Marks & Spencers bra fittings and trans women - they've missed the point

IdaGlossop · 18/08/2025 18:36

A mother complained to M&S when her daughter was approached in-store by a trans woman asking if she could be of assistance. The daughter needed a bra fitting and was upset as she could see that the member of staff was male. M&S apologised.

Today, in response to the incident, M&S have announced that bra fittings are for biological women only. The solution to the mother's complaint is to not deploy trans women staff in the lingerie department! Banning trans women from having bra fittings discriminates against trans women and doesn't solve the original problem.

YANBU = M&S have messed up with this decision

That member of staff wasn’t even working in that department, and then approached an unaccompanied minor.

Who do you suggest does these bra fittings on these men. We also don’t want men in our changing rooms. Maybe they can offer the same service in the men’s department, apparently all staff are trained in bra fitting so there should be male staff who could do that.
Not allowing men into women’s changing room is not discriminating them BTW.

So he is a child predator and attempted to assault a child. Why isn’t he facing charges???

Especially when we know that for many men who identify as trans women it is literally a fetish.

This is absolute rubbish and shows you’ve never met or spoken to anyone who is trans.

I had a middle aged man sitting in my living room in a pink crop top telling me he's actually a teenage girl. It very much is a fetish for some of not all.

Point taken about the wrong question. I think trans women should have a specialist bra fitting service, carried out by other trans women in a dedicated store or at home.

you haven't been paying attention, have you?

You are conflating two things here, OP.

I know, I know, I shouldn't expect these people to make sense

Having only read the Pink News article, there was no conflation. The Scottish Sun article also mentions that only biological women will do bra fittings,

The person (That nobody knows if they were actually a trans person) approached and offered directions to the correct department. M&S shouldn't be apologising for a staff member doing their job. The mother is an anti trans activist its pretty obvious this was set up from the beginning.

No the girl and her mum were in the right department for what they wanted. The person (who didn’t work in that department) approached the girl offering her help.

Kreepture · 18/08/2025 19:15

m&S are shit at bra fitting.

not that that's the point, i'm aware, but they're absolutely useless and there are much better places to get fitted than there with their hasbeen, ,going out of style, shockingly expensive, uncomfortable shite bra offerings.

I have trans friends, and i think they should boycott the place, it's shit and i haven't recommended it to a single one.

M&S’s response isn’t in relation to this incident.

It’s been prompted by a number of TIW making ‘bra fitting’ appointments in the stores over the past few days. They’re all at it on Twitter sharing their confirmation emails, and getting quite excited at the idea of a woman measuring them for a bra and going along with their opinion that they need one.

Whatever side of the debate you fall on, Pink News are a terrible source if you want actual facts, unfortunately.

Anyway, there's no such thing as a "trans" woman. There are women, and men, and men who identify as women, and women who identify as men.

Brefugee · 18/08/2025 19:19

IdaGlossop · 18/08/2025 19:13

In what way?

men who say they are women (aka transwomen) don't want bra fittings or anything else in a 3rd space. They want women to be forced to entertain them in their spaces.

Yep. Even if it isn't a fetish (which it definitely is for some of these guys who've been posting with glee), the women fitting those bras are still being used as props, aren't they?

Of course. To help the trans-identified men to feel "cute".

The news reports don't need to mention the mother, in that case. THIS making appointments as you describe is yet one more illustration that the trans issu is going to take up more public space than it merits.

Yes, now under the trans umbrellas, according to Stonewall, of course.

We also seem to have forgotten that crossdressing used to be considered (by law enforcement) a red flag. Men who commit sexual crimes, and serial killers, have a much higher incidence of crossdressing than other groups. But apparently, it's all fine, and no man would ever exploit trans loopholes or act out their fetish on unsuspecting women just going about their days.

That is not what M&S said

A staff member who is male went up to a 14 year old girl in the underwear department.

She was shopping in the correct department and not looking for help from staff.

The male began speaking to the 14 year old girl.

She had not spoken to him before this exchange.

The girls mother voiced her concerns to management.

It affects 51 percent of the population in a variety of situations, from bra fittings to rape crisis centres, so it merits a whole lot os public space if you ask me.

It's because of trans activism that it affects 51% of the population. If biological men were not militantly invading women's spaces, there would be no need for the discourse.

sone men may have a fetish for dressing in women’s clothing but there are others who are trans for other reasons. Some provision is needed

It is sexualising a thing that should not be sexualised.
So while you’re doing that, will the fitters have to prove their sexuality? As a gay woman should not be doing a bra fitting if it’s sexualised in this way.

How will M&S prove the biological sex of their customers?

As Alan Cummings has said; why would anyone pretend to be trans to attack women, when trans women are treated worse than sexual assaulters in this world now.

Why should M&S have to do anything to prove the sex of their customers?

Wild idea.

If you are male dont ask any woman who you dont know who happens to work in a shop to touch your body without making it clear that you are male.

And if its man working do the exact same thing.

Yes, but I bet they won't be happy if the provision comes in the form of a man. Or even a transwoman. It's all about getting women involved.
