Willies on the beach

Today it was a group of mum friends and kids on the beach. My DS age 5 took off his shorts and underwear to put on his swim shorts and was (as usual) in no particular rush, and a mum friend said “ooh Billy put on your shorts quickly”. I didn’t think much of it.

Later, at home time, her own son who is 10 was changing and got distracted so was talking to the other kids whilst naked. She said rather sternly something along the lines of “Tommy no, you’re a big boy, you can’t be doing that, you need to get your pants on”.
I hadn’t thought anything of it but she clearly had an issue.

My DS 5 is my eldest, so this is a new territory for me, and I was wondering at what age it becomes ‘wrong’ (inappropriate?) for being nudey on the beach? I thought it was fine and innocent today and she was being a bit weird, but thinking about it I suppose there must be cut off point or we’d have all the blokes peacocking around with their peacocks out.

I’ll do a poll but I’m more curious than opinionated about the matter.

YABU - a ten year old should not have his bits out and should change quickly
YANBU - it’s all fine, he’s a kid and didn’t have it out all day

There are people who will very carefully try to push the norms and acceptance, it's the one area nobody normal has ever shifted on though even an inch, thank God. It's the one place that they always fall down - normal people are revolted by horrified by and loathe paedos and all things paedo adjacent.

You sometimes see very careful test the waters comments, the poor child molesters aren't doing any harm if they are just thinking it, right? Next step is claiming they just can't help it, poor things. Next thing you know they're pals with Peter Tatchell and writing letters to the Guardian claiming that not all child abuse is "unwanted, abusive or harmful"

You will see the same sort of people trying to claim that there's a difference between a paedo who acts on it and a paedo who doesn't (or pretends not to), the ACKSHUALLY bunch.

Anyone who ever even remotely tries to defend, normalise, downplay paedos or anything paedo related is flying more red flags than the Tooting Popular Front.

Of course, I'm not saying that commenter is one of those. I mean, I'm sure THEY have a very good reason for this weird comment. Right?

And that’s why we immediately push back. Maybe this poster is a bit thick. Itll be very easy for pedos to manipulate her.

Ew, this weird and unnecessary thread is still up? How bizarre.

Yeah pretty disappointed with mumsnetHQ for this

I always find nudity a funny one and depends on the context. Like 5 year old, on the beach not that big of a deal. Even 10 year old getting changed amongst friends/family at home, I don't think that big of a deal because they're just getting changed. But I mean being told to cover up by your mum, if you're dawdling and chit chatting with your nob out, also not that big of a deal.

Brits are so weird about nudity. Go to many European countries and it’s not uncommon to see naked adults at swimming lakes, in saunas, changing on the beach etc.

I'm British and I also think Brits are weird about nudity. If you were nude in a shopping centre or museum, fine that's weird and inappropriate but places where you need to get changed for normal daily activities like swimming, showering etc it shouldn't be such a scary thing.

Wingingit73 · 29/08/2025 20:25

I think its just wiser to encourage a quick change because sadly you dont know who is about. Personally I think little children look a bit vulnerable naked on the beach but they probably feel fab. Do what you like and others will do same. I dont think anyone is wrong

If you don’t like the post you can report it. Oh wait you have. In that case best just leave it now eh, you’ve had your say - repeatedly - time to move on with your life.

This is fascinating.

What about at home amongst extended family (grandparents, uncles and aunts)? Is ten too old to have bits showing for example on way too and from a shower?

Yes it’s too old and in my experience by that age they’re starting to get very shy about being naked around anyone including parents.

Lyraloo · 29/08/2025 23:44

I cannot believe you’ve actually posted this! So what you are saying is you feel it’s potentially ok to expose your child to a peadophile because it makes your life a little easier getting them changed? Unbelievable…..just unbelievable 😡

Oh, totally. I never let these sorts of "maybe they're just totally thick, maybe they're putting feelers out to encourage the normalisation of paedos" things go past. Absolutely never, and not in real life either.

I'd very definitely have told the "hey let the paedos gawp at my children, what's the harm" poster what I thought, and the owner of the thread would have been told "Don't be bloody stupid, of course we don't encourage 10 year old boys to stand around naked in public when it is completely unnecessary, and don't pretend it's got a single thing to do with being prudish".

And all of my comments that this post was strange were deleted by admins and I was given a warning. We all know what this post was and what it was trying to achieve.
