To ask if you’d judge someone if they ate breakfast on the bus?

I’m obviously not talking a huge meal, or anything like that.

Im starting a new job next week and it means I lose a good hour in the morning. Im not going to have time to do the type of breakfast I do now (scrambled eggs, porridge etc.), so im just planning on taking some fruit and a protein shake on the bus, at least for the first week or so until I’ve learnt the ropes in terms of the commute.

Would you judge someone for doing that?

YABU - yes it’s grotty and you should just slam the protein shake before work

YANBU - don’t really care

I've seen lots of people with coffees and croissants on public transport. I think a protein shake and banana will be fine. Only eggs would be seen as antisocial.

TY78910 · 22/08/2025 14:40

Crack on, people buy full on hot lunches at stations and eat on the train. Those stink, but it’s the fast paced world we live in.

Dabberlocks · 22/08/2025 14:45

A shake or some fruit, fine - I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I might judge someone for giving their pre-schooler a can of Red Bull to drink on the bus though (and yes, I have seen that happen).

opencecilgee · 22/08/2025 14:47

I often see people eating overnight oats on the train

Yeah I’ve basically never commuted in this way, I don’t wanna be a dick to everyone at 7:30 in the morning! I know some people feel really strongly about this sort of thing!

TBH, if you've never tried to get on a bus at 7.30am (in a lot of places, 6.55 - 7.10am is about the latest time you'll even have a hope of getting on the first three buses), I think you're being a little optimistic of having a seat to be able to open up a shake, much less escape without ending up with it down you.

i live in a small town, outside of the school run and the middle of the day our buses are pretty much always dead quiet

If it was just a shake and fruit as you describe then it wouldn't really bother me, provided you're not a slurpy drinker or noisy eater, and that you took any rubbish away with you. When I commuted to work though it was standing room only, it would have been impossible to eat/drink anything without elbowing or generally annoying other people.

hooverthefloor · 22/08/2025 16:37

No hot food or alcohol, is usually the rule on buses. I (and probably others) would also add nothing that smells a lot. But that's not what you're planning to eat anyway.

Glitchymn1 · 22/08/2025 16:39

Not unless you’re wiping your fingers in the seat and tossing your rubbish in the aisle. Couldn’t care less, even if it whiffed a bit.
DM used to make me salmon rolls on school bus trips 💪🏼🤣

tuvamoodyson · 22/08/2025 16:40

Yes.

Well, yes, but 7.30am is school run for secondaries and people going to work, isn't it?

Not really, plus the bus I’m getting now doesn’t go past any schools! Like I say, I know my local area.

Lots of people in my office bring breakfast in and eat it before they start work. We have a few tables and chairs near the kitchen area. I’d get in a few minutes early and do that myself rather than eat on the bus or train.
No judgement at all. I prefer to wash my hands before eating - but everyone is different.

ChopsyHatesFungus · 23/08/2025 10:08

You need to learn not to give a fuck what random strangers think about you.
Other people’s opinions are irrelevant.

LastKnownSurvivor · 23/08/2025 10:11

Someone eating breakfast on the bus wouldn't even register. You could have some fruit on the bus and then make yourself porridge from a sachet at work, assuming there'll be a microwave there. Or you could take porridge in a food flask to eat on the bus.

JMSA · 23/08/2025 10:14

A hot breakfast, yes.
What you’re having, no.

Best of luck!

I hate when people do this. It’s so tacky and unpleasant for other commuters. But you won’t be the only one…

Since when did having a drink and piece of fruit in public, become ‘tacky and unpleasant’? The world has gone mad!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/08/2025 10:15

I'd only judge if it was smelly or messy. Fruit and a protein shake sounds fine.

No, not at all.

CoralOP · 23/08/2025 10:47

I find nothing offensive at all about someone eating a piece of fruit, I would judge someone who does find this offensive 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

TheChosenTwo · 23/08/2025 10:51

I couldn’t find anything at all to get worked up about here, a drink and a piece of fruit for heavens sake! Not like you’re bringing smoked kippers on the bus!!

I’m hoping that it’ll be pretty standard for people to do this, but at least for the first week I just want to be sure I’m not coming into the office as the weirdo who eats her breakfast there 🤣

OP posts:
TheCurious0range · 23/08/2025 10:52

I sometimes make banana bread for this purpose, the recipe I use doesn't contain any sugar and has a healthy dollop of nut butter, so it's a solid breakfast especially with a protein drink. Fruit alone would've be filling enough for me. You can also make them as muffins

Yes, I'd do the same in a new job - check out the lie of the land first!

No one is going to bat an eyelid at someone eating a banana on the bus.

I'd hold my nose - bananas stink.
