To ask if you’d judge someone if they ate breakfast on the bus?

I’m obviously not talking a huge meal, or anything like that.

Im starting a new job next week and it means I lose a good hour in the morning. Im not going to have time to do the type of breakfast I do now (scrambled eggs, porridge etc.), so im just planning on taking some fruit and a protein shake on the bus, at least for the first week or so until I’ve learnt the ropes in terms of the commute.

Would you judge someone for doing that?

YABU - yes it’s grotty and you should just slam the protein shake before work

YANBU - don’t really care

A breakfast bar - no problem. A bowl of porridge - I'd be wondering WTF.

StrawberrySquash · 22/08/2025 13:09

LadyTable · 22/08/2025 12:46

I find it hard to fathom why you care what others might think about this?

Surely you don't limit your life to only doing things if you can be 'sure' complete strangers don't judge you for it?

Exhausting and such a waste of life.

No, but there are some things that are generally reckoned to be anti social. OP was trying to decide if this was. If she'd asked 'Is it okay to play my phone out loud on the bus?' I wouldn't answer who cares what others think. We are part of a society and we have certain social standards that make life nicer.

OP, fine with me.

I hate when people do this. It’s so tacky and unpleasant for other commuters. But you won’t be the only one…

How is the OP's proposed breakfast tacky and unpleasant?

Yeah I’ve basically never commuted in this way, I don’t wanna be a dick to everyone at 7:30 in the morning! I know some people feel really strongly about this sort of thing!

She's asking about a banana and a shake 😳

There's no point in making up/bringing any other scenarios into it because she's not talking about those.

And you’re bringing up my hypothetical children! I didn’t ask because I’m dead scared of doing something other people judge, I’m asking to be considerate

ChaToilLeam · 22/08/2025 13:16

If it doesn't ming and you don't leave any fruit peel and other detritus behind, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 22/08/2025 13:16

Totally depends on the type of food. A drink in a. bottle and a banana - totally fine. Something smelly or that you need cutlery for - not fine.

No-one brought up hypothetical children at all if you read it properly.

Either way, you're very unlikely to be travelling on a bus full of MNetters from this thread.

So no matter what the consensus here is, you're still going to have to rely on your own judgement.

Blimey, you must find life hard if you find someone having a drink on the bus unpleasant

Surely you aren't being aerious

I was talking about the who cares what others think argument. Because I don't think it holds.

SimoneHere · 22/08/2025 13:21

Protein shake fine.

Fruit - depends on how busy the bus is and what the fruit it. Banana in a half empty bus - fine. Coring a pineapple while squashed against a strangers armpit on a packed rush hour bus - not fine.

EchoedSilence · 22/08/2025 13:22

No one will care. I often have a drink on the bus or eat a cereal bar on the way to work.

Sadly she probably is. Some people are like that.

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 22/08/2025 13:24

No. I have my lunch on the bus every work day.

Zimunya · 22/08/2025 13:24

@5128gap - that made me smile :)

The last time I went on a bus in the morning, someone was drinking a can of stella and singing wonderwall, and the man sitting next to me asked me if I'd let Jesus into my life yet. If your breakfast is considered so odd or anti social it gets you judged on your commute, please tell me what bus you catch, and I'll relocate and change my job.

😭😭😭 I’m in a small town so outside of the middle of the day in summer (tourists) and school kick out time our buses tend to be empty!

I would quite surprised if you had weetabix in a bowl and balanced it on you knee, actually impressed but you do you.

Thebigonesgetaway · 22/08/2025 13:34

Good grief, stunned at the comments that think eating a banana or an apple on th4 bus is problematic, been a while since I’ve been on a bus, but who knew there was there was such high level of etiquette on there, 😂

Planktonplank · 22/08/2025 13:37

Full fry up - no
Cereal bar, fruit, shake, tea, coffee - all fine

I used to get a bus that dropped off by a couple of high schools, a packet of crisps and a can of Monster seemed like a popular breakfast for the young people.

lottiegarbanzo · 22/08/2025 13:42

Buses here have ‘no eating or drinking’ signs. I think the main reason is risk of throwing drinks over yourself and others in a case of sudden braking, tight corner, or if you don’t get a seat so are having to balance and eat at the same time.

Definitely no hot food. If seated, a shake with a lid and straw should be ok.

Abra1t · 22/08/2025 13:43

SaltAirAndTheRust · 22/08/2025 12:47

I just don’t want to be a dick, basically.

It’s nice that you care.

Notellinganyone · 22/08/2025 13:46

I eat my cheese bagel on the bus every morning as I have a very early commute. Go for it!

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/08/2025 13:55

As long as it doesn't have a strong smell and doesn't leave lots of mess behind, it's fine in my view. I hate it when people eat chips or burgers on public transport. Fruit, a protein shake, a cereal bar are no problem. I would avoid pastries and many sandwiches due to mess or smell.

I’ve had to read your post three times and I still don’t get your point but I get the point the other poster was making with the comparison. We know she’s not asked about a phone, it’s a comparison/example to show what would be loutish behaviour.
