I'm not naming the shop, but this morning, I went into a big high street retailer to collect a click and collect order and whilst I was there, I had a look around and picked up a few more things.

Went to till, total came to over £150, all fine, sales assistant asked if they could have my email address for the receipt. I said, no thanks, a paper receipt is fine thanks, she said, sorry we don't do paper receipts, we need to have your email address to provide that. I looked at her and said I had never come across any other retailer doing that, but she stood her ground and said in an assertive tone, I need your email address. Again I refused and said, if that's the case, I'll just leave it and walked away. Last time I gave a retailer my email in store, I was bombarded with daily emails, despite unsubscribing via the link at every email received.

WIBU to have walked away as I didn't want to hand over my personal data? Driving home, I did think about creating a separate email account for this reason, but then again, why should I? surely my preferences should be respected.

They don’t usually ask if you want your reciept until after you’ve paid, so you paid and then walked off and left your stuff?

Nevereatcardboard · 12/08/2025 14:25

I say that I don’t do email. Nobody ever questions it because I’m older and have white hair. There are some advantages to looking old!

Laiste · 12/08/2025 14:26

Wrt poster who works there and says they get 'talked to' if they don't harvest enough emails per week - let them talk! It's a marketing ploy and the the person who does the 'talking to' will get a 'talk' from their boss. Who will get a 'talk' from theirs and so on.

Its a load of bollocks. Just smile, nod, ask each customer politely as you've been asked to do and if it's a no give the paper receipt with a smile too.

WorkingHorse · 12/08/2025 14:27

I always ask for a paper receipt in Dunelm and won’t give my email address. I can’t be arsed spending the extra 30 seconds that takes plus they have no need for that in my view.

ManchesterLu · 12/08/2025 14:28

All you need to do is say "I don't give out my email address, sorry". End of discussion, repeat as required. They do NOT have the right to your private information just because you want to buy something from them. There is no legal requirement for you to give it to them, nor do you need to walk out.

PigFan · 12/08/2025 14:28

I always ask if I can have a paper receipt as well as giving my email and they’re always happy to do that. I do give my real email as I like to have a digital receipt in case I lose the paper one but you could always just give a fake email address and just take the paper one.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/08/2025 14:29

I created an email address called, something like, [email protected] (just realised that this might be someones actual address!)

Which is easy to remember, and easy for shop assistants to spell, and then I can delete everything in it, other than the receipt I want.

Talkingfrog · 12/08/2025 13:21

You would if faulty.

It costs £3 each way for me to get to my nearest New Look, I wouldn't be returning a £2.50 key ring.

SprayWhiteDung · 12/08/2025 14:34

How stupid an excuse to tell people that they won't be able to return goods if they lose their paper receipt.

What if you lose the item that you want/need to return - maybe they should insist on somehow emailing your purchases to you as well, if you can't be trusted to look after anything!!

givemushypeasachance · 12/08/2025 14:36

If retailers are spamming you with communications despite attempts to unsubscribe, complain to the ICO about them. That's a misuse of your personal data. https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/

My pet hate is when you sign up for something and they make you "opt out" of communication instead of actively having to opt in.

Make a complaint

Not only do shops insist on taking your email address, they often don't make any effort to make sure they have written it down properly. I am old enough to have [email protected] as my address and I get a lot of email receipts for people who are clearly something like myname21.surname or myname middle initial.surname but the shop assistant has failed to notate it properly. So not only do I get my spam but theirs as well.

GDPR requires that personal data be captured accurately and that a company can demonstrate they are doing this.

It's not a big deal, but thought I'd flag it ....

SerendipityJane · 12/08/2025 14:38

How stupid an excuse to tell people that they won't be able to return goods if they lose their paper receipt.

It's also factually incorrect. It's proof of purchase that a court needs. A receipt is one way, but not the only way.

Again, not a big deal, but worth noting.

SprayWhiteDung · 12/08/2025 14:38

It's the same as online advertising that wants to use hundreds of tracking cookies by default - even for shops that you might/will be making a purchase from.

Companies are no longer grateful that you chose them and for your business; they see it as their basic entitlement to your data in order for them (and their huge numbers if 'trusted partners') to quite literally make merchandise of you.

Always remember, whenever somebody tells you faux-reassuringly that 'your privacy is important to us', what they actually mean is in the exact same way that your handbag is important to a mugger.

