AIBU to think chocolate should NOT be kept in the fucking fridge?

ChocolateShouldNotBeInTheFuckingFridge · 19/08/2025 18:54

DH believes chocolate (including biscuits e.g. digestives) should be kept in the fridge because “it tastes nicer, keeps its shape and lasts longer”.

I believe chocolate should not be kept in the fridge because it’s fucking wrong, basically. Am I being unreasonable?

(There is also another AIBU worthy sub question, which is that if you can say you can fit a chocolate digestive in your mouth, YABU to then break it into pieces with bites as you put it in, so that it fits? This is clearly cheating and DH should be told he is YABU just for this alone? If I lose this fridge thread, I’ll start that one Wink)

The flavour is best at a particular temperature a little higher than the fridge, agreed, but it's hot at the moment, and cold chocolate is infinitely better than almost- melting. So YABU!

They were originally called Choc Express. Their boxes were designed to fit through letterboxes.

Oh interesting. Even if they are non-fridge heathens! Very interesting, thanks, I didn’t know that.

iamnotalemon · 19/08/2025 20:53

I do agree with you but also live in a hot country so sometimes I have to or it ends up like liquid but in the UK, definitely not

Most, but not all chocolate should be kept in the fridge. Mars and Snickers should be sliced and placed in freezer. Delicious. Think I might have to head out and buy some

Edited

I love a frozen mars bar but not straight off the shelf.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 19/08/2025 20:57

Officially, chocolate should not be in the fridge. It makes it get a 'bloom' and I think there's some other technical reason besides. Lessens the flavour or something.

Unofficially, many chocolates are improved by being cold from the fridge when the ambient temperature is too hot.

I'm with you on the biscuit one; if the test is fitting it in your mouth, you shouldn't need to start eating it in order to do that.

Fridge always, I like something hard in my life.

Ooo err missus 😁

Viviennemary · 19/08/2025 20:59

Chocolate - yes should be in fridge in hot weather. Otherwise revolting mush.

Biscuits probably not.

In hot weather, club biscuits and chocolate digestives are fine out of the fridge.

soupyspoon · 19/08/2025 21:00

Chocolate should be kept in the fridge yes

Biscuits no. They go soft.

GentleSheep · 19/08/2025 21:04

No chocolate in the fridge for me unless it's a hot spell. Then I usually don't feel like eating chocolate anyway. Otherwise no biscuits in the fridge! Only exception I can think of is things like truffles or chocs with centres that need refrigerating.

poostinkywink · 19/08/2025 21:06

I agree with the OP. I’ve never understood the fridging of chocolate. It melts in your mouth and that’s the flavour hit. According to my scientific research on this (aka quick google) it’s because warmth enhances the release of the chocolate’s aromatic and flavour compounds. When you bite cold chocolate it doesn’t taste of anything, and then you have to wait for it to melt in your mouth to taste the niceness. Google says cold choc dulls the flavour and aroma experiences and the slower melting and reduced volatility of flavour compounds results in a blander taste. Aaaaaand before that happens you have a mouthful of spit (sorry - that’s how it goes).
I warm mine up between my knees nomnomnomnomnom

It's not just that it ends up liquidy but more the issue of it 'blooming' on the surface 😳 Worst case scenario it actually turns to powder 🫤

wominzy · 19/08/2025 21:15

Chocolate does not go in the fridge, it goes straight in my mouth.

Seriously, there is no need to put choc in the fridge, if you do, you are buying too much of it if there's enough left to store!

I notice that chocolate is just on the shelf in hot countries like Spain and Italy and it does no harm. These are just ordinary shops not giant air conditioned monoliths either. So if they can do it so can we.

🤣😆 I live in Swansea - quite exotic for Wales really!

Indeed it is!

All I have to say to you is that the freezer is for Joe's, not chocolate.

Zempy · 19/08/2025 21:19

I can’t eat chocolate that hasn’t been kept in the fridge. It’s disgusting!

Ooh you said the magic word! I might have to pop along to St Helen’s Road tomorrow on my way back from a work meeting… they do a Welsh Cake flavour that I have yet to gorge myself on try…

Noseylittlemoo · 19/08/2025 21:21

I'm with you @ChocolateShouldNotBeInTheFuckingFridge and @SpidersAreShitheads .
Chocolate has a horrible texture and not as tasty from the fridge.
If you go to a chocolatier it is just a normal temperature there are no fridges.
My favourite regular chocolate is also Lindt Lindor and that is best when the centre is slightly melting almost like a chocolate fondant - I hate it when it's cold/when it's been in the fridge and there is no distinction between the "shell" and the "filling".

Chocolate is fine in the fridge, especially in the summer

But biscuits? In the fridge? Very very unreasonable!

No, mcvities chocolate digestives live in my fridge all the time😁

MeDadMeDad · 19/08/2025 21:33

I keep some chocolate in the fridge, not all e.g. wagon wheel, galaxy caramel, Cadbury mini roll all go in the fridge.
Dairy milk, milky bar etc... would be kept out of fridge.

ChocolateShouldNotBeInTheFuckingFridge · 19/08/2025 22:04

Mmmmm Lindt lindor <drool> If anyone put them in the fridge it would be LTB territory! Luckily DH doesn’t like them.

Actually just typing that sentence on top of this whole thread makes me question my love for DH even more…

Joking aside I love him very much and we have been laughing a lot at this thread. We have been very happily married for thirty years despite his bizarre food preferences. He brings me tea and a fresh croissant/danish pastry in bed every morning Smile so I’ll graciously admit defeat on this issue.

I shall report back on the frozen Bounty, in the interests of science, and furthering food knowledge you understand…

At Christmas I buy a box of after eights JUST FOR ME and keep them in the fridge. Lovely cold snap of chocolate with a minty middle mmmm 😋 . Woe betide anyone who steals them - although if they do I need to buy at least one more box obviously. However if I ever find out who steals them and leaves the little envelope in the box thereby tricking me into thinking I still have lots left there will be trouble !!
