Just read this awful story in the Guardian. Awful and makes me feel so angry and so unsafe as a half Black woman.

I’m a non-white immigrant and I agree with stopping the boats and having a moratorium on immigration. There’s only so much immigration a society can cope with and integrate. And Britain has had more immigration in the last two decades than in the previous thousand years.

It’s not exactly surprising that British people are concerned by the speed of the change they see around them. There are ethnic enclaves in cities around the UK where people have no contact with wider UK society- they speak their own language, shop in their own shops, no need to learn English… and many of the arrivals here don’t even like the UK.

I moved here because I loved the history, language and culture and wanted to be a part of it, see it around me, participate in it. I didn’t want it to change to fit me, which is what happened. There are now 40,000 people on the terror watch list and it costs a fortune to keep tabs on all these people who actively dislike the UK and wish it harm.

It’s recipe for disaster and I don’t really see why anyone is surprised that tensions are rising.

Exactly this. I share your views 100%.

I'm going to leave some blank as these lines are used by the extreme far right.
If it ain't wh...it ain't ri...
Ain't no bl... In the Union jack so send them fucking back.
Now do you think the people that hold these type of beliefs can be reasoned with and they do exist unfortunately.

I find it incredibly hard to accept that anyone who moved here because they like our history would have a bad word to say about people who have risked their lives crossing the actual sea.

You cannot choose a country to live in because you like it; and then tell others they can’t.

That would be like me moving to Spain tomorrow, and then telling them to shut the borders because I’m here now so it’s full.

SleeplessInWherever · 20/08/2025 21:42

Honestly, that’s really positive for you.

In my hometown last year there were men stopping traffic and only letting through white people. One of those stopped and attacked was one of my colleagues, and his wife and children. He was born here, he’s 3rd generation. So was his wife. He wasn’t pushing his values, he was going to Aldi.

For a period he couldn’t allow his wife to go shopping by herself for fear of attack. Like I said, born here.

The immigration they derive from was welcomed, asked for, their grandparents invited here. They’re the “right kind” of immigrant. But that doesn’t matter to your average racist.

In some areas of the country, it’ll be all POC and non-British attacked, or told to go home, etc.

I remember seeing clips on YouTube of people doing that. I wonder if it was the same ones. Horrifying.

People to assume every non-white person they see is a boat person.

Masmavi · 20/08/2025 21:53

I want a wealthy person to support that family in suing Tommy Robinson for defamation. Despicable despicable despicable

I believe some are genuine but you have more confidence in the system than I do. I think the processing should be accelerated and the failed ones should deported pronto.

It applies to all. In my country some sub cultures believe in marriage with children. Would you like that in the UK?

I agree processing shoukd be speeded up.

No of course I wouldn't. But UK doesn't allow child marriage and that is not going to change.

Probably. I don’t live there now; but my hometown and family are all in Middlesbrough.

The situation there last year was dreadful. A (white) friend of mine had her car set alight because it was essentially parked on the “wrong” street.

The guy this post is about, lives less than 10 miles away from there.

Some areas are perhaps hotspots in that respect, and people living in those areas are at risk of some real harm if things continue the way they are.

I came here legally. I have desirable, marketable skills in tech. Married to an Englishman. I didn't lie in my visa or PR application and have been contributing high rate tax for years. I never took a penny from your benefit system. And most importantly I integrate very well. If you do the same in Spain, I doubt they'll not be welcoming.

So you'd welcome anyone just because they arrive here by boat, would you?

I’ll tell you why. Because I did it legally. I didn’t break in. I don’t break into a nation and then expect them to house me, feed me and clothe me. I take a dim view of those who break the law when entering and then have the audacity to flout the law again once they’re lucky enough to be here and rape and abuse young children and women.

I’ve lived in Spain. I experienced racism there as a child - I got the old, stale bread to eat because I was a foreigner, they wouldn’t sell me fresh. No books in my language, no one bent the rules for me - I had to learn pretty damn quick. And you know what? Their country, their rules. If I didn’t like it or want to learn Spanish, I had the option to leave. I wasn’t entitled to be there.

And what do you think that these people think when they see you? Do you think that you are somehow going to be put on a different level from any other non white, by people who have a problem with the colour of a person's skin? You came here, but that's okay right!

@SleeplessInWhereverincompatible ones? 😂

Incompatible how and with who?

I’m atheist, any one with any religion has a different belief system to me. I’m working class, people born into wealth may have different and “incompatible views” compared to mine.

I only speak English. That’s anyone with any additional language out.

We can have different beliefs and views and live in the same place.

Nobody’s trying to make me an upper class, bilingual, believer in God, because that’s their life, are they?

We can be different.

Aqwsde · 20/08/2025 22:01

I have name changed for this.

This is my hometown, a place that in my 35 years has never had anyone but white British living in it. That is until the last year or two when a significant number of migrants moved it and it has completely changed the place. People no longer feel safe and hate the change. I’m not saying this guy should be targeted but this is one of the problems with the current uncontrolled migration and poor migrant relocation strategy

Oh and I didn't expect to fall in love with an Englishman. I didn't choose the UK. I would have stayed in my country if my husband had wanted to but his career is here at the moment.

And btw France is a safe country. Why do you think they got on the boat risking their lives?

Marylou2 · 20/08/2025 22:01

Sadly I think the thin veneer of tolerance is about to crack in so many areas. I think there'll be a huge increase in votes for Reform at the next election. I've never known a time when so many people are expressing anti immigration views that veer into racist territory. I could see Brexit coming very clearly and a dangerous shift to the right is coming too.

I think both of us immigrants are being attacked by the usual suspects MN-ers 😂 it's quite ironic tbh.

LadyKenya · 20/08/2025 22:03

If the Government opened safe routes for the Countries where people are coming from, then they would not have to 'break in' as a pp so eloquently put it.Hmm

Echobelly · 20/08/2025 22:03

I'm white so it's hard for me to judge but it certainly seems likely many racists are feeling emboldened, especially with lots of rhetoric online essentially framing racism as just being 'anti woke' , just 'speaking honestly' etc.

He's not racist, people are always using the wrong terms. It's nothing to do with skin colour. He doesn't like the islamification of the UK. You can call him Islamaphobic if you like.

How desperate would you have to be to get somewhere to risk your life, or the life of your children, getting there?

They’re not illegal until their asylum has been denied, and then they’re here without a visa and would be deported. Which I have no issue with, because once it’s actually decided that they’re not entitled to be here - fine. Until that point, they’re an asylum seeker. Not an illegal anything.

I know… very strange. Why do we seem to respect the nation’s laws more than they do?
