I'm not naming the shop, but this morning, I went into a big high street retailer to collect a click and collect order and whilst I was there, I had a look around and picked up a few more things.

Went to till, total came to over £150, all fine, sales assistant asked if they could have my email address for the receipt. I said, no thanks, a paper receipt is fine thanks, she said, sorry we don't do paper receipts, we need to have your email address to provide that. I looked at her and said I had never come across any other retailer doing that, but she stood her ground and said in an assertive tone, I need your email address. Again I refused and said, if that's the case, I'll just leave it and walked away. Last time I gave a retailer my email in store, I was bombarded with daily emails, despite unsubscribing via the link at every email received.

WIBU to have walked away as I didn't want to hand over my personal data? Driving home, I did think about creating a separate email account for this reason, but then again, why should I? surely my preferences should be respected.

I thought shops couldn't be completely paperless because you can't ask under 16s for their email address? How would it work for gift receipts if they don't have the till roll for the receipt? I call bullshit on their "can't do paper receipts"

New Look are the worst for this, I had one woman insist relentlessly that they just needed my email for the receipt. Lo and behold, that might I get a marketing email. Luckily every single time I've since bought something from them I've just asked for a paper receipt and they have been fine with it.

If pushed, I just tell them breezily that I don't have an email address. 🤥 I do sometimes get the side eye but I always get a paper receipt!

Same! Or I say I can't remember it because it's a new one!

My husband placed the order so it was his email address. He sent me the screenshot of the order confirmation to collect. He’s also that person with over 2500+ unread email notifications on his phone which bugs the life out of me lol.

Then give your DH's email. I don't think that you can use C&C then complain about a email receipt tbh. You've cut your nose off to spite your face.

i won't do it for the simple reason that my email address is firstname.lastname at emailprovider.com and it takes an age to spell it out, and for them to hunt and peck at the keyboard until they have it entered and then... it's incorrect and i never get the receipt.

I am not going to the trouble of setting up a separate account just for this. But also, Digital Exclusion is A Thing and when i've been out with my mum and this has come up for her, she just says "no, i don't do email". Up until now she, and i, has always been given a paper receipt. But i would also leave if i was being badgered like this. Then i'd be all over SM and mailing their CEO about it.

Yes exactly. Both my first name and surname are unusual and have to spelled out. I just can't be bothered when, in an instant, a paper receipt can be produced.

I hate giving out my email. How did you manage to do a click and collect without providing it?

Dunelm don't have to take an email address to give you a paper receipt, ours have no issue giving them.
I was told that staff have targets for how many email addresses they get though, which would explain it

They can easily give a paper receipt without an email address, but the issue is that they are (at least at certain shops) seemingly very reluctant to give a paper receipt and are being pressured to give email receipts, for which of course they do need an email address.

B1anche · 12/08/2025 12:28

Was it New Look? Or Dunelm? They are both bad for insisting on digital receipts. I always stand my ground.

We get told to ask every customer, there’s a daily chart every day with our names of who’s doing good and bad, if anyone is below their percentage they get spoken too.

Just say “ sorry I don’t have an email address “

On a completely different subject, my username on a couple of other sites is FlibbertyGibbitt and each time I see your name it confuses the hell out of me 🤣

I recently bought a windscreen wiper blade from Halfords. Was asked for email first and then my car registration which I thought was strange. I queried it and was told they "needed" it to sell me the blade which sounded like a load of nonsense to me. I checked if my car reg would flag up something on their system showing that it was the correct one for my car - as I was trying to understand why they would need it. The person looked at me like |I was crazy and said no with a sigh. Within a few minutes an email came through with a customer satisfaction questionnaire which I promptly filled in complaining about having to give all this ridiculous info.

Notfeelinguptoit · 12/08/2025 14:03

Quite a few shops do this now, I’ve been asked a few times but usually I say I don’t need a receipt and they don’t push.
HMV did it a few weeks ago but I said I’m fine and don’t need a receipt.

They were unreasonable for demanding you give your email when you’d said you didn’t want one.
You were definitely not unreasonable.

B1anche · 12/08/2025 12:32

You're very fortunate! My local branch usually cave eventually but not before a fight!

Our local store also ask if I'd prefer paper or email...
As of yet never been refused a paper receipt.

And TBH if I was refused one after payment I'd stand there and tell them I'd want to return all goods just purchased, certainly wouldn't walk out without a receipt.

CouldItBeTragic · 12/08/2025 14:07

Am I right that by the time you get to the point where they are demanding an email, that you have already paid?
Id like to tell them to shove it and not shop there after all, but would it be the case that I have paid for the item and own it, and the debate is merely about proving I bought it from that shop?

BridgetofKildare · 12/08/2025 14:10

I just have a junk email address - something along the lines of unwantedadverts123 (at) yahoo.com.

Blanknotebook · 12/08/2025 14:12

I have stood at checkouts with a straight face and told them I don’t have an email address because I don’t use the Internet. All lies of course, but they don’t need to know my business. Not everyone has an email address.

Ihateboris · 12/08/2025 14:13

Good on you. This really pisses me off as I don't want to be inundated with marketing emails!

Americano75 · 12/08/2025 14:14

Based on this thread I'm going to create an email just for receipts and call it something like [email protected]

SerendipityJane · 12/08/2025 14:14

So they already have an email address ?

AdayinDecember · 12/08/2025 14:15

Not only do shops insist on taking your email address, they often don't make any effort to make sure they have written it down properly. I am old enough to have [email protected] as my address and I get a lot of email receipts for people who are clearly something like myname21.surname or myname middle initial.surname but the shop assistant has failed to notate it properly. So not only do I get my spam but theirs as well.

I really agree with this. my mum and dad are 87 and 82 and don’t have email or a smartphone yet are continually told by doctors, council and retailers - just go online and fill out a form…yes i could do it for them but they don’t want me to - they want to manage their own affairs. No doubt someone will post about how their 99 year old relative uses internet banking, email and online dating which is great for them, but doesn’t take away from the fact that alternatives should be provided.

I bought goods in Dunelm about 2 hours ago and when asked for my email address I just asked a a receipt. Printed out no fuss.

purplecorkheart · 12/08/2025 14:18

Doesn't seem to be such an issue in Ireland or certainly in my experience. There are a few stores that ask for your email but also offer a paper version without prompting.

ohtowinthelottery · 12/08/2025 14:18

I give my email address to stores for the purpose of receipts only. If they say it's just for the receipt then they can't use it to bombard you with crap as you haven't consented to that. So make sure you tell them that.
Our local Dunelm store started telling us last year that they were phasing out paper receipts this year but I've had paper receipts from them recently.

MrsHiggins1 · 12/08/2025 14:18

I think you over reacted but if you feel so strongly about it, it’s still your choice. I would have just given them an email address. I always get spam emails regardless of what I don’t sign up to, even after changing email address,

HaddlerScoop · 12/08/2025 14:22

You need a separate email for all shopping. When something comes through, set up a folder for each shop. These are emails that I do not have alerts on my phone. The only time I know I have emails from them is when I look in that specific email. Also it means finding any receipt for that shop is easier.

I have several email accounts, ones I can just kill off if needed.
