Cat jumped on baby! GP?

MagicMule · 26/08/2025 11:06

In the middle of a nappy change about half an hour ago and 6kg hulk of a cat bounded through, jumping over but also part on my 8-week-old baby. Baby had a few scratch marks (no broken skin, and they've pretty much faded) and cried for about 30 seconds then fell asleep again, has been a little grumpy since but nothing unusual.

Do I need to take baby to the GP? My husband thinks I'm being an anxious PFB mother and I quite possibly am, but we thought you wise people might know best!

I would be calling social services tbh. Cats should not be given the chance to jump on and scratch young babies.

What the actual fuck?

oopsied · 26/08/2025 13:36

I think it's the cat that needs to visit the GP (vet)! 6Kg is rather large for a domestic cat and the photo, albeit extremely cute, appears to suggest it's a bit of overweight.

A bit rude I know but hopefully the cat doesn't read MN. *Prepares for inbound flaming.

Maybe it’s one of those super-longhaired types, consisting of 95% silken tresses, 5% cat .
When wet, which Heaven forfend of course, these cats can be pulled through a gold wedding ring like a silk scarf, such is their true sveltitude.

Haha I love this! The imagery is beautiful.

Cat lady here! I think all will be ok, understand why you'd be anxious around a tiny baby. Just keep an eye on the scratches. There is a huge difference between what you describe (a landing!) and a deep scratch. I've had many's a deep scratch and it doesn't bother me but one in particular took a while to heal and I needed cream to stop infection. Cats are remarkably clean animals, and I think in this instance, your wee baby will be ok. Of course if you are concerned a quick check up wouldn't hurt, but really given my experience around these animals, it doesn't sound like you have to worry x

I’d be rehoming the cat tbh. A pet scratching and jumping on a baby is not ok.

My mother told us we would have to get rid of the cat when number 1 was on the way, we told her the cat would have to learn to live with it and he'd lived with us much longer! It was a matter of being careful though once she started moving she liked to sit by his bowl and watch him eat.

My 2nd DS liked to share the DCats food..

it’s got some nutritional value surely?

I’m hoping that PP was tongue in cheek saying that? But maybe not?

I'd do time for people who give their cats away once a baby arrives. It's the no 1 thing on my hitlist. Along with Camilla 😅

Rehome the baby!
That cat is divine! 😍

And has presumably lived with OP longer, why should s/he have to accept a newcomer who is taking all the attention?

Squishymallows · 26/08/2025 13:58

No

Me scrolling through the thread: Ah, lovely - posters gently steering OP without berating, shaming or judging.
Gets to the cat fat-shaming Oh ffs.

Chickenbone123 · 26/08/2025 12:22

So spectacular I was wondering whether that’s a real cat or an AI cat

Well this is odd.

I tested it. One AI testing site said it was real but three said it was 90+% AI (one said 96%, the other said 91%, third said 94%). Maybe OP’s just done some photo manipulation and put a beauty filter on the cat?? 😂 I’m trying to imagine what bizarre situation you start a thread like this and post an AI cat (if it is one).

Thanks all - glad to see I'm just being neurotic! (I think I was worried about internal injuries...) Cat also thanks you for getting him out of the dog house 😅

Oh my gosh, what a cutie !

TheAlertCrow · 26/08/2025 14:09

When my daughter was a toddler, my cat was having a funny 5 minutes and tearing up and down the stairs, ran into her bedroom and used her face as a springboard to jump onto the window, she’s 15 now and still has a very fine scar under her nose! Cat lived to the grand old age of 18 and died earlier this year, they were best of friends despite the scar ❤️

Nosleepforthismum · 26/08/2025 11:35

I think lots of MN posters would take him after that photo if the OP listens to your nonsense. What a gorgeous boy!

Indeed. He's a stunner! (A stunner that should definitely stay where he is)

Meandmyguy · 26/08/2025 14:11

Op, your cat is gorgeous!

What is their name?

axolotlfloof · 26/08/2025 14:13

Babies are robust, thankfully.
My DS1 aged 2 shouted 'look' to show me he could put the wheel of his trike on baby DS2's head.
DS2 just picked up good gcse results, so no lasting damage.
Love the cat.

Princess/Duke ‘Don’t Approach Me With Any Of That Pronoun Nonsense’ ? 😹🤣

eta: actually, my usual practice is to regard all cats as female (just as all dogs are male) until advised otherwise. I guess that is a gas-fired version of pronoun awareness after all!

That’s a very pretty cat.

I had to keep my cat and baby separated as my cat hated my baby’s cries. She once warning bit my baby’s head. Basically showed me what she could do - but didn’t connect with any skin. It was a threat. After that I kept them separated.

Fat shaming a cat. Peak Mumsnet. We've lost sight of what a normal cat looks like Grin

Absolutely. I’m a cat lady too (yea and Lo! even unto the wild grey hair and distracted demeanour)
OP need freak out only if the infant is actually bitten, which is extremely unlikely.
(Someone once explained to me the ingenious way in which a cat’s gnashers do their damage in a fight with, say, a rat, but it was so damn clever I’ve completely forgotten it!)

teksquad · 26/08/2025 14:27

Cute cat! That is the face of a cat that knows its in the doghouse....

Obviously you know to make sure cat can't get to changing table anymore but your baby will be fine, if they are hurt or unwell, you will be able to tell. We dropped eldest at this stage when trying to use a sling for first time and DH didnt have the bottom done up properly and he shot straight through! He's at university now ... This is normal PFB and gets easier as he gets bigger, dont worry!

I have 4 children that have survived to teens/young adult with an ahem, big boned cat, and the bond they have with her has been worth the odd mishap - mainly involving 'inappropriate toileting' as the vet calls it in their bedrooms to punish us for leaving her in the cattery to go on holiday. They all have got so much out of having a cat, it's lovely to see.
