Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

I'm in favour of flying the flag more to reclaim it from the racists.

Fandango52 · 18/08/2025 14:05

It’s ‘British’, not ‘Brittish’.

Yes!

I was recently reading a book about Denmark and the flag being very much embedded into day to day life came up, I thought it very interesting!

I visited Copenhagen years ago and have always meant to go back to explore the country more.

randomchap · 18/08/2025 14:04

Nope, not a me problem.

Racism and the far right are on the rise. That's a problem for the whole country.

If you can't see how the flags are being misused to stir up racial and religious intolerance then you are being naive

You seem to have misread my post, please try again.

So am I

skippy67 · 18/08/2025 14:05

I feel intimidated. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking down a street that had loads of England flags on display. Unless there's a football tournament on😅

I think over time it's been hijacked by white nationalists who are too thick to realise that St George was actually Turkish.

Ain't that the truth.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 18/08/2025 14:06

is it okay to fly the Union Jack?

I’m Scottish and I think it’s a shame that an English person can’t proudly display their flag without being judged.

Totally agree (I'm Welsh).

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets have large Asian Muslim communities. I'm wondering where exactly these flags are being put up and by whom? I can't imagine Tower Hamlets council allowing it on their property if it's by private individuals.

Nothing wrong with either flag but would appreciate more information.

Some more information here.

The areas in Birmingham where the flags have been put up (Northfield and Weoley Castle and the surrounding areas) are still predominantly white, working class areas.

Rows of houses with England flags flying on lampposts outside

Council takes down England and union flags hung by Birmingham locals

Birmingham City Council says the flags are being removed due streetlights being upgraded.

No one here is saying otherwise.

Vaxtable · 18/08/2025 14:08

Ho get away with you. It’s the English flag go to Wales or Scotland and they are all flying their respective flags

why should flags of other country’s be acceptable to be kept flying, but not the English flag?

Jingoism and racism are not the same thing. You seem to be conflating the two

I was really hoping to hear non-white views.
There's a group who have decided to put up flags on lampposts without permission. They state this is to celebrate being English and for VJ Day. But in interviews they can't but help lapse into the "getting the country back" diatribe and it shows they are abusing the flag. They certainly werent rushing to put them up for VE Day. There's nothing wrong with the flag itself. But the way it's being used is disturbing. It's every lamppost on long lines of streets. It's heavily reminiscent of nazi flags.

How can you be sure that you’ll definitely hear ‘non-white views’ on an anonymous forum?

And what about hearing the views of people who are white and not born here, but are naturalised Britons - or those who are white and were born here but their parents were not born here?

Linenpickle · 18/08/2025 14:09

So it is okay to put up Palestine flags or Ukraine flags but not the English flag? Seriously, wtf! It’s not racism, it’s living in England, or UK, it’s being patriotic.

TheignT · 18/08/2025 14:10

MidnightPatrol · 18/08/2025 13:50

Do you think its heavily reminiscent of nazi flags when its done in Norway, Denmark, the US etc where flying the national flag is a source of great pride and very widespread?

Norwegian, Danish and US flags are nothing like nazi flags. The far right are strongly associated with the British and English flags. Maybe there needs to be a campaign to reclaim the flags.

"non-white" views. Bit racist that. How do you know what colour we are anyway?

She said the flags had "brought so much joy to the community", adding: "Everybody's buzzing, everybody's really happy seeing the flags, everybody's talking about it."

Strange. Don't these people have anything else going on in their lives?

Turkish?! The Turks didn't make it to Anatolia for another thousand or so years after St George

LavaHoover · 18/08/2025 13:51

From this thread I'm gathering that people who live in England feel that the flag itself is not problematic, but that it is often used to promote problematic beliefs. If that's the case, maybe everyone should just start displaying it all the time, outside houses and on cars and on public buildings. Take back your flag and its meaning will cease to have negative connotations.

Yes reclaim the flags.

DiscoBob · 18/08/2025 14:13

I am not that bothered but I guess I do somewhat associate St George's flag with the far right.

I think the issue in Birmingham is that the England/UK flags are being put up in largely white areas and the council are removing them (from lamp posts etc), but Palestine flags are not being as readily removed from lamp posts in largely Asian/Muslim areas because police presence is also needed to achieve this. The police bit was in a statement from the council who own all lamp posts, street furniture etc.
So there's a perception of unfairness.

The English flag isn't like a nazi flag either....!

Some of the far right may like to fly it... but that doesn't mean it's the only purpose of it, nor the only way people perceive it when they see it.

It's our national flag - that you see it flying and think it's got nazi connotations is really quite bleak. There needs to be an urgent campaign to reclaim it if that is the case.
