Cat jumped on baby! GP?

MagicMule · 26/08/2025 11:06

In the middle of a nappy change about half an hour ago and 6kg hulk of a cat bounded through, jumping over but also part on my 8-week-old baby. Baby had a few scratch marks (no broken skin, and they've pretty much faded) and cried for about 30 seconds then fell asleep again, has been a little grumpy since but nothing unusual.

Do I need to take baby to the GP? My husband thinks I'm being an anxious PFB mother and I quite possibly am, but we thought you wise people might know best!

Absolutely. I’m a cat lady too (yea and Lo! even unto the wild grey hair and distracted demeanour)
OP need freak out only if the infant is actually bitten, which is extremely unlikely.
(Someone once explained to me the ingenious way in which a cat’s gnashers do their damage in a fight with, say, a rat, but it was so damn clever I’ve completely forgotten it!)

Thank you! Actually the more I think about it, it WAS a bite that I was not particularly concerned about but someone told me it looked a bit red and to get some 'special ointment'. Which I did. Personally I only really care if I was bitten by a bat or something, I'm so used to cats I probably have some of their DNA. Anyone who told me to part with my cats because of the arrival of a child would be out on their ear faster than you can say...well, ear.

Thanks all - glad to see I'm just being neurotic! (I think I was worried about internal injuries...) Cat also thanks you for getting him out of the dog house 😅

Edited

I'm not even that much of a cat person but this lad is ADORABLE!

I’d be rehoming the cat tbh. A pet scratching and jumping on a baby is not ok.

🙄

I really think this is very unlikely unless an HV already had concerns about OP which, again, is really very unlikely!

there are some weirdos out there on that particular field ….

I would be calling social services tbh. Cats should not be given the chance to jump on and scratch young babies.

Calling social services on who ? The cat ? Bizarre.

BrentfordForever · 26/08/2025 11:13

I personally would , if anything to put it down as the cat did it - just in case a weirdo HV thinks you did it

And this is why people can’t get GP appointments

Charminggoldfinch · 26/08/2025 14:47

If it helps OP the cats protection has lots of advice online about how to manage interactions between cats and a babies and lots of handy tips 🐈‍⬛ your cat is gorgeous!

Beautiful cat! Baby should be fine, OP!

This is what we did. Sad, but baby comes first.

Please do not ever get another pet, to rehome after a non event is awful.

Yet another MASSIVE overreaction! It’s a cat…it has no comprehension of ‘please don’t jump over the baby Felix darling!’

We are not talking about an out of control pit bull here ffs! 🤦‍♀️

Well this is odd.

I tested it. One AI testing site said it was real but three said it was 90+% AI (one said 96%, the other said 91%, third said 94%). Maybe OP’s just done some photo manipulation and put a beauty filter on the cat?? 😂 I’m trying to imagine what bizarre situation you start a thread like this and post an AI cat (if it is one).

Cat is very much real, I promise! He's a Siberian who enjoys cuddles, treats, and a growing waistline. Bonus picture of cat on his kitty chaise longue, wondering if he's about to be put on a diet.

Weirdos about what?

FurForksSake · 26/08/2025 15:10

The indignity of the leg sticking out of the basket 😆😆😆😆

I’m calling the rspca, screw social services.

Did you make sure the poor darling was clean after the interaction? Babies can be so filthy and mid-nappy change the poor thing could have been exposed to god knows what.

Please take this here Nobel Prize for commenting. 🤣😹👏🏼

If that is the worst thing that happens when your baby is under 5 years old you will celebrate. Bumps, falls, scratches, cuts and bruises are all part of life. Just relax and enjoy your baby.

CommanderVim · 26/08/2025 15:19

Look at that cat's face. He gives no fucks 😂

Beautiful cat OP. Baby will be fine. My cats a biter - but we're all still here!

He’s an Adonis, figurewise, compared to my younger cat.
She’s both small and huge, insofar as her tum is a perfect medicine ball with a leg at each corner, and a delicate little cat head. He mother, who is 100 years old in cat years, has no extra weight at all, though they eat the same foods. If I try starving one, the other will dematerialise!

You boy is magnificent.

How could you possibly tell?😂

Is the cat OK? 😁. Seriously, you clearly adore both your baby and the cat, and want the best for both of them. Glad baby settled quickly afterwards.

I’m so relieved to read such an opinion, as I’m also convinced my immune system must be ruddy titanium-strong by now, my having lived with cats for so long.
I sleep with my two elderly gals next to me now I’m in my twilight years, not wanting to be without their company (and one of them can’t really be long for this world, at her great age 😿)
I know I horrify my flinching brother and his wife, who whenever they visit virtually have speech bubbles hovering over them saying “Should we don hazmat suits?” Damn cheek! 🤣😹😹

Look at that sweet, innocent face! He didn't do it.

Joking aside, your baby will be just fine. Don't worry, love.
