Just read this awful story in the Guardian. Awful and makes me feel so angry and so unsafe as a half Black woman.

And I fear he will be successful, just like the buffoon across the pond

And backed by some of the same people no doubt.

Yeah. These people already walked among us, just keeping their awful thoughts private so we didn’t fully know they were racist scum bags.

In a way, useful to know what you are actually dealing with rather than the insidious horrible racism you can never prove.

But then also so horrifically bad, sad and mad.

Onetimeusername1 · 20/08/2025 21:07

I was out on a rare night out last weekend and heard a large group of people loudly chanting EDL (English Defence League, racist organisation) in the beer garden facing the street. Very troubling they felt so emboldened.

brewshaw · 20/08/2025 21:08

I clicked on one video on youtube which turned out to be some racist right wing rant which I reported and now my feed is full of them. I click not interested but back they come after a day or two. It feels very much like the algorithm is pushing this stuff, the content creators are all just grifters looking to make money out of pandering to peoples fears and prejudice.

But they weren't racist ....

Onetimeusername1 · 20/08/2025 21:14

To add to my above experience, during the last election quite a lot of people I know unashamedly told me they voted for Farage's party because he would sort things out. Which I get is a (pie in the sky) idea that all the country needs is a party that cuts red tape but that's clearly at a cost to racial harmony so still in my books a dick move.

Also, some family members a couple of months ago started having a conversation about how awful the boat people are... So, yes, agree with others. I've known these people for years and they've never outwardly shown these leanings before.

ChilliChoco · 20/08/2025 21:18

30% of Mumsnetters have voted that YABU to this. That is an upsetting statistic

Yes much worse and more to come I think. These are very sad times we are living in.

Spidey66 · 20/08/2025 21:23

I think it’s to do with the rise of the far right, starting with Trump, then Farage etc, blaming everything on immigration and just moving onto to those who aren’t white UK through and through.

Not surprising though, sadly.

SpottyCheeseEater · 20/08/2025 21:27

I'm a POC immigrant. But I agree with stop the boat. The asylum system is abused by economic migrants. And I do firmly believe some of those unvetted people bring with them cultures that are not compatible with 21st century Britain.

However, with view as above, I believe Tommy Robinson should be jailed and I can never vote for Reform. I imagine many people MN-ers label as 'far right' have similar views as mine.

OSTMusTisNT · 20/08/2025 21:27

I think the racists have always been there but kept a bit of a lid on it or the justice system was soon upon them.

Now they're coming together in mass groups organised online and they have safety in numbers, our prisons are full so whatever The Police do, we're ultimately being let down by the courts as very few of these abhorrent people end up in prison.

Out of genuine interest, why is it that some immigrants are okay but others aren’t?

Because when some people talk of sending people home etc, they mean all of them. All varieties of immigrant, economic or otherwise.

Those that do won't be awarded asylum.

Which cultures do you mean? We have people from all sorts of cultures coming to the UK on visas to live and work or study. Do your worries apply to them too or only the people on small boats?

I think many POC agree with stopping the boats but out and out racists are using this to justify their views and actions, such as Tommy Robinson in the article linked, which is directly affecting all POC in the UK.

Immigrants who will and can integrate are of course welcomed. But would you welcome Taliban fighters to your community for instance? And look at Sweden how it's become the crime central in Europe. Facts.

Yes, I am expecting to be told to go home myself. If things become unbearable I intend to as I'm economically capable. In general though, I have never experienced unpleasant racism in my day to day life. Majority of people I've met are very tolerant unless you push your values onto them.

Wishing14 · 20/08/2025 21:38

@SleeplessInWhereverI think very few people mean that. That’s an extreme view. I think the immigrants whose beliefs are incompatible are not ok, surely? Do you agree? Or do you think that no beliefs are incompatible? Or, the final choice, do you think we should bend to accommodate the beliefs of minority to ensure inclusiveness?

Yes agree. That's why I can't vote for Reform. Not all Reform supporters are racist but almost all racists vote for them.

I believe some are genuine but you have more confidence in the system than I do. I think the processing should be accelerated and the failed ones should deported pronto.

It applies to all. In my country some sub cultures believe in marriage with children. Would you like that in the UK?

Honestly, that’s really positive for you.

In my hometown last year there were men stopping traffic and only letting through white people. One of those stopped and attacked was one of my colleagues, and his wife and children. He was born here, he’s 3rd generation. So was his wife. He wasn’t pushing his values, he was going to Aldi.

For a period he couldn’t allow his wife to go shopping by herself for fear of attack. Like I said, born here.

The immigration they derive from was welcomed, asked for, their grandparents invited here. They’re the “right kind” of immigrant. But that doesn’t matter to your average racist.

In some areas of the country, it’ll be all POC and non-British attacked, or told to go home, etc.

I think people are allowed different beliefs? 😂

It's a disservice to say the British people I've met in my 15 years+ haven't been good to me. That's my personal experience.

I am a realist, I've experienced racism in my country where girls my age were systematically raped. They came to our neighbourhoods and raped and killed so I'm not naive about this.

Of course not, we wouldn't welcome any terrorists.....unless of course they are the 'right kind of terrorist' aka IRA, then we vote them in as an MP and keep them in office for several terms!
