Cat jumped on baby! GP?

MagicMule · 26/08/2025 11:06

In the middle of a nappy change about half an hour ago and 6kg hulk of a cat bounded through, jumping over but also part on my 8-week-old baby. Baby had a few scratch marks (no broken skin, and they've pretty much faded) and cried for about 30 seconds then fell asleep again, has been a little grumpy since but nothing unusual.

Do I need to take baby to the GP? My husband thinks I'm being an anxious PFB mother and I quite possibly am, but we thought you wise people might know best!

Thanks all - glad to see I'm just being neurotic! (I think I was worried about internal injuries...) Cat also thanks you for getting him out of the dog house 😅

Edited

That cat is innocent.

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne- is the white one deaf? Often pure while cats are deaf … genetics and gene placements

louderthan · 26/08/2025 19:57

What a beautiful cat! (Beside the point sorry 😂)
but I really don’t think you need to see the dr.

No, he isn't.
Other people have asked me that, but he can hear all right.

@MagicMule what until baby is a toddler and you find them on all fours at the cat bowl and you’re googling whether cat food is dangerous if consumed by child. Or you catch them letting the cat have a lick of the butter off their crackers. I’m not a honestly not a neglectful parent, just didn’t anticipate the child doing things which are so disgusting 😂

A friend went into the kitchen to find toddler daughter eating the cat food with a spoon, and with the cat clamped firmly under the other arm.
This child also used to bring snails in and put them round the edge of her bowl so they could share her breakfast cereal.

For goodness sake. She can just ensure it isn't in the room.

The cat used to sleep in the pram with me. I should add I'm a child of the 70s and things were probably a little more lax then!

I was hospitalised with cat scratch fever when I was four or so; it's definitely a thing, but if your baby has just incurred a few superficial scratches with no broken skin, it's unlikely to be a problem. Keep an eye on the site and if you see redness or swelling, get advice. Cat bites can be very dangerous, but scratches rarely, which is a good thing given how often we cat people get them. For the first couple of months after getting our ginger tom kitten, my right leg was a mass of scratches. The crampons went in and up he climbed. I just kept wiping the scratches and eventually he realised I wasn't an activity centre. 😸

As to being jumped on by 6kg of Siberian, your LO probably had a shock! As ever, keep an eye out, but with such a young baby, you're doing that anyway.

As others have said, what a lovely cat. That sweet face and those beautiful eyes😻😻😻

elliegirl · 26/08/2025 21:28

Don't worry. Your baby will be fine! No need for the GP. Your cat on the otherhand might need to go to the vet as it appears to be suffering from a major case of feline cuteness!

I’d be rehoming the cat tbh. A pet scratching and jumping on a baby is not ok.

Oh behaved. So dramatic.

no doubt scratched as getting traction to move and totally unintentional to harm the baby.

Talkingdonut · 26/08/2025 21:40

Absolutely not 🤦

My youngest is a coeliac. Cat food has gluten in it*. I found this out the hard way.
I also stopped sterilising everything that they came into contact with (ex-nicu baby so not totally psb) the day I caught them licking the cat.

Said arsehole cat and the youngest are now inseparable. Arsehole cat regards the youngest's bed as her personal cat bed. Shes especially fond of you gest's pillow.

Your baby will be absolutely fine. Give it a year and the cat and baby will probably be besties

*gluten free cat food is available!

I love seeing the bonds which develop between pets & young children. One of my favourite ever threads here, the op very reluctantly adopted the soggy kitten in her garden before falling (of course) very hard...Her young daughter adored the kitten treating it like a doll and could get away with murder with it.

Rehome it? Are you joking 🙃 🤣

Millytante · 26/08/2025 22:18

Just occurred to me, awfully late. Be sure to keep his🐾 claws trimmed carefully, for your own peace of mind. Better for him too of course.
The damn things regrow, and needle-sharp too, shockingly fast. But after a calm trimming session, they are blunt and comparatively risk free.

I think it's the cat that needs to visit the GP (vet)! 6Kg is rather large for a domestic cat and the photo, albeit extremely cute, appears to suggest it's a bit of overweight.

A bit rude I know but hopefully the cat doesn't read MN. *Prepares for inbound flaming.

I think the cat needs counselling more than a GP. It's a clear case of sibling resentment. He's probably gearing up to sit on baby in order to smother - or plans to just eat the baby.

FurForksSake · 26/08/2025 22:43

The poor cat is just big furred, it’s so hard for our long haired felines they are so misunderstood. That’s at least 3kg of fur and it’s acting like a weighted vest to keep his bones strong and build muscle. He’s a hench little fur baby and was even doing his gymnastics this morning when he was rudely interrupted and then body shamed.

Cat is very much real, I promise! He's a Siberian who enjoys cuddles, treats, and a growing waistline. Bonus picture of cat on his kitty chaise longue, wondering if he's about to be put on a diet.

I'd be putting that cat on diet STAT its extremely overweight which really is not good for his health youre killing him with kindness . Allowing a cat to get so obese its neglect just as much as starving a cat ( i say that as kindly as possible )

HostaCentral · 26/08/2025 22:57

Arthur is a Bengal cross. He's skin and bone and muscle, he's over 5Kgs. Some cats are just BIG.

hellohellooo · 26/08/2025 22:57

Beautiful cat

OP totally normally to panic
We all do when they are this small

That kitty is an absolute stunner! Love the floofy tum & proof of 100% real awesomeness! Please do keep us all updated on the adventures of your baby & cat as they progress together in companionship & mischief!

Well this is odd.

I tested it. One AI testing site said it was real but three said it was 90+% AI (one said 96%, the other said 91%, third said 94%). Maybe OP’s just done some photo manipulation and put a beauty filter on the cat?? 😂 I’m trying to imagine what bizarre situation you start a thread like this and post an AI cat (if it is one).

Wow weird! If it’s real it defo should have been an advert cat.

mummybear35 · 26/08/2025 23:35

My 7kg cat used the top my baby’s head as a stepping stone on his way to the back of sofa 🤭 baby was more shocked then hurt!

My health visitor observed DS1 going straight for the cat food before I could stop him and she just shrugged and said "Well at least it's nutritionally complete!"

I say, that’s a bit much. He’s voluptuous at most (in a very manly way, that is)