BusWankers · 12/08/2025 14:38

It's odd you don't like giving "personal information" yet the store already knows your husband's information, probably your address, what bank you use, probably your husband's date of birth/age, that has your image on CCTV... But giving an email address is too much?

SerendipityJane · 12/08/2025 14:39

TroysMammy · 12/08/2025 14:17

I bought goods in Dunelm about 2 hours ago and when asked for my email address I just asked a a receipt. Printed out no fuss.

The problem is printers - and their maintenance - are not free. And the less they get used, the more the cost per print goes up.

Moveoverdarlin · 12/08/2025 14:43

This just wouldn’t bother me. It’s Dunelm, not some dodge retailer like Temu. If they then bombard you with emails, just unsubscribe. Takes a second.

Or just give them your husband’s email address - presumably they’d email him anyway and say ‘thanks for picking up your order Mr Smith - here’s your receipt in case you need to return.

Now you’re without £150 worth of stuff that you actually wanted. But Yay!! At least they don’t have your email.

Owl55 · 12/08/2025 14:45

New Look never insist on an email receipt in my local store, I always request a paper receipt .

Exactly. You’re an existing customer! What’s the problem? It’s not like receiving spam from viagra dealers or dodgy dating sites based in Timbuktu.

Ironically sharing personal details ...

Aspanielstolemysanity · 12/08/2025 14:52

Well at least it's saved you spending £150 on stuff you clearly didn't need. So better for the planet and your wallet.
We spent last week at the coast and seeing all the huge container ships bringing crap from around the world for people to mindlessly buy has strengthened my view that reducing consumption is the best thing we can all do for the planet

B1anche · 12/08/2025 12:28

Was it New Look? Or Dunelm? They are both bad for insisting on digital receipts. I always stand my ground.

Last time I was in the long queue at Dunelm (a whole other rant) I could see they were asking everyone for email addresses. I hadn't got much and was paying cash - and wasn't asked for mine, just automatically handed a paper receipt. I don't know know if it was just luck or because it was a cash payment but cash will be my preference next time!!

Was accused of stealing from WH Smith Apparently i have been seen in there shoving magazines up my top and according to the woman who accused me they have CCTV footage of this. And the manager told her i was banned. First id heard of it. So i asked to see this "footage" and not surprisingly was told i have to apply to see it but as i was not told the date and time this was supposed to have happened how am i supposed to apply for this non existant footage. Well i dont like being accused of things i havent done so WILL be taking this further. Oh and quite how im supposed to be able to fit a magazine up my top when my boobs are a HH cup size is quite laughable!!!!! And since i was accused publicly in front of other customers that makes it slander! This was at the end of last month. A week later she compounded the issue by posting on facebook a load of lies about me saying i go in there and shout at staff, there is loads of cctv footage of me, (which there isnt as i never did any of this stuff) and that as a mystery shopper she has caught me loads of times And the way i am with staff and the general public is disgusting. NONE of this is true so i reported this to the police under the Malicious Communications Act. They gave me a crime number, I have also e mailed WH Smith who kept passing the buck Finally the CEOs office e mailed me back saying they would investigate but im not allowed to know the outcome!!! Yes she can humiliate me in public by accusing me of shoplifting in public then posting lies about me on social media but SSSH Jennifer Put up with it!

NOTE.........it is an offence under the Malicious Communications Act to post on social media false information or info you know is false. And she KNOWS its false because a. none of this happened b. the cctv of this DOES NOT EXIST because none of it happened, and she has peppered replies to her slanderous post with laughing emojis She finds it entertaining and funny.

So NOW i have a paper reciept for EVERYTHING i buy no matter how small

Too fucking bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SerendipityJane · 12/08/2025 15:01

NOTE.........it is an offence under the Malicious Communications Act to post on social media false information or info you know is false.

But, once again, no big deal.

columnatedruinsdomino · 12/08/2025 15:04

Yes, Dunelm at the weekend were reluctant. They asked for an email address and I said can I have a paper receipt please, we stared at each other, I smiled and they tutted and hit the receipt key pretty hard. I smiled again and said thank you. Felt like I'd been a nuisance but tough.

CBM40 · 12/08/2025 15:04

Everywhere will eventually be doing this. Please don't give off to shop assistants about it. They don't make the rules. Just doing as they are told
