Good riddance. It's totally overpriced for the absolute tat it is selling. I was upset about a few high street closures but Claire's? nah.

kc431 · 13/08/2025 17:28

The thing is, so many jobs are just selling people tat they don’t need - marketing, advertising, sales assistants. If we genuinely want to cut down waste and landfill on the planet, a lot of them will have to go. There needs to be some other model of economy apart from “endless growth”.

I would direct your anger at the posters on here taking pleasure at the loss of women's jobs.

I’m not angry at you or anyone else.

Very unhappy about the death of the high street, but not at all sorry about the death of Claire's Accessories. Nasty plastic Chinese crap that's destroying the environment. You can get much better for similar prices from local makers that is made without slave labour, and doesn't need shipping halfway across the world.

But hardly anybody will. People are far more likely to buy from Temu & Shein, same old crap but much cheaper so they can buy even more of it. It's a lovely idea that a high street shop closing would lead to us all thinking about using environmentally friendly products but it's not a realistic one.
Agree with pps that the reality is over 2000 people (& a very high percentage young women) will lose their jobs which is nothing to be glad about.

At this rate, end of the year! Domino's reported they're also having problems. More people are stealing and people don't have enough money to spend on luxuries.

The pizza chain?

CatrinVennastin · 13/08/2025 17:32

I used to work for Claire’s in a head office role and for a business in the retail sector they are actually a really good flexible employer.

most of the staff are female and paid the minimum wage so to be celebrating the demise of the stores is really harsh.

Yes the products are tat but people are just buying even more tatty tat from Shein and Temu so the workers making the products get paid even less.

No one on MN cares about the many women who will lose their jobs. More important that their precious kids stop asking for 'tat'

The only staff I’ve seen in Claire’s recently are bored looking late- teenage girls snapping gum and shrugging insouciantly at any questions tentatively thrown their way.

Could this be because people are eating healthier? We never buy takeaways but get a healthy lunch meal prep delivery (Simmer Eats), as well as Oddbox and online butchers. All I get advertised on Instagram is various healthy meal prep companies. Maybe these are the new takeaways…

That may be so but the issue is the growth is likely just going to China via Temu etc

I don't think so, I say this with zero judgment just overall facts of what has happened.

There has been a rise of mounjaro use and weightloss products - this could have contributed to buying less take aways. People are spending money on this. Bills and mortgages are going up, people can't afford expensive take aways - Domino's is on the expensive side. Tarrifs in USA have increased, these companies are mainly American based so this could have contributed? I do love a good Friday take away, but wouldn't buy Domino's due to cost unless a special treat.

Again, Domino’s, another massively overpriced place. A bit of bread with some tomato sauce and cheese, let’s charge a ridiculous price then give a ‘half price’ voucher as an incentive. 🙄

I agree with you. I wasn't surprised tbh.

JackGrealishsBobbySocks · 13/08/2025 17:45

My daughter was interested in a tiny fluffy backpack in there last year. Then she saw the price tag of over 40 quid and even SHE started laughing

OxfordInkling · 13/08/2025 17:49

LurkThenPost · 13/08/2025 17:31

I’m fairly unsurprised. They kept increasing prices until a large was about £18 for delivery.🚚 couldn’t stomach that so stopped bothering - the local fish and chip shop was way better value.

They had to bring the prices down more recently - £14 for a large now - but I can buy a fancy Waitrose pizza for £7 (or for £2:30 if I just wait for the reduced section ones) without any bother and it’s piping hot when I get it out the oven…

JackJarvisEsq · 13/08/2025 17:50

I never got over the closing of Razzle Dazzle, my daughter will be feeling this same about Claire’s

Gal3tt3 · 13/08/2025 17:52

I’m glad. Overpriced landfill.

Not sad about Dominoes either. Overpriced crap that adds to the obesity crisis. Doing without takeaways, over priced coffee and consumerism isn’t a hardship.

The human race is going to have to adapt. We have been wasteful and eating/ living beyond our means for far too long.

Fargo79 · 13/08/2025 17:54

Their business model and pricing was shite. I'm amazed they lasted as long as they did. The internet has been catastrophic for the high street, but Claire's dug its own grave IMO and was only a matter of time.

So many Christmas shopping trips I've been to Claire's looking for stocking fillers and every single time without fail I've walked out empty handed. I was never prepared to pay the overblown price for the thing I actually did want, and could never find 6 pieces of tat I wanted to buy which would have brought the price down to something realistic. As for the ear piercing, just don't get me started.

Iocainepowder · 13/08/2025 17:55

One positive will be fewer places that parents can get their babies’ ears pierced by a teenager with a gun.

I can't see anything online about Dominos closing down. A dip in sales is all that's been reported.

No sad loss for me. I have a high tolerance for spangly nonsense but it really was absolute tut. Feel sympathy for anyone losing their job though.

pinkpanther84 · 13/08/2025 17:57

It’s just way too expensive for its market. My 11 year old would love to shop there but it’s so overpriced she ends up spending her money in b&m, home bargains and primark

It's entirely due to my Mounjaro, sorry about that Domino's 😅

Though I will always love, and can still manage, a small vegetarian supreme, double mushrooms, jalapeños instead of green peppers. Bloody lush. Practically health food in pizza terms. There are vegetables!

I don't mean to be snarky but can you really consider a company a good employer when it pays most people minimum wage? And in my experience with retail jobs, flexibility often ends up meaning you get fewer shifts than you need and end up having to try and find a second job to make ends meet.
