Marks & Spencers bra fittings and trans women - they've missed the point

IdaGlossop · 18/08/2025 18:36

A mother complained to M&S when her daughter was approached in-store by a trans woman asking if she could be of assistance. The daughter needed a bra fitting and was upset as she could see that the member of staff was male. M&S apologised.

Today, in response to the incident, M&S have announced that bra fittings are for biological women only. The solution to the mother's complaint is to not deploy trans women staff in the lingerie department! Banning trans women from having bra fittings discriminates against trans women and doesn't solve the original problem.

YANBU = M&S have messed up with this decision
YABU = Banning trans women from bra fittings protects biological women from being offered bra fittings by trans women staff

I've managed to get by for the whole of my adult life without a bra fitting, and I suspect most women are the same, so I don't see why transwomen need to fuss about having bras fitted. Unless, of course, they have some kind of fetish about the business of wearing bras.

Wash your mouth out with soap!
Men would never have such a fetish!

I’d love to see any man exert his legal right to wear a bra.

The funny bit would be if M&S mounted a defense Canadian ball waxing style??

beachwalkx · 18/08/2025 20:35

I don’t even know why they still offer bra fittings as they’re shockingly bad at it

IdaGlossop · 18/08/2025 21:03

KilkennyCats · 18/08/2025 19:41

Why do you think transwomen (who are biologically male) need bra fittings, op?
They either have no boobs, or surgically constructed boobs in which case they’ll know their dimensions perfectly well.

Light bulb moment: they probably don't need bra fittings. Some want them though. Their back size could change if they lose or gain weight. Then they would need them.

Wouldn't be profitable because there aren't enough of them.

That leaves online bra fittings.

Why would a man need a bra if his back size changed?

Bras are required to accommodate the female breasts, which are on the front of a woman's body.

Not their backs.

Well, that's fine then.

They can get bras online, like the vast majority of women.

I have spoken and interacted with several trans women, they are living their life and it’s nothing to do with fetish.

There might be some, but most are doing nothing to hurt women. It is insulting to say it’s a fetish and incorrect.

For quite a few men it is absolutely a fetish. They are quite keen to tell us all about it.

Maybe the ones you know are not, or maybe they just don’t tell you?

TurkeyTwizlers · 18/08/2025 21:11

Some want them though.

Im sure a lot of men want women to do things because they like it, doesn’t mean it should happen though.
clearly there can be a specialised service for transwomen and they will want to go into the women’s.

A bra is fitted based on boob size and back size. So if a man has surgically created boobs and gains weight, the boobs will stay the same size and the back will increase in size. If he wears a bra, he'll need one with a bigger back size but with cups the same size as the previous bra, hence a bra fitting.

What do you think the 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 and so on refers to?

Absolutely. Specialised services are no good, they want unwilling women in the general space to participate as validation props and a woman to do the fitting, getting off on the fact she has to touch them, and can't say no if she wants to keep her job.

If you had a woman bra fitter who had absolutely no issue, happy to fit their bras a plenty, in a specialised service, just for them - nah. It would be like that time a trans swimming race category was introduced and they had fuck all entries.

So he can go online and order the right size, can't he?

Why are you so obsessed with how the poor fake boobied men are going to manage if they gain weight?
Why not have some empathy with the women having to change in the adjoining cubicle, or the young girls having to avoid being measured by biological males claiming they’re female?

Barney16 · 18/08/2025 22:26

Tape measure? Seems a perfectly simple solution. Measure your own boobs and order from Amazon.

Hoardasurass · 18/08/2025 22:43

@IdaGlossop that's not what happened.
The male member of staff worked in the homeware department and went up to what he thought was an unaccompanied 14 year old girl in the lingerie department when she was looking at bras, she was not there for a fitting, this man decided to then ask this girl if she need his help.
Now as we all know no staff approach customers in M&S and no man should be trying to discuss bras with a girl he doesn't know, also he was not working in the lingerie department. This was an inappropriate creepy man with questionable behaviour at work the fact that hes trans is irrelevant its the fact that hes male that's the problem.
M&S spectacularly mishandled the mothers valid complaint about the man in questions behaviour and things blew up in their faces. Then after a really dodgy transwomen (so dodgy that the Scottish greens kicked him out of the party) booked himself a bra fitting and publicised it online M&S have chosen to exclude all men from both fitting bras on women or being fitted by female staff.
May I suggest that you look at any media outlet other than pink news if you want any accurate information about this incident or 1 of the many threads about this that are already running

Laura95167 · 18/08/2025 22:47

What if the trans woman is post op and needs a bra then?

Actually at M&S you have to book a bra fitting, so the trans person saying do you need a bra fitting never meant they would be the one offering the service. Just potentially booking it in.

When is it ok for a man to ask a 14 year girl who he never met before about her underwear?

No, because he worked in the homeware section.

Why are some posters so intent on excusing this predatory behaviour at all costs?

StMarie4me · 18/08/2025 19:02

It is sexualising a thing that should not be sexualised.
So while you’re doing that, will the fitters have to prove their sexuality? As a gay woman should not be doing a bra fitting if it’s sexualised in this way.

How will M&S prove the biological sex of their customers?

As Alan Cummings has said; why would anyone pretend to be trans to attack women, when trans women are treated worse than sexual assaulters in this world now.

Some transwomen attack women and girls just like some men do because transwomen are men.
Look up Amy George and Katie Dawalski for example

CassOle · 18/08/2025 23:18

SingingintheRadiator · 18/08/2025 19:30

Yes, now under the trans umbrellas, according to Stonewall, of course.

We also seem to have forgotten that crossdressing used to be considered (by law enforcement) a red flag. Men who commit sexual crimes, and serial killers, have a much higher incidence of crossdressing than other groups. But apparently, it's all fine, and no man would ever exploit trans loopholes or act out their fetish on unsuspecting women just going about their days.

'(Fair warning: this is a long one, even for me.)

For anyone who doesn’t know, I’m a law enforcement officer with experience investigating both homicides and sex crimes.

When I was a rookie in 2007, there was a clear understanding that crossdressing men in women’s spaces were often there for sexual reasons...'

Alan Cummings obviously has no idea how far certain men will go, not just to attack us, but to humiliate, upset, see us naked, hang out with us like one of the girls, grope us and well the list goes on. It’s apparent how unsympathetic gay men in particular have been, I guess because they’re not so harassed by straight men as we are.

Alan Cumming is fully TWAW. Did you see that nauseating clip of him recently on a US TV show, telling the world how special and magical trans people are 🙄
