But we didn’t have that when we were little and have lived to tell the tale. It’s not really a hardship. Hardly ever ate out. Saturdays were a trip to the library or popping into town for errands. You saved up for things you really wanted. You didn’t waste money. Going into town to spend money you don’t have on tat you don’t need and wasting money on extortionate crappy chain restaurant food is where we’ve gone wrong.

We lived in a cardboard box and only had a stick to play with. Never did us any harm.

Kids actually don’t like being dragged round town in endless shops selling the same shite. Unnecessary consumerism isn’t that great for them or the planet.

I agree. It’s just nightmare all around, so I don’t bother.

Cardboard?
Luxury. We dreamed of cardboard.

Exactly! I don’t think I’m a bad parent for wanting my child to see the world and have different experiences. It’s not even about eating out, I happily take packed lunch and let them buy ice cream only as a treat out. I don’t want to spend my weekends on the high street running errands and I don’t think this makes me a bad person. I’ll happily take my child to the library, theatre and the cinema for an experience. I hate running errands myself and I like bulk buy.

I’m glad. Overpriced landfill.

Not sad about Dominoes either. Overpriced crap that adds to the obesity crisis. Doing without takeaways, over priced coffee and consumerism isn’t a hardship.

The human race is going to have to adapt. We have been wasteful and eating/ living beyond our means for far too long.

Ok

so what 2000+ jobs are you creating for these staff losing theirs?

virtue posting helps no one.

OSTMusTisNT · 13/08/2025 19:03

Won't miss it, cheap nasty crap that ends up broken within days and thrown in the bin.

I never got over the closing of Razzle Dazzle, my daughter will be feeling this same about Claire’s

There's a blast from the past. I used to LOVE Razzle Dazzle, I think I bought my first pair of leggings from there in around 1985.

LurkThenPost · 13/08/2025 18:53

They can hire those same staff and train them up to work online - virtual assistants, virtual personal dressers and advice. The world is going more digital but people will still be needed. Look at the state of banks, it’s all online so many closing. The answer isn’t for people to pay parking or be worried about getting fines. People can’t afford take aways, Domino’s are having trouble.

Not everyone wants everything to go digital.

paying for parking. The amount that's gone up needs adressing for sure, but many don't want to lose the Hugh streets so closing all retail & banks is not the answer.

No they don't. But many DO like being taken. ' Into town' to look around the shops that interest them & grab a bit of lunch. It's a social interaction that teaches them a lot.

A stick? You had a stick? Spoilt!!

So what do you want people to do? Spend money they don’t have on tat they don’t need in poorly stocked shops whilst paying extortionate parking / bus fairs to fill landfill that damages the planet.🤔

No, but it’s lower footfall in town centres that’s the problem. With every closure , the high street becomes a less appealing place to visit and the cycle continues. This is bigger than Claire’s.

My point was they've made the high street inaccessible by extortionate parking prices, worries about getting parking fines, closing the banks and then retail shops are struggling. Something needs to be done.

beautifuldaytosavelives · 13/08/2025 18:16

Of course it’s generally tat. Of course it’s over the odds. It’s marketed at tweens exercising some purchasing power. To all those who ‘don’t bother’ with the high street, please don’t come back bemoaning the lack of part time jobs for DC or the amount of time they spend online, or lack of social skills…the high street, and for youngsters, shopping together, is a community and a social experience and when there’s nothing but empty buildings, it will be too late.

Exactly!!

BondAway25 · 13/08/2025 22:05

Gal3tt3 · 13/08/2025 18:29

But it’s planet damaging extortionate tat they don’t need.

I don't think it's the kids buying a sparkly bag, pair of earrings or Christmas necklace in uk retail store destroying the planet.

children buying things they want/like is part of growing up,

we ALL (yes, including you) have things we don't 'NEED' but just want,

bellamorgan · 13/08/2025 22:13

Sad for the staff but you could see it coming once they starting having sections in other shops dedicated to them.

Failing stores often try and get a foot into other stores cheaply to try and bolster sales.

If toysrus couldn’t bring in enough children Claire’s had no chance long term. Probably only surviving by the idiots who still take children to get their ears done there.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 13/08/2025 22:34

The majority of the stuff they have ever sold is almost certainly now in landfill. Awful company wasting our finite resources selling tat to kids.

JenniferBooth · 13/08/2025 22:45

Im 52 and ive bought their large hair claw grips because they are slightly longer than ones ive seen elsewhere and i have very thick hair

BebbanburgIsMine · 13/08/2025 22:47

Fargo79 · 13/08/2025 17:54

Their business model and pricing was shite. I'm amazed they lasted as long as they did. The internet has been catastrophic for the high street, but Claire's dug its own grave IMO and was only a matter of time.

So many Christmas shopping trips I've been to Claire's looking for stocking fillers and every single time without fail I've walked out empty handed. I was never prepared to pay the overblown price for the thing I actually did want, and could never find 6 pieces of tat I wanted to buy which would have brought the price down to something realistic. As for the ear piercing, just don't get me started.

I had my second ear piercing done at Claire’s, had no trouble with my ears at all.

Both my DDs had their first and second piercings done there too. They haven’t had any trouble with their ears either, and it’s been 24 years for DD1, and 22 for DD2.

They’re 34 and 32 now.

radiator2 · 14/08/2025 00:14

So sad that so many people are going to be losing their jobs at an already difficult time. Lots of retail jobs like that are very competitive nowadays and hard to get so I doubt all of them will be able to find new jobs. Feel very sad about Claire’s closing, like a real end of an era. Was a huge part of my childhood and I’m sure many others. Think it speaks volumes about the loss of the high street. Really hope there’s a last minute solution and it can pull through.

realsavagelike · 14/08/2025 05:28

Say 'tat' ONE MORE TIME

How was that 'your point' when it wasn't what you said?

Majority of couples work full time. Online shopping is VERY convenient for bulk ordering and saves hassle taking kids out to run some errands. Plus, parking costs and then petrol. There has been a rise in parking fines too.
What sane parents want to spend their weekends running errands and grocery shopping when I can have it delivered on a weekday? Which means I can save my weekends taking kids out and spending quality time with them

OneNeatBlueOrca · 13/08/2025 15:24

Won't be sorry to see it go.
Sick of the pestering for their tat and their shoddy ear piercing.
Hopefully they'll find other uses for their pocket money now 💰

Yeah... questioning anyone's use of the word 'loss' in relation to their products.

Although of course I'm genuinely sorry for those losing jobs.

PollyBell · 14/08/2025 06:11

Now all the cheap stuff ie shein gets sold on line

We may wake up and realise quality over quantity one day

PeonyPatch · 14/08/2025 06:19

Sad for the high street 🙁

I used to go to Claire’s as a little girl.

I am sad for the death of the high street and the community it can bring.

Theonewhogotthecake · 14/08/2025 06:30

Although I’m sad about the jobs that are being lost, as a shop I hate it. Vastly overpriced tat (£10 + for a tiny, plastic ice cream lip balm). Won’t also miss the pestering.
