 7 in Mary Janes

Are these shoes (below) acceptable for starting secondary school year 7?
DD has literally only just turned 11 years old a few weeks ago. She's so young still. And she loves these shoes for their comfort and she likes the style.
But will she get comments about them being babyish??
She has tried on 10 different pairs of school shoes - flat brogues, chunky brogues, chunky T bars, patent chunky T bars, DMs, boys smart trainer style school shoes and loafers.....and there has been something wrong with all of them - too stiff, too hard leather, too heavy, too narrow at the toes, rubbing at heels or rubbing below ankles, too uncomfortable....every pair, all 10 pairs. And these are all from retailers such as Clarks, Startrite, Next, M&S, DM, Schuh.
Then she put these on and they fit like a glove. They are soft, supportive, instantly ultra comfortable......she said "Ah mummy, these are perfect!".
BUT, she's also desperate to fit in with the other girls at her new secondary school and also doesn't want to be seen to be babyish in her style.
Who knew buying secondary school shoes was such a minefield!
Are these OK, or too young for year 7?
I hate even asking this question! If she'd been born a few weeks later she'd have been starting year 6 next week, not year 7, and I wouldn't even be questioning shoe style!

They are fine for Yr 7 yes. Mary Jane's are popular if trainers arent allowed.

HollyGolightly4 · 29/08/2025 22:24

High school teacher, absolutely fine. I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid for y7.

YorkshireFelix · 29/08/2025 22:26

My dd is going into Y7 and has also chosen Mary Jane’s. They are slightly chunkier than the ones you’ve linked (Geox ‘Casey’ but the non-patent ones) but I think they are fine! She really didn’t like any of the loafer or ballet flat style shoes either.

SquirrelRed · 29/08/2025 22:27

My daughter had almost exactly the same shoes. We also went through trying several different pairs with the same problems as you.
Mine is going into year 8 now and we have been to buy shoes today and she has chosen the same pair again, so she can't have had any problems or negative comments from anyone

Nineandahalf · 29/08/2025 22:27

The chunkier ones are a bit cooler, or the T bar
But honestly for year 7 it's fine. They're still only little.

fashionqueen0123 · 29/08/2025 22:29

I saw someone else ask this on Facebook and the consensus was it’s fine.
My daughter has chosen Nike court boroughs which is a massive relief as they are comfy and only £30 in a sale!

PaisleyCarpet · 29/08/2025 22:39

They'll be fine. Plain and non remarkable - it's not like they've got the little heart and butterfly leather patches. That sort would be a bit much for this age, but these are fine.

Yes the Nike boroughs look so comfy and my DD would love to wear them for their comfort . But the school have explicitly emailed parents to state no sportsbrand logos on school shoes, even if they logo is in black against a black shoe!

Fine. My Daughter just going into year 8 and had similar last year and has picked same again this year.

scissy · 29/08/2025 23:14

They'll be fine. My DD wore similar for the whole of last year and has picked a similar style (but buckle instead of velcro) for Y8. And she's VERY particular 😆.
I feel your pain...

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/08/2025 23:16

I think they’re fine! Totally inoffensive shoes. If she finds them comfortable then I’d let her go in them.

My dd hasn’t been budged from boys lace up shoes throughout secondary school (she’s just going into sixth form). They’re not glamorous in the slightest but I don’t think anyone has ever been bothered by them or commented.

hannonle · 29/08/2025 23:19

My niece has that exact pair and she's starting in year 7 this year too.
When my sister showed me the link to them, I thought they were very good. Nice and plain with nothing decorative to get teased over.

Edit - she's also the opposite in age and will be 12 within days of starting back.

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/08/2025 23:20

DD is going into Yr10 and hers are similar. Her view is they are comfy... and no 9ne actually cares. They have black socks, mo one looks at their feet

LMJ92 · 29/08/2025 23:21

girls shoes are much more easier to “fit in” because most wear the dolly type of shoe anyway so she will be okay!

my daughter picked mini Melissa’s because that’s what “everyone else” is wearing 🙄
its such hard work isn’t it 😂

Lindy2 · 29/08/2025 23:23

My DD is going into year 10 and has a similar but chunkier version of this style. Hers have proper buckles rather than velcro fastenings though. She wouldn't wear velcro straps now but it's fine for year 7.

MsSmartShoes · 29/08/2025 23:26

She’ll be begging for black Nike leather trainers within weeks.

chaosmaker · 29/08/2025 23:35

@JulyBlue I would wear them at 53 so don't understand the problem. They are very comfy.

jettisoned · 29/08/2025 23:38

Ours aren't allowed Velcro (or air force 1) so most go for brogues.

BengalBangle · 29/08/2025 23:42

At that age, she's more likely to be picked on for still calling you Mummy!
The shoes are pretty young for that age, but if she likes them, then go for it!

Clompette · 29/08/2025 23:44

She'd be ok at our school. Have her practice how to respond if anyone pokes fun at something she wears or says in general. Don't make it specific to the shoes.

@chaosmaker there are all sorts of things a 53 year old might wear that an 11 year old might consider not socially acceptable! Most of my wardrobe for a start.

Where do you live OP? Here that would be social sucide in Y7 but if you have a kinder cohort than my daugher did then I think they are lovely shoes ( and the ones my DD had in Y5 but she has big feet).

chaosmaker · 29/08/2025 23:35

That is exactly the problem

Jemimapuddleduk · 29/08/2025 23:53

My daughter had similar but patent for year 7 and they were absolutely fine.

LighthouseTeaCup · 29/08/2025 23:58

The shoes are fine, but her calling you "mummy" probably won't be

ItsHellOrHighwater · 30/08/2025 00:03

It’ll be very much area dependent OP as to what is ‘acceptable’. It’s bloody horrible for kids and such a culture shock going into year 7 for so many kids. 😢 Do you know any kids that already go to the school that you can ask?

I hate to say it but they wouldn’t be seen as ‘fitting in’ at my children’s school. The only Mary Jane style that was ‘acceptable’ were Dr Martens, yet Dr Martens were not ‘acceptable’ at my friends child’s school. Brogues are ‘acceptable’ at my children’s school, friends school and my nieces school so they’re a reasonably safe bet I think. I know your daughter hasnt found any of those that she likes though.

I don’t think anyone can say for definite as it really is area/school dependent. It’s shit OP. Maybe your daughter just won’t care anyway, which is the best way to be. If she really hates them, will you be able to buy different ones a few weeks in?
