To ask if you’d judge someone if they ate breakfast on the bus?

I’m obviously not talking a huge meal, or anything like that.

Im starting a new job next week and it means I lose a good hour in the morning. Im not going to have time to do the type of breakfast I do now (scrambled eggs, porridge etc.), so im just planning on taking some fruit and a protein shake on the bus, at least for the first week or so until I’ve learnt the ropes in terms of the commute.

Would you judge someone for doing that?

YABU - yes it’s grotty and you should just slam the protein shake before work

YANBU - don’t really care

No, finger food is fine. Sandwich would be fine, for example, but no stinky food like curry or fish.

Eating/drinking is not allowed in out local busses. I have seen entry being denied with coffee cup and I've witnessed the driver telling someone off for eating. Depends on the driver, but I wouldn't risk it around here. However, i really don't care if someone eats at a bus as long as they don't leave a mess. A full English would be a bit odd but as long as you're quiet, clean and not smelly. Dont really mind.

Our buses specifically ban alcohol and hot food. Other food and drinks are allowed.

TicklishMintDuck · 23/08/2025 12:00

💯 you can do this. If I’m running late, it’s toast in the car.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 22/08/2025 13:16

Totally depends on the type of food. A drink in a. bottle and a banana - totally fine. Something smelly or that you need cutlery for - not fine.

Bananas stink 🤢

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 23/08/2025 12:02

Fruit can be a bit smelly or a whole apple annoyingly crunchy. Grapes or blueberries would be pretty inoffensive. I don't think anyone could have a problem with a protein shake you drink through a straw or a spout.

Coffeeishot · 23/08/2025 12:04

You will be fine people will be too busy judging others for watching loud. videos on their phones to be worrying about you eating a bannana on the bus

FastnetLundyRockall · 23/08/2025 12:04

No, all food smells. Even rice cakes which people think don’t, apparently.

Coffeeishot · 23/08/2025 12:05

Bananas stink 🤢

Do they i mean they have a smell but hardly stink, unless they are over ripe.

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · 23/08/2025 12:09

All fucked up shit people do on London buses .... I wouldn't even notice.

Bruisername · 23/08/2025 12:10

Coffeeishot · 23/08/2025 12:05

Yeah they do

and people have different smell ability - things that bother me are imperceptible to DH

so it’s better to go as inoffensive as possible

Corfumanchu · 23/08/2025 12:11

The bus company in my area doesnt allow eating or drinking except water on their buses, so maybe check that out first

SadTimesInFife · 23/08/2025 12:25

In Japan, you dont speak on public transport...and it's marvellous.
In Singapore...no eating or drinking on public transport...and it's marvellous.
I wish westerners would take note and behave the same way.
So, yes, I would judge you. But i suspect you wouldn't care, really.
The best I hope for is not to be stabbed, and for the train to run.

Lollipopps · 23/08/2025 12:31

I definitely wouldn't judge that but I do judge people that eat chicken and chips on the bus like yesterday 🤢

ComeTheMoment · 23/08/2025 12:32

Thinking about whether I would have my breakfast on the bus ... if I was judged for it then so what? It would be by people I didn't know and wouldn't be likely to see again. So it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Obviously I would try not to make a mess.

Needmorelego · 23/08/2025 13:17

Many bus stations have convenience shops or stalls that sell food and drink.
Why would I be able to buy a sandwich meal deal at the bus station if eating on the bus was forbidden??

lotsofpatience · 23/08/2025 15:45

I would find that revolting. Find another way to fix this.

ilovesooty · 23/08/2025 16:05

Falseknock · 23/08/2025 11:06

You will be judged because it's not the done thing to do. Who eats on the bus you will be shunned and asked to leave immediately.

God. You're actually being serious I think 🤣

Thankfully most people aren't this uptight.

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 23/08/2025 16:08

How much time would you really save by taking the shake and fruit onto the bus vs having them at home before you leave? Hardly seems worth it to me.

Sidebeforeself · 23/08/2025 19:16

stillhiding1990 · 23/08/2025 11:11

Balancing? Surely it’s just holding the tuperware and forking cut fruit out? What is she balancing?

Well I dont know cos it hasn’t happened yet and i wont see it! But Im imagining OP has a bag, the Tupperware lid to stow somewhere, the bus moving, might not be a lot of space. Might be a juggle thats all.

Livpool · 23/08/2025 19:51

I wouldn’t care, or probably even notice

laurajayneinkent · 24/08/2025 01:04

I really wouldn't worry about it.

DiscoBeat · 24/08/2025 01:14

Sidebeforeself · 22/08/2025 12:49

Protein shake fine but fruit a bit impractical? Banana skins, orange smells and peel etc. Unless you mean chopped up fruit in a Tupperware sort of thing? But then theres balancing it all etc. Yeah, actually thinking about it now you are annoying me!😂

Citrus smells on a bus are a lot nicer than general bus smells!

InWalksBarberalla · 24/08/2025 01:19

Protein shake and fruit fine (although I hate the smell of bananas - I know that's a me thing and most people don't mind them). I was once seated next to someone who peeled and ate a couple of hard boiled eggs on the train. That was rank.

claremmm · 24/08/2025 05:21

Good luck with the new job x
