Won't be sorry to see it go.
Sick of the pestering for their tat and their shoddy ear piercing.
Hopefully they'll find other uses for their pocket money now 💰

The death of the High Street.

Darragon · 13/08/2025 15:27

Sorry, it's always been massively overpriced plastic tat made in China, so is it any surprise that people are now cutting out the middleman and buying from Temu for a fraction of the price with a lot more things to choose from (rightly or wrongly)? I went into one a couple of years ago and was offended by the prices for the products they were selling, could get identical stuff for less in ASDA.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 13/08/2025 15:27

My niece who's 10 loves it. But when I've been in there with her I've had to pick myself off the floor laughing at some of the prices. Like a cardboard ice cream tub with a tiny pad, pencil and stickers and a moshi monster type figure for £16!! I can't believe anyone would actually want it for a start, or pay that amount!

So I wouldn't be surprised either. But sad to see another chain go under.

this, they sell shite you can get much cheaper elsewhere

Needmorelego · 13/08/2025 15:28

My daughter loves the place and
they do actually have nice pieces of jewellery.
What they needed to do is stop with "Buy three get three free" offers and just lower the individual prices.
Even Claire's obsessed daughter doesn't always want 6 things.

SpottyAardvark · 13/08/2025 15:32

I sympathise with the people who are going to lose their jobs, almost all of whom are presumably women.

But in a wider sense, is it really such a bad thing for the planet that a retailer of pointless throwaway plastic tat is going under?

wandererofthekingdom · 13/08/2025 15:35

Unfortunately for them everything you can buy in there you can buy on Shein Temu and Amazon at the same price and quality, and also from the same original source most likely.
They do nothing that sets them apart to make them better than the online places, its just extortionately overpriced due to them having overheads the websites don't have. I'm not sorry to see it go.

FrenchLavendar · 13/08/2025 15:35

I don't recall ever having bought anything from Claire's Accessories, so I definitely won't miss it. I very rarely go to high street shops nowadays.

I'm trying to remember the last time I went to a town, parked in the multi-storey and went shopping. I know it was before I started my last job, so it would have been before the summer of 2004. Since then, virtually everything I've bought, other than food, has been online. I guess I'm one of people responsible for killing off the high street.

KawasakiBabe · 13/08/2025 15:35

I wish it had closed years ago, DD would’ve saved a small fortune, she’s 19 now. Actually scrap that, she can still spend a small fortune, it’s just not at Claire’s anymore.

What about the people that will lose their jobs though?

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 13/08/2025 15:36

The only thing they need to do in-store is piercing. The sales and promotions are all better online anyway. If a shop doesn't do in-store-only promotions, it's not going to drive foot traffic as it's easier to shop online.

taxguru · 13/08/2025 15:38

Incredibly it's lasted so long. Expensive plastic future landfill!

ladyofshertonabbas · 13/08/2025 15:38

Actually glad about this one. Complete tat and really high prices.

BreakingBroken · 13/08/2025 15:41

Really shit stuff, no loss to humanity.
Its unfortunate for the staff and even the high street situation but they really sell dreadful stuff.

FenderStrat · 13/08/2025 15:42

The BBC reporting that 2150 jobs are at risk - for anybody who cares.

EchoedSilence · 13/08/2025 15:43

I think it's a bit shit to be glad so many people could lose their jobs.

ManchesterLu · 13/08/2025 15:44

I used to love Claire's when I was younger (25 years ago ish) and would plan trips to town just so I could grab some new bobbles and a mystery bag or two.

It doesn't surprise me that they're not as popular now, as I think young people today have a taste for designer things thanks to influencers - and Claire's aren't as cheap as they used to be.. quite the opposite in fact!

No one on MN cares about the many women who will lose their jobs. More important that their precious kids stop asking for 'tat'

TwilightAb · 13/08/2025 15:47

I'm not surprised. In my local Claires they practically pounce on you when you go in. The last time I was in there I found it incredibly over priced.

HolidayHattie · 13/08/2025 15:48

I've shopped there a few times because they sell clip earrings for non-pierced ears which the nicer designer jewellery shops never do.

Which reminds me - I bought a pair earlier this year but haven't worn them. Where are they?

This. The prices are extortionate for saying it’s a shop basically aimed at children.

TizerorFizz · 13/08/2025 15:52

I don’t think Claire’s were universally poor. They had decent enough things if you looked. There’s quite a good selection of Tat sold elsewhere. River Island might be in trouble too. We need to convert high streets to leisure areas and recreational spaces. Too many shops will be empty.

Moonnstars · 13/08/2025 15:53

Oh my daughter will be gutted. I had promised her a trip there at the end of the school holidays.

Does anyone know if they are still accepting vouchers? Gift vouchers as well as their own reward scheme? Thanks
