Absolute tat at eye watering prices

Won't be sorry to see it go.
Sick of the pestering for their tat and their shoddy ear piercing.
Hopefully they'll find other uses for their pocket money now 💰

No thought for the staff as always.

No one on MN cares about the many women who will lose their jobs. More important that their precious kids stop asking for 'tat'

I think on a broader level it’s sad to see various brands go under. Jobs are lost.

I think it's a bit shit to be glad so many people could lose their jobs.

100%

Spanador · 13/08/2025 15:56

I will actually be a bit gutted about this. I've found them really useful for when a ball has fallen off my body jewellery, or when my nose stud has fallen out as I can just go in my local one and get a replacement straight away! Always found that really useful compared to ordering online and having to leave the jewellery out. I've always found their staff friendly and helpful too so it's very sad for them

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 13/08/2025 15:56

There is obviously still a demand for cheaper costume jewellery- but they are significantly more expensive than Sainsburys /Tescos, often not as stylish as similar priced costume jewellery stands in clothes shops.

StMarie4me · 13/08/2025 15:56

Moonnstars · 13/08/2025 15:53

Oh my daughter will be gutted. I had promised her a trip there at the end of the school holidays.

Does anyone know if they are still accepting vouchers? Gift vouchers as well as their own reward scheme? Thanks

Trading as normal atm as administrators yet to be appointed so I’d go quick!

I sympathise with the people who are going to lose their jobs, almost all of whom are presumably women.

But in a wider sense, is it really such a bad thing for the planet that a retailer of pointless throwaway plastic tat is going under?

People aren't buying less plastic tat though, they're just getting it from elsewhere.

The very same women that would have spent years stuffing same tat into party bags. Now their DD’s are older and “they haven’t been in there for YEARS”.

Motnight · 13/08/2025 15:59

Awful for all the staff. But I am surprised that it's lasted as long as it has to be honest.

True and if ordering through say Temu / other similar it’s not helping jobs and tax take here.

cheesycheesy · 13/08/2025 16:01

Yeah who cares about all the job losses. Let’s just be gleeful that one less shop is on the high street.

Icecreamandcoffee · 13/08/2025 16:01

I'm not surprised. As PP have said, it's very expensive for very low quality. My daughter conned my mum into buying her some hair bows from Claire's, nearly £10 for 4 hair bows. The clips broke on 2 of them after 3 wears. One bow became detached from the clip during the first wear. I bought almost identical bows off Temu on a lightning deal - 100 bows for £2 same quality. For her to wear them to school and loose them or break them at an alarming rate I am not playing Claire's prices.

Probably will only care when these workers have to claim UC though.

neverbeenskiing · 13/08/2025 16:04

I feel sorry for all the people who will lose their jobs but I'm not surprised. Their products are expensive and poorly made.

OtherS · 13/08/2025 16:06

Very unhappy about the death of the high street, but not at all sorry about the death of Claire's Accessories. Nasty plastic Chinese crap that's destroying the environment. You can get much better for similar prices from local makers that is made without slave labour, and doesn't need shipping halfway across the world.

HerecomesMargo · 13/08/2025 16:08

I feel very sorry for the people who will lose their jobs. My dd is 3 and I went in for the very first time a few weeks ago. She had a blast choosing hair accessories but I spent almost £30 on absolute tat. I think their stores don’t have a space anymore because of all the other options, still sad though that 2k jobs are at risk.

NoSoupForU · 13/08/2025 16:09

They sell overpriced tat so they're competing with the likes of temu online where people can buy their gawdy plastic tat for less than half the price of Claires.

Shame for anyone who loses their job though.

BubblingBelly · 13/08/2025 16:09

I feel sad when any High Street shop shuts down. I’m in my 50s now but I’ve always loved shopping in person. Just today I was reminiscing about the topshop on Oxford Circus. All the different floors and the basement floors with all their unusual one-off labels. I have many happy memories of shopping up and down Oxford Street from my university years.

Whilst my kids and I are too old for Claire‘s now, it was part of their lives many years ago and it makes me sad to lose another household name. It must be very stressful for the staff right now.

BubblingBelly · 13/08/2025 16:12

But surely it is much more fun for young kids to look around Claire‘s and choose various items, than looking at the screen and ordering online. It’s just not the same for children, surely. Being in a shop, looking at prices, talking to shop assistants, are useful social learning experiences too.

AlbusCornus · 13/08/2025 16:17

Maybe buying tat is going out of fashion.
People I know prefer experiences/nature and cafes, over shopping for nik naks.
Maybe it's a good thing.

Take them to a country park instead, let them run around, and then visit the gift shop and cafe, probably be cheaper and much better for them. I can think of a few independent shops near me selling good quality home made jewellery much cheaper.

Skybluepinky · 13/08/2025 16:22

It’s always been a tat shop and u can get the same thing but cheaper from Temu and Shein if you need more tat in your life.

Fenellasbum · 13/08/2025 16:27

It’s a shame that people will lose jobs, but my God, what a load of fucking shite is stocked by Claire’s. That said, my nieces love the place. But they have severely limited money, as do most kids their age so I suppose that’s not great for business. Mostly DNs go in and look at it all as though it’s a magical universe, beg for anything they see, touch loads of stock and come out with a small cheap item or nothing at all. And then grow out of it.

Yes I agree. My daughter likes spending her pocket money there and has some vouchers to use.
It's hard to know where to go to buy the 'tat' they sell without resorting to looking online, it's hard for children to have that experience of going into a shop and picking out things they like these days.
(And to the other poster who said better to go to a park etc, we do that too!)
