Cat jumped on baby! GP?

MagicMule · 26/08/2025 11:06

In the middle of a nappy change about half an hour ago and 6kg hulk of a cat bounded through, jumping over but also part on my 8-week-old baby. Baby had a few scratch marks (no broken skin, and they've pretty much faded) and cried for about 30 seconds then fell asleep again, has been a little grumpy since but nothing unusual.

Do I need to take baby to the GP? My husband thinks I'm being an anxious PFB mother and I quite possibly am, but we thought you wise people might know best!

I’d be rehoming the cat tbh. A pet scratching and jumping on a baby is not ok.

For gods sake !

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne- is the white one deaf? Often pure while cats are deaf … genetics and gene placements

I have a white cat come let itself in regularly as a visitor, my 2 black girls are not fans 😂
it also has one green and one blue eye
it is deaf

SummerFrog25 · 27/08/2025 01:01

What a gorgeous cat!! Umm. I mean what a ferral beast that should NOTbe allowed anywhere near your PFB.

l'll remove the dangerous creature from you

Just occurred to me, awfully late. Be sure to keep his🐾 claws trimmed carefully, for your own peace of mind. Better for him too of course.
The damn things regrow, and needle-sharp too, shockingly fast. But after a calm trimming session, they are blunt and comparatively risk free.

Exactly. I can just imagine how little Tennyson would react if I came near him with trimmers.

Yes, I grasp your point!
First, I ought to have been clear that this’d be only re an indoor cat’s claws of course, where max sharpness isn’t needed for self defence.

But honestly, my two 🐾 look on trims as part of an affectionate grooming session and accept it very calmly. Naturally, you gotta do it right!
It’s merely the very tippiest tip you blunt, scarcely anything at all, so she still can scratch herself but without lacerating her royal flesh.
Crucially, the cat will not feel a thing when you trim her.

I picked up the very best way to do it from a Maru video on YouTube. (You know, that famous Japanese cat who is amusingly addicted to boxes and containers)
It’s worth using proper cat clippers rather than your own nail clippers as they are so simple and blunt, as though made for a baby. No possibility of a click to alarm a nervous victim client!

I trim my cats claws too, if I don’t they grow too long and it seems to distress them, lots of frantic clawing at carpets and scratch posts. They don’t mind it, we do the trim then a good brush, they enjoy the attention and purr loudly throughout.

He's pretty affectionate and friendly but has a short attention span. Tolkien is the cuddle monster.

Amivei · 27/08/2025 11:38

@MagicMule I used to worry excessively about things like this. One thing someone said to me was there’s so much force when a baby is squeezed through a vaginal birth, that something like a cat wouldn’t even compare. That said, obviously always go to the GP to be on the safe side if baby seems a bit off or not themselves. If they’re eating and have wet nappies and crying as usual with no temp, then it’s usually all good!

“Short attention span” 😂😂😂 adhd perhaps ? 😆

Tolkien gorgeous too!! Looks exactly the same as neighbour’s cat! Comes daily and demands a specific brand cat food, hisses at me if he gets something different 🙄

Phoenixfire1988 · 26/08/2025 22:48

I'd be putting that cat on diet STAT its extremely overweight which really is not good for his health youre killing him with kindness . Allowing a cat to get so obese its neglect just as much as starving a cat ( i say that as kindly as possible )

Edited

Before fat shaming the poor boy at least read up about Siberians! They are larger than average and males can weigh up to 9kg. It sounds as though he's perfectly formed!

FurForksSake · 27/08/2025 13:03

So now we have neurodiverse, obese cats? Do you also use a penis beaker to freshen up the feline while brushing teeth and trimming claws?

Little Tennyson is just naughty 😁

Tolkien is generally horrified by his behaviour. Tolkien is nearly 6kg and little Tennyson is 3.4kg of willfulness and homicidal intent. Both go outdoors but seldom far from their own garden. They sharpen their claws out there and on the scratching post though Tennyson occasionally rests his paws on the sofa to remind me of what he could do if he felt inclined. I don't think either of them would care for having their claws clipped though I'm sure some cats are OK with it.

Whyamiherenow · 27/08/2025 18:00

I was completely paranoid about my cat when I had our DS. Another huge cat. However he was my best friend when breast feeding. Literally sat on DS and I. The whole time. They are lovely.

Thanks all - glad to see I'm just being neurotic! (I think I was worried about internal injuries...) Cat also thanks you for getting him out of the dog house 😅

Missing the point of the thread slightly, but, oh my word, what an absolutely beautiful cat.

Nope. Non event. Beautiful cat! My my those eyes…

J3001 · 27/08/2025 18:50

I lived at home when i had my first baby there was a stray cat that hung around years invited itself in he used to lie curled up at the corner of my sons blanket and playmat and moses basket never once touched him but always lay there for hours till he went out side for the night he never stayed in but was always back the next morning

He’d set about writing ‘In Memoriam: Part the Second’, all about your sad demise 😹

HostaCentral · 26/08/2025 12:14

Ffs

Why would you rehome the cat? I had three children and incidentally three cats, Siamese in point of fact, very vocal, self opinionated and considered the house theirs, which it was, personally, I think your cat didn't realise the baby was there, cats are always looking to settle somewhere warm and cosy, tbh you do need to check it hasnt got into the pram, cot etc.
We had cats all the time the children were growing up and they are all three as adults, cat people. Enjoy your newborn, keep your cat, handsome looking too, good luck all will be well

PigletSanders · 27/08/2025 19:54

If you were worried about ‘internal injuries’, a GP is the last place to take them. They’d be bob useless.
