Was IBU for walking out of shop at checkout?

I'm not naming the shop, but this morning, I went into a big high street retailer to collect a click and collect order and whilst I was there, I had a look around and picked up a few more things.

Went to till, total came to over £150, all fine, sales assistant asked if they could have my email address for the receipt. I said, no thanks, a paper receipt is fine thanks, she said, sorry we don't do paper receipts, we need to have your email address to provide that. I looked at her and said I had never come across any other retailer doing that, but she stood her ground and said in an assertive tone, I need your email address. Again I refused and said, if that's the case, I'll just leave it and walked away. Last time I gave a retailer my email in store, I was bombarded with daily emails, despite unsubscribing via the link at every email received.

WIBU to have walked away as I didn't want to hand over my personal data? Driving home, I did think about creating a separate email account for this reason, but then again, why should I? surely my preferences should be respected.

Vote with your feet.

B1anche · 12/08/2025 12:28

Was it New Look? Or Dunelm? They are both bad for insisting on digital receipts. I always stand my ground.

GabriellaMontez · 12/08/2025 12:28

I had similar recently. I wanted to pay cash and have a paper receipt(for a gift).

They reluctantly agreed -- eventually.

Ridiculous.

CopperWhite · 12/08/2025 12:29

YANBU but there’s no reason you shouldn’t name the store to warn other people.

Elephantonabroom · 12/08/2025 12:30

I have done similar if I wanted the receipt. good on you.

Boredlass · 12/08/2025 12:30

Fine to do that but don’t expect to be able to return anything. I’ve never noticed more spam after doing this

Coffeeishot · 12/08/2025 12:30

It seems unlikely they don't do physical receipts they are probably trying to push the email thing by higher up the chain, I don't mind it but its fair to not wanting to be bombarded with marketing rubbish.

Dunelm always give me a paper receipt without argument when I ask.

Clockforce · 12/08/2025 12:30

I do have a seperate email I use for online shppping and anything like this.

You're not unreasonable to walk away if you think they'll miss you more than you'll miss them. What will you do about the stuff you wanted/needed now?

This!

I had bought something small recently, offered a receipt and said yes, as I had a few more places to go so I like to have proof of purchase. Whole email malarky. I took the item, without a receipt but was not happy and will be slow to go back there. (It was Dunelm).

LastKnownSurvivor · 12/08/2025 12:31

My DH gave his email address to a shop - large, reputable brand - and has been spammed relentlessly, despite trying to 'unsubscribe'. You did the right thing. I always ask politely for a paper receipt and haven't been refused yet, but I'm middle-aged 😄

AgentJohnson · 12/08/2025 12:32

But you went there to collect a click and collect order, so presumably they already had your email address. I get your annoyance but in this instance, the walking out was performative.

You're very fortunate! My local branch usually cave eventually but not before a fight!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 12/08/2025 12:32

What store was it, op?

Yanbu but i have made a separate email address for such reasons

I actually prefer an email receipt now, as I lose the paper ones

Still, people should still have the option

Coffeeishot · 12/08/2025 12:34

I do have a spam email account for receipts, which is helpful everything just goes there.

I’ll name as people making a valid point. Yes it was Dunelm.

New look bitched and moaned when I refused to give them my email recently. The absolute huffing and puffing was ridiculous. I then got told sternly “but you won’t be able to make a refund without it” - it was a 2.50 key ring. I’m not giving my data for the sake of plastic tat!

My husband placed the order so it was his email address. He sent me the screenshot of the order confirmation to collect. He’s also that person with over 2500+ unread email notifications on his phone which bugs the life out of me lol.

I have a google account which is for anything like that. My personal account is totally different.

So give them his email?

VeryStressedMum · 12/08/2025 12:42

You already gave your email address for the click and collect when you placed the order online so it's not like it's particularly secret information.
I don't like giving email address at the till as I can't be bothered to spell it out if they don't understand. For higher value items or electrical if I buy it from an actual shop then I'd choose email as I'm likely to lose the paper recipt.

I had the same in New Look, sale item under £10 and I never shop in there so didn’t want to be on their mailing list. The assistant had already taken my money (cash) and then asked for the email. I said ‘paper receipt please’ and she refused and said that I must provide an email and not in a very polite way. We went back and forward for a couple of minutes and then I asked for a refund instead. Funnily enough at that point a paper receipt popped out of the printer. But I won’t be back.

IMissSparkling · 12/08/2025 12:43

If pushed, I just tell them breezily that I don't have an email address. 🤥 I do sometimes get the side eye but I always get a paper receipt!
