To ask those who are not white brittish how they feel about the flags?

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

I consider it racist. Technically jingoistic. To be flown by white people in areas of high diversity is a racist act to intimidates-yet this can’t be proven. (I have forgotten s word)

randomchap · 18/08/2025 13:51

Flying a flag of St George outside of major sporting tournaments smacks of Jingoism.

Sadly the flags of St George and the Union Jack have been hijacked by the far right. Phrases like Ain't no black in the union jack etc.

Who are these groups funding the flags? What is there intent? Riling up anti immigrant feeling?

Are they the groups putting the flags up on streetlights? So the council have to take them down so they can then generate rage bait articles and Facebook posts

AzurePanda · 18/08/2025 13:51

It’s the England Flag. How can it be racist to fly it?

LavaHoover · 18/08/2025 13:51

From this thread I'm gathering that people who live in England feel that the flag itself is not problematic, but that it is often used to promote problematic beliefs. If that's the case, maybe everyone should just start displaying it all the time, outside houses and on cars and on public buildings. Take back your flag and its meaning will cease to have negative connotations.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 18/08/2025 13:52

I think there should be more flag flying in general. If it’s being seen as a racist symbol it needs reclaimed. Fly it from public buildings like other countries do. It’s ridiculous that the national flag is seen as racist.

Worralorra · 18/08/2025 13:54

PicaK · 18/08/2025 13:45

I was really hoping to hear non-white views.
There's a group who have decided to put up flags on lampposts without permission. They state this is to celebrate being English and for VJ Day. But in interviews they can't but help lapse into the "getting the country back" diatribe and it shows they are abusing the flag. They certainly werent rushing to put them up for VE Day. There's nothing wrong with the flag itself. But the way it's being used is disturbing. It's every lamppost on long lines of streets. It's heavily reminiscent of nazi flags.

Do you also question what it feels like to white British people, to have flags of other nations flown with pride in theUK, while they are somehow expected to hide theirs as if they are ashamed of it? Indeed, councils have been removing the St George flags wherever they find them, while at the same time refusing to remove Palestinian flags, which could be causing offence to the many Jewish people who have lived in this country for generations.
Once you start banning one flag (and that the flag of the Country it is actually situated in) then you may as well ban all flags. If that’s not practical, then none should be banned.

randomchap · 18/08/2025 13:55

No one is suggesting banning the flag, don't be so daft

LadybugsAndSunshine · 18/08/2025 13:56

I live opposite a business in a seaside town that produces postcards and souvenirs, think royal family mugs, novelty tea towels. It usually has a Union Jack flying from the doorway but it changed to the St George’s cross a couple of weeks back, I don’t know why but it hasn’t crossed my mind that it’s due to racism, is this sort of thing seen as racist?

MiloMinderbinder925 · 18/08/2025 13:56

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets have large Asian Muslim communities. I'm wondering where exactly these flags are being put up and by whom? I can't imagine Tower Hamlets council allowing it on their property if it's by private individuals.

Nothing wrong with either flag but would appreciate more information.

GypsyQueeen · 18/08/2025 13:56

Seymour5 · 18/08/2025 13:50

The St George flag is 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 English, the Saltire/St Andrew flag is 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scottish, the Union flag is 🇬🇧 British.

@PicaK My black friend, who was born here and has ancestors going back generations here has no issue with the flags.

I know. I was responding to the op who had written brittish.

houwseevryweekend · 18/08/2025 13:56

i’m Asian and don’t think twice about any flags including the St George cross unless it’s in a notoriously racist BNP areas like Welling or there’s no reason for it. It represents England and it’s flown regularly during international football. I had a small Indian flag in London during Republic day and the Pakistani family across for me wished me and didn’t feel intimidated though I imagine flying it in Pakistan would be an act of aggression as a foreign flag. It’s just a flag representing a part of someone’s identity not a declaration of hatred. I think it’s sad we are letting some groups damage the reputation of British flags and an entire population feel more comfortable flying foreign flags than their own. It doesn’t happen in any other country and is just weird.

Surely this is a you problem?

The racism issue is much deeper and more complex.

How is putting up a St George flag ‘implicit racism’?

It’s really bizarre that the country’s flag, or flying it, is seen as being a racist act tbh.

It’s more tragic that the bastards have annexed our national symbol for their vile cause.

Loadsapandas · 18/08/2025 13:58

I suspect non-white people (many of whom will be British), aren’t not commenting because they are intimidated, I suspect they have little to say because they don’t give a shit.

IMO the right wing seem to be angering themselves into a tizzy of offence and anger about something that doesn’t exist.

Let them fly their flags, no one gives a fuck.

See it's funny because I come from an extremely flag loving country. There you celebrate birthdays and everything else with the national flag with no issue/ associate of racism. The issue is the far right has appropriate St George's flag and it's now become a symbol of that.

Arlanymor · 18/08/2025 14:00

I feel very sorry that people in England cannot fly the flag of St George because it has been hijacked in the past by nefarious people. I'm Welsh - we fly two flags, Y Ddraig Goch (Red Dragon) and St David's (black flag with yellow/gold cross) - and I can only imagine the uproar if anyone attempted to say they could not be flown because of perceived negative connotations. There would be widespread protests - I have no doubt at all.

tempnew · 18/08/2025 13:45

OP I think you are right. As a non-white British person I do instinctively think of it as belonging to the far right. That may well not be fair of me but that is the feeling I get.

Agree, it isn’t fair of you.
When in any other country is it deemed racist to fly their flag.

Idiot.

If I saw a St George's Cross being displayed, I wouldn't assume it was a symbol of far right extremism.

Any nationalistic group is likely to fly their countries flag, it's only in the UK where we seem to be leaning into the idea that it's some sort of dangerous symbol.

The way to 'take ownership' of the flag is probably for it to be flown more - be proud of it, let it be something people see daily as in countries like Denmark.

Nope, not a me problem.

Racism and the far right are on the rise. That's a problem for the whole country.

If you can't see how the flags are being misused to stir up racial and religious intolerance then you are being naive

I'm white, and I feel my flag is being hijacked. I love seeing the flag of St George fluttering from church towers on 23 April. But I hate it being used in this way.

I’m Scottish and I think it’s a shame that an English person can’t proudly display their flag without being judged.
