To ask if you’d judge someone if they ate breakfast on the bus?

I’m obviously not talking a huge meal, or anything like that.

Im starting a new job next week and it means I lose a good hour in the morning. Im not going to have time to do the type of breakfast I do now (scrambled eggs, porridge etc.), so im just planning on taking some fruit and a protein shake on the bus, at least for the first week or so until I’ve learnt the ropes in terms of the commute.

Would you judge someone for doing that?

YABU - yes it’s grotty and you should just slam the protein shake before work

YANBU - don’t really care

If it wasn't smelly or noisy it wouldn't even register!

Needmorelego · 22/08/2025 12:43

I wouldn't even notice to be honest.
As long as it's not stinky.

SaltAirAndTheRust · 22/08/2025 12:43

Definitely not stinky - a protein shake (from a bottle!) and some fruit!

People eat and drink on the bus all the time. I wouldn’t even notice!

Hellohelga · 22/08/2025 12:45

No id just think they’re busy

Campingisnexttogodliness · 22/08/2025 12:45

Thought you meant whip out a camping stove in the aisle and rustle up some sausages...
Nobody will blink at a banana and a shake...

LadyTable · 22/08/2025 12:46

I find it hard to fathom why you care what others might think about this?

Surely you don't limit your life to only doing things if you can be 'sure' complete strangers don't judge you for it?

Exhausting and such a waste of life.

I just don’t want to be a dick, basically.

Honestly OP, as a regular bus user I see a lot of shit and weird behaviour when travelling, having a bit of a fruit and a bottle drink wouldn’t even register.

Sidebeforeself · 22/08/2025 12:49

Protein shake fine but fruit a bit impractical? Banana skins, orange smells and peel etc. Unless you mean chopped up fruit in a Tupperware sort of thing? But then theres balancing it all etc. Yeah, actually thinking about it now you are annoying me!😂

Shoutinglagerlagerlager · 22/08/2025 12:50

I hate when people do this. It’s so tacky and unpleasant for other commuters. But you won’t be the only one…

PinkPhonyClub · 22/08/2025 12:51

Protein shake is fine. Fruit I think depends on what and how you are thinking of eating it. I wouldn’t be thrilled on someone crunching on a whole apple on seat next to me tbh.

BreakfastClubBlues · 22/08/2025 12:51

No one is going to bat an eyelid at someone eating a banana on the bus.

RaininSummer · 22/08/2025 12:55

Stick with shake and eat the fruit at work.

canyon2000 · 22/08/2025 12:56

Wouldn't care at all. Remember you can buy food on trains!

RimTimTagiDim · 22/08/2025 12:58

If you're not inconveniencing anybody else (e.g. through smells) then who cares if they judge?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/08/2025 12:58

I'd judge the fuck out of them if it stank.
If not, I wouldn't give a shit.

SaltAirAndTheRust · 22/08/2025 13:01

Fair enough, my commute for the last two years has been a ten minute bus journey on a route that’s mainly the school route, and I leave a lot later than the students do! im usually the only one on the bus, so had no clue if its the done thing or not!

I once saw a person eating spaghetti in tomatoes sauce from a bag, on a bus. They eat McDonald’s on the tube. They eat chips and smelly sandwiches. It’s all gross. 🤮

A drink (or protein shake), not an issue. Banana maybe problematic.

I just don’t want to be a dick, basically.

In what way does snacking on fruit and drinking a shake make anyone a dick in any shape or form?

And if there is somebody somewhere out there who has a predisposition to judging complete strangers for it, why are you interested in their verdict?

I don't know if you have DC or if you're thinking of having them but believe me if you do, you're really going to need to shake this off for their sake as well as your own.

HungreeHipp0 · 22/08/2025 13:04

I sometimes eat a cereal bar and have a travel cup full of tea on the way to work. My commute is nearly an hour. Never considered it would be annoying to anyone.

Some people seem to smoke a joint for their breakfast before getting on the bus.

DiscoBob · 22/08/2025 13:05

I don't like the smell of cooked eggs in the morning on public transport. I like eating them in a caff or at home, but when it's from someone else's food in an enclosed space, it just reminds me of flatulence.

Porridge I guess I wouldn't care. Bacon roll probably fine. Toast fine. Fruit fine.

But I wouldn't want to eat breakfast on a bus or train.

dogcatkitten · 22/08/2025 13:07

If the bus is really crowded it's a bit off if someone is eating crammed up against you, but otherwise fine. I don't think most people would even notice fruit and a shake, too busy on their phones!

Don't worry. You won't be.

5128gap · 22/08/2025 13:09

The last time I went on a bus in the morning, someone was drinking a can of stella and singing wonderwall, and the man sitting next to me asked me if I'd let Jesus into my life yet. If your breakfast is considered so odd or anti social it gets you judged on your commute, please tell me what bus you catch, and I'll relocate and change my job.
