Just read this awful story in the Guardian. Awful and makes me feel so angry and so unsafe as a half Black woman.

The right wing media and politicians like Farage have been scapegoating immigrants, including people who are here perfectly legally, the poor/the unemployed and disabled for years while protecting the rich parasites that have been draining the country of its resources.

This is creating a toxic environment where some people feel they can voice racist views without consequences.

Also the internet/social media is giving all the cowardly, racist keyboard warriors a platform to spread their poison.

I dont believe the UK is more racist. I think it has just become less taboo to voice racist opinions which have always been held.

Yeah. These people already walked among us, just keeping their awful thoughts private so we didn’t fully know they were racist scum bags.

Messycoo · 20/08/2025 20:44

This is what media does, whips up a storm and as the article says disinformation!!
your know your self of the people who are closest to you family, friends and wider circle … ask yourself is this really my life ????
if not then why would you allow the media to dictate how you feel !!
the media is to blame for most of this discontent and it makes them happy to know you/ we believe them .
Everything we read is biased, and I ask myself is this relevant to me ? If not then I move on ….. life is TO short to get hook into this negativity.

I’m not so sure that’s the case. You only have to look at house prices and demand in areas that are less diverse.

I don't think it is cause and effect that way round. More that successive governments house migrants (Windrush onwards) in the lowest income communities as cheap.

Osmosisfreight · 20/08/2025 20:45

I also think people now hide behind anonymous accounts online and spew their shite. Social media makes like-minded people feel like they have a community and are justified in what they say. Definitely was a shift after/during covid imo. I think it suits the gov (all parties) for the “illegals” are taking our jobs lot to carry on, it takes the limelight off of their many many faults and failings.

I am Bi-racial (black and Arabic) my DH is White English, our teenage son looks very Arabic and I do worry, will he be targeted as one of the “boat people”. And I hate thinking that way I really do.

YANBU @AliceMaforethought.

This happened earlier this week in my city. My first thought was I hope the police go through this scumbag's phone with a fine toothcomb.

rockstarshoes · 20/08/2025 20:46

I hate it!
I hate that the woes of the Country are being placed at the door of Asylum Seekers! If we closed every hotel & stopped the boats tomorrow none of the problems we have now would disappear!

Infact it would get worse! The people we need to come from abroad to work in the NHS & the care system, tech industry you name it would stop coming!

We would be a poorer Country, Economically & Culturally!

I think that you are right. People are getting very twitchy about illegal immigrants hanging around play areas etc. and innocent guys like this playing with family end up caught in the crossfire.

Didn't take long did it?

People are "twitchy" about lies and misinformation. There are no illegal immigrants hanging around play areas. But you just claimed that this was justification for some "innocent" bloke being caught up in it. If people were not posting lies then innocent people would have no reason to fear.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/08/2025 20:47

It came as zero surprise to me that abusers and misogynists are over-represented amongst our racists.Angry

We used to live in West London and our DD1 started at the local primary. We noticed she wasnt being invited to any parties or playdates, and our invites were nearly all turned down. We saw some of her classmates in the park one day, she walked over to them and started playing with them, then their mums called them over and when they came back they said 'we aren't allowed to play with you'. Thinking she had maybe upset or accidentally hurt one of them I walked over to one of the mums to apologise, she said to me ' sorry no English' (i knew she spoke good english as heard her talking to class teacher at pick up) and walked back to her friends. They were laughing and pointing at DD calling her 'slutty' because she was wearing shorts on a hot day.

So yes, we moved out of London during covid, as DH could then work from home, and we wanted to live somewhere where we felt part of a commuinity, and we needed more space than our current home, and wanted a place which was calmer than London. Racism definitely played a part in our move, and should definitely never be tolerated

My husbands family are immigrants, and they too say how they experienced discrimination when they came to England, but found London was more accepting than rural areas, it's strange now that it's become more racist/divided than rural areas.

Well rid if them what kind of moron ridicules a child wearing shorts on a hot day??????

They do where I live. It's a proper melting pot here though, literally people from all over the world and everyone in together. I have worked in schools here for the last 10 years and there are very few racist incidents.

Wowwee1234 · 20/08/2025 20:50

OP you are entirely correct. Overt racism is often not challenged well, covert even less so, especially in the media. Small boats, illegals, boat people - all just horrible terms for people seeking asylum many of them legitimately. I am genuinely scared for the future and the directiin we are going in.

Wishing14 · 20/08/2025 20:51

British people on the whole have wanted multiculturalism but many people who have immigrated here absolutely do not want that. That is the truth of it. Some (not all, obviously) want a society ruled by Sharia law, who as such have very strong beliefs that are simply at odds with western values- tolerance, freedom, individualism etc. They will judge your daughters dancing in the school fete in fun revealing costumes, whilst their daughters and wives are covered, modest and holy. Many do not want to integrate. I would be interested to know if people would agree that this is a problem in some places? Remember the Stacey Dooley documentary some years ago? I do struggle to see how all peoples and cultures can peacefully coexist IF their guiding principles are fundamentally at odds.

FiveBarGate · 20/08/2025 20:51

I think we need to open up proper discussion.

Having concerns that allowing people to jump the asylum system by arriving on small boats, putting them up in hotels made up exclusively of men, being concerned about the very vulnerable being left behind in the countries they have left, feeling worried about how those countries ever improve if you remove large sections of the working population is not racist.

But for too long we have shouted down anyone who is anything other than supportive.

This has created the space for the genuinely racist opinions to take hold.

It's Brexit all over again. Just shout gammon at people and belittle them because there's no negative impact when you have sufficient funds to enjoy choice over where you live.

alphabetti · 20/08/2025 20:52

Huge rise in racism and some people’s acceptance of it. Whenever there is issues voiced there are shouts of illegal immigrants are to blame, boat people, if i was to come in from france i’d get housed for free….. The media is allowing this and it’s a deflection of the big issues that have been allowed to spiral out of control for years…

I regularly go to a park in a deprived area that’s got higher than average % of immigrants and asylum seekers and i haven’t seen men hanging around playgrounds the only ones i’ve seen there are the ones playing with their own children.

I would be heartbroken if my children had to be taken out of a war zone or place they were in danger and leave all they know behind and travel a dangerous journey to be hit with racism and not allowed same as other children. We should help these children and young men to minimise their trauma and mental health.

If we cut our bodies up we all have same insides we should take care of each other and treat each other with dignity not hatred.

I also blame Labour for pandering to racists instead of reinforcing how unacceptable racism is. Of course racism is getting worse, none of the most powerful actors in the country are standing up to it.

I think it's worse than that. I think it is a deliberate, and probably well-funded, propaganda campaign. Farage is hoping to ride the wave right into number 10, like Boris did with "Get Brexit done."

They are using social media like Dominic Cummings did (see below) to target the people they think they can sway to their way of thinking.

I've said that on a few threads, the extreme far right have never gone away if you're old enough to remember the NF /BNP then you'll recognise the language and rhetoric.
The racism won't stop at asylum seekers once emboldened it will be directed to anyone of colour.
Mixed race relationships are a definite no no to the extreme far right as it's seen as the dilution of the white race.

"Billys joined the National Front
He always was a little runt
he's got his hand in the air with the other cunts
You gotta humanize yourself"

We ask about areas not because we want to make sure we're away from white people, but because we have to do a risk assessment every time we visit/move somewhere due to potential abuse and targeting. I would absolutely LOVE to live in the rural English countryside but I could never because of how I look, and how my children could be treated - I wouldn't chance it, the risk is too high.

ninjahamster · 20/08/2025 21:00
