To ask if you’d judge someone if they ate breakfast on the bus?

I’m obviously not talking a huge meal, or anything like that.

Im starting a new job next week and it means I lose a good hour in the morning. Im not going to have time to do the type of breakfast I do now (scrambled eggs, porridge etc.), so im just planning on taking some fruit and a protein shake on the bus, at least for the first week or so until I’ve learnt the ropes in terms of the commute.

Would you judge someone for doing that?

YABU - yes it’s grotty and you should just slam the protein shake before work

YANBU - don’t really care

Depends what the fruit is. Eat a banana near me and I’ll be very unhappy 🤣. Oranges have a pretty strong smell as well.

Falseknock · 23/08/2025 11:06

You will be judged because it's not the done thing to do. Who eats on the bus you will be shunned and asked to leave immediately.

PollyBell · 23/08/2025 11:07

Are you allowed to eat on buses? Is there signs to say no eating?

Falseknock · 23/08/2025 11:07

Can you imagine eating on a packed bus with all those bodies around you.

Poster2233 · 23/08/2025 11:09

I couldn't cope on my train commute when I was pregnant without eating, and having a 7am work start it was sometimes a rush to eat before leaving the house. I usually made a fruit smoothie the night before and had that on the train. Sometimes a breakfast bar too. No bad reactions, that I was aware of anyway. Once it's not smelly or messy then go for it!

Bonbon249 · 23/08/2025 11:10

Wouldn't even register with me. Used to work 2 jobs and one finished late and the other started early so on those days, I used to make up 2 rolls with peanut butter, jam and banana to take with me on the bus then wash them down with Lucozade! Kept me going til lunchtime!

SirBasil · 23/08/2025 11:10

as long as it isn't smelly, and you aren't making a noise.

I used to commute on a 45 minute train journey. And a bloke started bringing his breakfast. Wheatos or something with milk. With a porcelain bowl and metal spoon.

30 minutes of SLURP - CRUNCH - SCRAPE - SLURP - CRUNCH CRUNCH - SCRAPE SCRAPE - SLURP

And i was about to lose it on about day 5 when a very nice elderly (even older than me) lady went over and told him to stop being so anti social, wasn't he ashamed to be disturbing everyone with his awful manners and she wouldn't be able to look herself in the mirror if she behaved like that.

And. We never saw him again. Just as well because if it had been me, neither of us would have been seen again.

itsachickeninnit · 23/08/2025 11:11

I’d just feel that you needed something more substantial 😂 make some overnight oats and take a spoon!

How often do you go on a bus?
Eating on the bus is an every day thing that's barely noticeable.
(I say that as someone that goes on a bus almost daily)

Protein shake fine but fruit a bit impractical? Banana skins, orange smells and peel etc. Unless you mean chopped up fruit in a Tupperware sort of thing? But then theres balancing it all etc. Yeah, actually thinking about it now you are annoying me!😂

Balancing? Surely it’s just holding the tuperware and forking cut fruit out? What is she balancing?

Sometimes there's signs saying "no hot food" but that's it.

Emmz1510 · 23/08/2025 11:13

Yep you’re fine, I wouldn’t bat an eyelid

Imisssleep2 · 23/08/2025 11:13

I think this is the way alot of people have to live now, everyone is so busy we have to save time where we can.as long as it's not stinky it really wouldn't bother me.i used to sit opposite a lady who sometimes had those John west tuna lunches for lunch and it made me want to come it smelt so bad, like cat food.

Emmz1510 · 23/08/2025 11:14

Haha you can tell some folk on here are never on buses! Of course you are allowed to eat!

I travel on coaches quite often . On them you are allowed to eat on them but no hot food such as pasties , sausage rolls , McDs etc as the smell wafts done the coach .
Protein shakes , fruit etc would be perfectly fine .

You need to learn not to give a fuck what random strangers think about you.
Other people’s opinions are irrelevant.

This !!

I hate when people do this. It’s so tacky and unpleasant for other commuters. But you won’t be the only one…

Oh my God! This- and many others like it- are insane! People moaning about the 'crunch' of an apple- really? People are so intolerant.

OP, you eat your breakfast - hell, I'd even suggest some overnight oats with, shock, horror, a spoon. DS1 eats his in an early lecture at uni , or a home-made flapjack & coffee. No-one cares, & if they did he wouldn't care as it's a non-issue.

In my 20s I used to do my make-up on the train. I had nothing but smiles!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 23/08/2025 11:34

It wouldn't bother me but I'm sure my local buses have a sign against eating or drinking on them

Rewis · 23/08/2025 11:37

Eating/drinking is not allowed in out local busses. I have seen entry being denied with coffee cup and I've witnessed the driver telling someone off for eating. Depends on the driver, but I wouldn't risk it around here. However, i really don't care if someone eats at a bus as long as they don't leave a mess. A full English would be a bit odd but as long as you're quiet, clean and not smelly. Dont really mind.

Notmyreality · 23/08/2025 11:38

Have you never been on a bus before?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/08/2025 11:48

TheCurious0range · 23/08/2025 10:52

I sometimes make banana bread for this purpose, the recipe I use doesn't contain any sugar and has a healthy dollop of nut butter, so it's a solid breakfast especially with a protein drink. Fruit alone would've be filling enough for me. You can also make them as muffins

Can you share the recipe please?

StillFeelingTired · 23/08/2025 11:50

I used to be on a 6.15 train into London. Would eat a ham salad sandwich and drink a cup of coffee every day. Is it different? It feels like it is but I’m not sure why thinking about it.

Bruisername · 23/08/2025 11:53

I wouldn’t mind but agree not if stinky - and that includes banana and oranges

my colleague seems to specialise in picking smelly foods which stink up the office - eggs, oranges and bananas being the main culprits!!

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 23/08/2025 11:56

People do WAY worse things on buses.

I would be glad you're just doing your own thing and leaving me to do mine without screaming at your kids, loudly discussing your sex life, drunkenly singing, talking to me about Jesus, holding up the bus by arguing with the driver over the fare, dropping an entire packet of crisps on the floor and leaving them there, and not stinking of BO/shit/piss/weed or all four.

Honestly, I would be thinking. Oh thank Christ, just a lady and her smoothie today.
