Cat jumped on baby! GP?

MagicMule · 26/08/2025 11:06

In the middle of a nappy change about half an hour ago and 6kg hulk of a cat bounded through, jumping over but also part on my 8-week-old baby. Baby had a few scratch marks (no broken skin, and they've pretty much faded) and cried for about 30 seconds then fell asleep again, has been a little grumpy since but nothing unusual.

Do I need to take baby to the GP? My husband thinks I'm being an anxious PFB mother and I quite possibly am, but we thought you wise people might know best!

Cat is very much real, I promise! He's a Siberian who enjoys cuddles, treats, and a growing waistline. Bonus picture of cat on his kitty chaise longue, wondering if he's about to be put on a diet.

OP, thank you! This is actually incredibly helpful because now I know some of those sites are complete shite. For anyone wondering, I used SightEngine and UndetectibleAI. It was “wasitai” that reported the image was real, so maybe their site is a little better?

Frostynoman · 26/08/2025 15:54

Absolutely happy to look after cat until the baby comes of age..

If that is the worst thing that happens when your baby is under 5 years old you will celebrate. Bumps, falls, scratches, cuts and bruises are all part of life. Just relax and enjoy your baby.

Absolutely right. Cats, cats inside in the cot with an infant to comfort thrm, are nothing compared to the slings and arrows beyond the back door.
(Such as turps carelessly stored in a glass lemonade bottle in the neighbours’ garden, which someone gave her little baby brother to drink for a dolls’ tea party. Thank God he was too young even to think of suspecting fratricidal intent…😬. Ma gave me a funny look, though)

Mind you, those aliens would say it was all legit, wouldn’t they?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/08/2025 15:59

I can't believe that someone has suggested your cat is an AI creation.
I've enclosed 2 pictures of a fluffy grey cat on a kitchen table - one is obviously AI nonsense, the other is the real thing. Tested on a few AI detectors and none were conclusive.
I can only assume that free AI detectors are shite at recognising either fake or real cats 😻

No but defo ring 111 if a gust of wind goes past the baby

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/08/2025 16:01

And OP - I never doubted for one moment that your cat was anything but a real cat 🐈

Alltheyellowbirds · 26/08/2025 13:45

What the actual fuck?

Are you saying your family diary/daily planner doesn’t have a regular time blocked out so that the cat may be given his opportunity to leap on and scratch a child?
Sometimes he’ll need a bit of encouragement, especially if there’s an interesting item on the news, but trailing catnip Dreamies up the stairs will get him up and at it.
😹🤣

chunkybear · 26/08/2025 16:05

No, and HV have seen cat scratches before, my first got a whack around the face just before the HV came and she just said oh I’ve got cats too, they were always batting our kids when they pulled at them
if you’re worried about scratches just bathe in warm salt water and put sacking on but I’m sure they’re fine

FurForksSake · 26/08/2025 16:11

When my son was a baby he struggled with several afflictions (asthma, eczema, cmpa etc) and his paediatrician suggested we get a dog to expose him to more allergens and apparently improve his immune system or some such (this was 10 years ago, I’m not an allergy specialist or an immunologist). Anyway, I explained we had a huge cat with very long hair, the size of a small dog. I enquired if this was good enough and told it was not

Anyway, we discussed it with the cat and he chose to self-identify as a dog and all was well. His selfless choice meant my son’s afflictions indeed did go and we never did get a cis dog.

Fat shaming a cat. Peak Mumsnet. We've lost sight of what a normal cat looks like Grin

Wasn’t there a thread recently demonstrating your final sentence?
A spate of random people carting away perfectly healthy house cats out for a quick recce of the manor, because the human decided such a ‘thin’ cat must of course be homeless and needing rescue.
In that example, it was the online ‘normalisation of obesity’ in beauty standards being blamed though.

Poor cats. God’s most perfect achievement and even they are held up for cruel scrutiny and areas to improve 😹

They are both very splendid ones.

This is what we did. Sad, but baby comes first.

Unless your cat was a savage monster that was completely unnecessary and really cruel. Sad for your child too, who could have grown up with a fluffy friend and learned about caring for animals.

Hopefully the cat ended up with someone who actually loved it.

CinammonSquirrels · 26/08/2025 16:45

It's normal to worry about stuff like that with your newborn and hope you have been reassured that your baby will be absolutely fine. I remember similar panics many moons ago. PS Your cat is totally gorgeous (and I'm a dog person).

ThatCleverCoralCrow · 26/08/2025 16:52

Omg gorgeous cat! I'll have it 😂

Fordsierra · 26/08/2025 17:06

My youngest is a coeliac. Cat food has gluten in it*. I found this out the hard way.
I also stopped sterilising everything that they came into contact with (ex-nicu baby so not totally psb) the day I caught them licking the cat.

Said arsehole cat and the youngest are now inseparable. Arsehole cat regards the youngest's bed as her personal cat bed. Shes especially fond of you gest's pillow.

Your baby will be absolutely fine. Give it a year and the cat and baby will probably be besties

*gluten free cat food is available!

BernardButlersBra · 26/08/2025 17:07

To do what?!

Cute cat 💕

CopperWhite · 26/08/2025 11:21

I’d be rehoming the cat tbh. A pet scratching and jumping on a baby is not ok.

For goodness sake. She can just ensure it isn't in the room.

He’s absolutely gorgeous!💙 look at his face!😍 and his little expressive mouth!

I would give up Prosecco forever to have him!

This is a bit neurotic. Did you read the op? That’s a very extreme solution based on the actual event. Please don’t ever get a cat.

She hates cats if I remember correctly.

Millytante · 26/08/2025 19:21

Disintegration1985 · 26/08/2025 14:04

Me scrolling through the thread: Ah, lovely - posters gently steering OP without berating, shaming or judging.
Gets to the cat fat-shaming Oh ffs.

I’d not object to mincing around public parks cat-shaming negligent dog wranglers, I must say.
Waving a fist and reciting in their phizzogs, along the lines of ‘Oi! Shoulda gotta moggie, mate!’
😹🤣

That envelope has been doctored. I can't say if it's been done manually or digitally, but NO envelopes come with "100% real cat" written on them.

Sus.
